I am a general reader and a general lover of the visual arts, who often finds contemporary conceptual art difficult to keep up with. I turn to books like Lives of the Artists in an attempt to keep current and for interesting conversation. Lives of the Artists, with its emphasis on the artists' lives rather than art genres and trends makes it more interesting conversation than edification, but that's okay.Tomkins, art critic for The New Yorker, had years of articles from which to choose, and he chose biography as his organizing theme, a la Giorgio Vasari, of the movers and shakers in the contemporary international art world. His selection skews to the most controversial, provocative and/or innovative: Jasper Johns, Maurizio Cattelan, Cindy Sherman, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, James Turrell, Julian Schnabel, John Currin, Richard Serra and Matthew Barney. Tomkins does a good job of introducing the artist in a current scene, before cutting to the back story to scribe the arc of career, inspiration and critical reaction. This mostly works, though the first profile in the collection, of Damien Hirst, had the ring of a VH1 "Behind the Music" rock star story. Tomkins provides updates on each career, current as of 2008 when this book was prepared. Alas, there are no illustrations, no images of the subjects' work or of them.One thing I could not help but notice about the collection: though the author notes in his preface that there are thousands of working artists living and producing in New York City alone, and he had years of his own profiles to select from, he chose a line-up that is starkly white, and with the exception of Cindy Sherman, male. Women mostly appear as bit players in these stories, as girlfriends, wives, muses, studio assistants and, in a couple of instances, "porno" subjects. Is this representative of the world of art right now? It feels more like the night before the women's and civil rights movements injected a more inclusive diversity into our cultural reflection.

Capsule reviews of the lives and works ten important artists. No pics, which a critic quoted on the back cover claims to be an advantage. Yeah, yeah -- none of those distracting images! With the internet that's not a big disadvantage, but it's certainly more distracting to get up and google than to turn the page.Written in a breezy, well-informed style which I generally like -- I've read a number of Tomkins' books -- but several non sequiturs slipped by his editor. I occasionally got the feeling that the text had been dictated, with minimal revisions. But lots of good facts and impressions, from an author who has spent, in some cases, decades getting to know his subjects.

I love this writer. He has a bit of everything, intelligent, but not pretentious. Insightful and just enough juice. He has a sense of the times and ART. I LOVED Living Well is the Best Revenge, How can you not love that Title. I use it all the time to get through difficult times.This is a tremendous read, RICH and extremely resourceful. The subjects are all intelligent, successful human beings, a great study and the work is brilliantly portrayed, VIVID. Tomkins is an extremely visual writer. Brilliant.This is also an important piece of work for the Arts. Its a testament to the times of the artwork and the lives of the artists. Great Work.

I love this book. A great look at wildly different artists who have made their mark in Western culture and, thanks to Calvin Tomkins, in me. Interesting, intimate, personal but never fawning or self-conscious.One really big complaint though...not the writing but eBook technology: why is "performance" always spelled "per for mance?" Many other words were consistently mangled. Several sections were marred by this kind sloppy formatting that I seriously doubt was seen in the "analog" version. I think I deserve my money back. I'm sure if I submitted a manuscript with these kind of errors to Amazon, I'd be laughed out of a contract. Fix it!

Great profiles of contemporary artists by the New York writer Calvin Tompkins. By combining biography, personal interviews and insights into the craft of each artist, Tompkins leaves the reader feeling as if she had been there as well. Like their work or not, Tompkins helps you to understand it.

Great book！ I do like the writing and conversation with different artist. It is worth to read it. I will read again when have more time.

Tompkins gets to know the artists, he visits their homes and studios, he parties with them and meets their significant others. He is not judgemental. He doesnt offer his opinions and for the duration of his essays I felt as if I had a window into the thought process and lives of the artists. This book is well worth reading if one is interested in art, especially contemporary art, and want to know about the artists who create it. It is readable, well written and fun.

Something of a back stage view of many of the hero's of this days art and no doubt the sight to today given to future generations. Excellent.

If this were me, the story would have ended at the interview. I would have gotten up and walked out, job be damned. Jasmine should have known then something underhanded was going on. My personal business is just that, my personal business. At least Jasmine had the sense to make Chase grovel behind her. If he wanted her he'd have to earn her. Chase never had to court or chase a woman before and her was intrigued by Jasmine. She introduced him to new experiences in his life. She defied all of his preferences and rules and that really captivated him. All it took was one taste of Jasmine and his nose was wide open in love with her and she was falling for him against her better judgement. They were hooked on each other but neither one was the sharing kind. And Jasmine definitely was not going to share Chase or be a part of a harem. She tried her best to stay away but Chase found a way to hook her back in.Who I really felt sorry for was Vivian and Troy. This is why there should never be secrets in a family. I did not feel sorry for Chase's harem, they made their choice and Dawn is kind of OCD crazy controlling. I don't understand why she is Chase's fiancee. There seems to be no love at all between them.Kenya wrote a very original and Imaginative story full of mystery. It kept my attention from beginning to end. The end left me hanging with the cliffhanger. I hate cliffhangers!!!!

