This book is expensive, but there are other options, one I wish I knew about. Checkout the publishers website cengage brain. Yes you can download the tools from the Palisade website. It's still a pain in the butt.We both know if you are reading this you are in a course looking for the best deal, keep looking.After getting it, I think digital is the wrong way to go with it. If you are going to use it a a reference, hardcover. If you want to just pass the course, rent it.All in all the steps remind me a great deal of process improvement, same logical processes.Update, as the class progresses, I am considering purchasing the hard cover edition too. The kindle is just not cutting it.
Update on the review 5/23/2012After two cycles with Cengage support, we finally got excellent support from Jeanette. She provided explicit instructions that allowed me to download an updated version of the software (@RISK 5.7) that worked in my environment (Win7, Excel 2010). We did have to do one final additional step (move the license file to "Palisade / System" directory) that was not in her instructions. We provided her feedback to add this step and thanked her for her support. We are having issues with teh SQL Server add-on optional feature, but this is a Microsoft issue and definitely not Cengage. Updating the review rating to 4 stars--------------------------------------Original reviewOrdered new ISBN-13: 978-0-495-01508-6 that arrived new with the companion student software in separate CD case that is labeled ISBN-13: 978-0-534-40919-7 for my husband's class. Book and CD appeared to be new. He tried installing the software. No access code is readily obvious in either the book or the companion CD. Palisade points to Cengage. Cengage has replied to a request for support telling me to "look in the book for the access code". Provided them the ISBN of the book and CD and asked explicitly where the "access code" can be found. Waiting for an answer. It is unclear to us whether the book is really not new and the access card has been removed or whether the support from the Cengage is not helpful.---------------------I would recommend buying this book and hopefully Cengage will provide the excellent feedback that I got from Jeanette on other's first contact with the support desk.
This is a fairly standard decision analysis textbook. My biggest frustration is that it is written in a very non-technical manner, as if for students that are afraid of math. It would be a great book for teaching DA in a business curriculum. It's less desirable for an engineering department, where I teach.
It's an OK book. A bit too wordy BUT examples are clear enough that you can understand the material and they walk you through how to use the software step by step. Definitely a good book to have as reference for decision making.
Book came as advertised. No issues. I dropped the class and returned it. The return process was very simple and quick.
I'm really happy with this book. The Amazon writeup said that it had a lot of practical examples and they were right. But it also had a terrific teaching style and a good strategy for organizing thinking to make the most of info that one has. I have already had two opportunities to put the strategy to the test and was astounded how well it worked. This is a definite keeper for me and I highly recommend it.
This book is a great complement to a class, but more importantly this book really could stand alone without an instructor guiding you along. The examples and step break-down allow students to practice the methology without having to rely on any other resources.Many books require the use of other resources or a course. This did not.
This book was great for learning how to properly analyze decisions and get a decent background in Engineering Economics.The software that came with the book did not work so I downloaded a 2 week trial from the website.Update the software package included with the book and this will be a much better learning tool.