Normally any book involving polyamory will send me running in the opposite direction. I'm not even sure why I purchased this one since it's mentioned in the summary. (My one click finger is getting out of control). I was mostly pleasantly surprised by this book, however. The author managed to use the polyamory as a source of conflict without making it central to the relationship between Jasmine and Chase so I was able to get over it.Let me say this, I'm Black and I read a lot of erotic romance. If you look at my profile page, you will find that I've only ever reviewed one other book from this genre involving an interracial couple. That is not by accident. Unfortunately, I've found it difficult to get past the sample pages of many of the interracial erotic romance books because they were poorly written, more vulgar than sexy or erotic and cliche. I don't know whether there is an explanation for that but it's been my experience. Numerically, there may be a greater number of horrible novels written about non-interracial couples but the proportion of the horrible ones in the interracial genre seems to be much greater. I'm saying all this to say that if you are going to grade a book on a curve, this one really deserves 6 stars considering the books that are similarly thematic.Jasmine did some things which I found to be stupid and annoying but there are like three heroines that don't do that stuff so I didn't let it effect my rating. For example, the interview process that Jasmine endured was ridiculous and I know of no intelligent women who would have allowed themselves to be subjected to anything so outrageous (BEFORE they even knew what the salary was. Now maybe if you told us about the salary before asking about our sexual history we would be in business but not before, c'mon). Overall, I liked Jasmine. She made choices I wouldn't have made but I'm not a character in an erotic romance novel (sadly). Jasmine had intelligence, fire and a general unwillingness to play by the rules. So basically, my kind of girl.I have more ambivalence about Chase's character. As a general rule I have stopped reading books that don't include dual perspectives for the male and female lead characters. I just find that I enjoy the experience much more when I know what both main characters are thinking. I'm just not sure about Chase. On the one hand he is the typical aggressive, controlling possessive alpha billionaire that i love. On the the other hand, he seems to be completely run by women. That's not something I like in my male H's. The whole thing where a woman is dictating your schedule and your relationship jusssst doesn't do anything for me so I can't say that I loved that. Chase was more of a 3 star rating for me.Other stuff: I liked how the plot progressed and kept you interested. I liked the sub-conflicts with Gabe, Jasmine's family, Troy and Vivian. I liked the hint of mystery and intrigue. Although I generally resent serials, I don't feel like I was short changed by this book. I feel like I got a complete story despite the 'who done it' sort of ending.What I didn't love were the sex scenes. Anytime an author refers to a "throbbing bud' my eyes roll so deep in my head I have a difficult time reengaging them on the book. The descriptions were ok but I didn't find them all that sexy and quantitatively there were not very many scenes for this particular genre. I also didn't love Chase's lack of familiarity with food. Most people with money have enough experience with fine dining to know what foie gras is. Not only did Chase not know what it was, he had never tasted it. But Jasmine from "the hood" both knew of the delicacy and already loved it. I know this is nit picky, but it just seemed really unrealistic that Chase had such a limited pallet. I also just didn't like the presence of Chase's other women. I know I said that at the beginning but I'm saying it again. I just don't like that ish.I plan to purchase the next book in this series and to see what else Kenya has going on.IF YOU KNOW OF ANY GOOD BOOKS FROM THIS GENRE, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO LEAVE SUGGESTIONS IN THE COMMENTS.

Chase is a stalkerific hero who surprised me throughout this book when his machinations reveal themselves.3. I found it very realistic that a beautiful, young billionaire would think nothing of setting up polyamorous playground. It also made sense that his pimp hand would be strong enough to expect nothing less than all to magically fall in line.4. I loved that the heroine asked all the believable questions of anyone introduced to this concept for the first time. Their connection came across authentic enough that the reader could understand her choices too.5. The supporting cast all added to the story, and didn't feel like sequel bait, or cartoony.6. Black hair realness was in effect. My favorite part is where the heroine's reactions at the requested hair makeover.7. This is an interracial romance that acknowledges differences but doesn't beat you over the head with it.7. I’m a fan of the movie Boomerang, and this had some of the same pacing and subject matter. The heroine is kind of a mashup of both the Halle Berry, and Robin Givens characters. You get the same satisfaction of watching the ultimate player's game meet its ultimate test.The Bad:1. Chase is the stalker billionaire hero trope on steroids, which sometimes came off creepy.2. Jasmine was often too quick to pick up her toys, and go home over the slightest push-back. Even after promising to talk before making rash decisions, it would happen again.Final ThoughtsThis was a fast paced soapy erotic read. It might be my first time reading this writer, but definitely not my last.

This book is expensive, but there are other options, one I wish I knew about. Checkout the publishers website cengage brain. Yes you can download the tools from the Palisade website. It's still a pain in the butt.We both know if you are reading this you are in a course looking for the best deal, keep looking.After getting it, I think digital is the wrong way to go with it. If you are going to use it a a reference, hardcover. If you want to just pass the course, rent it.All in all the steps remind me a great deal of process improvement, same logical processes.Update, as the class progresses, I am considering purchasing the hard cover edition too. The kindle is just not cutting it.

Update on the review 5/23/2012After two cycles with Cengage support, we finally got excellent support from Jeanette. She provided explicit instructions that allowed me to download an updated version of the software (@RISK 5.7) that worked in my environment (Win7, Excel 2010). We did have to do one final additional step (move the license file to "Palisade / System" directory) that was not in her instructions. We provided her feedback to add this step and thanked her for her support. We are having issues with teh SQL Server add-on optional feature, but this is a Microsoft issue and definitely not Cengage. Updating the review rating to 4 stars--------------------------------------Original reviewOrdered new ISBN-13: 978-0-495-01508-6 that arrived new with the companion student software in separate CD case that is labeled ISBN-13: 978-0-534-40919-7 for my husband's class. Book and CD appeared to be new. He tried installing the software. No access code is readily obvious in either the book or the companion CD. Palisade points to Cengage. Cengage has replied to a request for support telling me to "look in the book for the access code". Provided them the ISBN of the book and CD and asked explicitly where the "access code" can be found. Waiting for an answer. It is unclear to us whether the book is really not new and the access card has been removed or whether the support from the Cengage is not helpful.---------------------I would recommend buying this book and hopefully Cengage will provide the excellent feedback that I got from Jeanette on other's first contact with the support desk.

This is a fairly standard decision analysis textbook. My biggest frustration is that it is written in a very non-technical manner, as if for students that are afraid of math. It would be a great book for teaching DA in a business curriculum. It's less desirable for an engineering department, where I teach.

It's an OK book. A bit too wordy BUT examples are clear enough that you can understand the material and they walk you through how to use the software step by step. Definitely a good book to have as reference for decision making.

Book came as advertised. No issues. I dropped the class and returned it. The return process was very simple and quick.

I'm really happy with this book. The Amazon writeup said that it had a lot of practical examples and they were right. But it also had a terrific teaching style and a good strategy for organizing thinking to make the most of info that one has. I have already had two opportunities to put the strategy to the test and was astounded how well it worked. This is a definite keeper for me and I highly recommend it.

This book is a great complement to a class, but more importantly this book really could stand alone without an instructor guiding you along. The examples and step break-down allow students to practice the methology without having to rely on any other resources.Many books require the use of other resources or a course. This did not.

This book was great for learning how to properly analyze decisions and get a decent background in Engineering Economics.The software that came with the book did not work so I downloaded a 2 week trial from the website.Update the software package included with the book and this will be a much better learning tool.

I have always been a fan of all things Egyptian. If this book, and the entertaining tone in how it is written, had been part of History class in school, I would have gotten far better grades. Phillips writes with humor and keeps you engaged. It’s interesting to see how much an ancient civilization is based on our modern human soap opera themes. Or is it the other way around? Great informative read. I’m looking forward to other books written by him.

Very low-grade scholarship. Little understanding evidenced of the changes that happened over three thousand years. Mixing of stories from pre-dynastic times with Hellenistic ones. Absolute pronouncements of incomplete facts. It would be better to know nothing than to read this and think you know something.

This is my third book in about two days by this author and I'm still loving it. I've always been interested in ancient Egypt and its myths ever since I can remember. I read books about the subject, watch documentaries and movies and go to museums - everything more I can learn about ancient Egypt is fantastic. And I must say I learned a lot with this book. Some things were familiar to me but there's always more to learn. As always with one of these books by Martin R. Phillips, it was well-written yet not too academic and it also read very fast since it's only fifty pages long. It's just how I like it. There's no way to fit every single god or myth in something this short but I thought the author did a good job with trying to contain the important gods and myths. So yes, another highly enjoyable, interesting and quick read!

This Book was beautifully written It had tales and Egyptian Myths That I had never heard before! It also explained how the Egyptians viewed the soul!

I loved this read, Its really curious how the ancients lived in the past, one of my favorite civilizations is the Egyptians and this book was a really good read to know more about them

the only thing I didn't care for is the diff lang spells they have in the book and I found a note from the dad but nothing from the 3 sisters. at the end of the show it showed that all 3 of the sisters wrote messages for the future witches (their kids) in the book but yet theres nothing in the book at all.

Came as expected! A few pages are missing such as the Halliwell sisters’ final entries, To Make Lover’s Dream Come True, the page that Phoebe created on Cole human form. But all in all I love it a whole bunch! 4 and half stars deserved and but it only shows 4 received!

Tom Lyons does it again in his 3rd installment of the "Living with Bigfoot" series with "Alterior Motives"! the escalation of encounters, coupled with the continuing twists and turns had me zipping through this book until i finished it in less than an hour! I cant wait for the next book to read about the lady in the straw hat, the neighbours, and most of all, the encounters! The more the story unfolds, the more questons there to be answered. as with the 2 previous books, ive recommended "Alterior Motives' to my Sasquath enthusiast friends!

Wow! What a great book! I’m a believer as well. I was camping with my family at Big Lake in Arizona; we experienced hearing strange yells, and then later in our tent, growling right against our tent! It scared the crap out of me and I really thought I would not survive the night! Well, I woke up in the morning alive! I will never forget that experience! Can’t wait for the next book!

I do enjoy this saga very much....but....how long will I need to keep paying $3.00 for this continuing story?

When I first started this series wasn't sure but now I can't keep from waiting for the next book to come out. They are short and put all together it would be a plus-but will just keep up with them as the are available. Thanks Mr. Lyons.

My only problem with the book is just when I was really getting into it it just up and ended

The little bit of preview that Amazon allows (or is it the author) was really basic stuff. So I purchased the book based on the reviews as combined, it looked worth reading.After receiving it, not so much. I wonder if, as with many other books, the first reviews that are all 5 stars were family or friends of the author. This does happen quite a bit. Based on the reviews, I wanted to love this book too. I just can't. I started to read it and as I got further into, it just got to be too much information all at once. Information overload. Then I checked out "Dr. Daryl's 80/20 Day: My go to regimen" (page 177) and that was it. I'm done. It seems like this is the kind of lifestyle best suited for those that have a lot of time for themselves and want to be hungry all the time- not to mention the 5 green drinks (his brand) per day with an Amazon price of $2.33 per serving. That comes out to about $373.00 per month just for that one drink.Just not for me. I'm sure I can find something less severe to reduce my acid issues.

More wonderful information for improving health from Dr. Daryl! This book is very informative, easy to read and contains many great recipes. I’ve been following Dr. Daryl’s Get off your Acid plan and using his products for a few years and feel better and more energized then ever. I really like that the book suggests when starting to gradually introduce more alkaline food and decrease acidic foods, which makes it much easier to implement and more realistic to follow long term. I also like the 80/20 rule, since there are a few acidic items I struggle eliminating completely from my diet.

Life changing! As a mother of 2 young boys I want to be around for them as long as possible! After learning that 95% of cancers are due to environment and NOT genetics it’s made me reconsider the choices I make when feeding my family and I!

This book is phenomenal! I had tried many other things before I stumbled on this and I am glad to have found Dr. Daryl. It is not a FAD diet, but a life changing miracle. I followed some of the 7 steps and using recipes I lost over 5lbs in a week. It was not just lbs, but inches as well. I also had an abscess that could not heal after multiple rounds of antibiotics, but is gone since I stated this way of eating. My body is naturally healing itself. If you are looking to really heal your body, take control of ailments, manage or reverse chronic health conditions, you need this book!

And the intense suggestions such as how to detox (oxygenated chamber at home?) grow sprouted grains, have your water pass seven intensely stringent tests, memorize the alkalinity and acidity hierarchies while fasting, castor oil wrapping, lymphatic massaging and good combining will might make you a little intense. Add in life such as work and kids and other duties not to mention parties and other life events this will seem like a massive juggling act. The recipes made me feel hungry and the constant pushing for his supplements was obvious and annoying. He has great points no doubt. But presented with very little practical help. Not a winner in my collection. You might like it if the affirmations sounds doable and want to spend your time exercising on a trampoline. Yes. You read that right.

This book has been life changing for our family. I bought the book originally because I wanted to learn more about balancing my pH. And what I got was so much more. We have learned so much from this book. This book will tell you exactly what food does once it’s consumed, how it’s digested and then how it effects your body. And so much more. My husband and I have done the 7 day cleanse with these recipes and we both lost weight and have never felt better. We felt so good that we have continued to eat like this and make the changes in our diet because we feel so great. We have less inflammation in our body, bloating is gone, skin looks glowing, a lot of energy and our pH levels have returned to a healthy level. I have shared this read with more people than I ever have with another book. It’s that good!
