Kipnis (Ecstasy Unlimited) argues in five loosely connected essays that just about everyone-from the religious right to militant feminists-misunderstands and misjudges pornography, which she considers a form of fantasy that is an end in itself and not the cause of something else, such as rape. The individual essays deal with a homosexual sadomasochist who made the mistake of discussing his fantasies on the Internet with an undercover cop and was entrapped and sentenced to 33 years in prison; America's fat phobia and how it is reflected in fat pornography; transvestite pornography, focusing on the revealing photographic self-portraits featured in drag publications; and the rise and fall of Larry Flynt and Hustler, with an emphasis on the magazine's populist political philosophy. The disjointed concluding essay, "How to Look at Pornography," tries, unsuccessfully, to pull all this material together, touching along the way on subjects that range from masturbation to Andrea Dworkin's alleged misreading of pornography as a feminist issue to Jeffrey Masson's legal battles with Janet Malcolm and others. Kipnis's individual essays make a stronger case than does her book as a whole, but she is a lively and engaging writer who argues, often convincingly, that we would be better off simply thinking of pornography as just another form of science fiction. A serious, non-sensational consideration of the meaning of pornography related to class structure, the culture wars, individual psychology and sexual identity. Most particularly, it attacks the simplistic notion that pornography necessarily leads to action and emphasizes the functioning of fantasies. The author is clearly a Freudian and probably a Marxist (although the latter is not totally clear) and has many very interesting observations and analyses, conveyed with wit and not a little humor.

This is Laura Kipnis at her analytical best. If you've read her more recent books: this one maintains her usual snark/humor, while being much more analytical than her recent stuff. Not that I don't love her more recent stuff--it's wonderful--but if you are looking for an analysis that shows how different theoretical backgrounds can be used to illuminate a field of study from multiple and opposing perspectives that each shed different kinds of light on the topic, this book is a tour de force in that way.

Don't know how I ran across this on Amazon. First was searching for Italian poets then saw this. Just sad. I have a friend who works in the ER and let me tell you - "snuff" films, extreme bondage, and violent sex towards women are real and they DON'T empower women!

You'll certainly never look at a Chicken McNugget the same way again.Pollan approaches his mission not as an activist but as a naturalist: "The way we eat represents our most profound engagement with the natural world." All food, he points out, originates with plants, animals and fungi. "[E]ven the deathless Twinkie is constructed out of... well, precisely what I don't know offhand, but ultimately some sort of formerly living creature, i.e., a species. We haven't yet begun to synthesize our foods from petroleum, at least not directly."Pollan's narrative strategy is simple: he traces four meals back to their ur-species. He starts with a McDonald's lunch, which he and his family gobble up in their car. Surprise: the origin of this meal is a cornfield in Iowa. Corn feeds the steer that turns into the burgers, becomes the oil that cooks the fries and the syrup that sweetens the shakes and the sodas, and makes up 13 of the 38 ingredients (yikes) in the Chicken McNuggets.Indeed, one of the many eye-openers in the book is the prevalence of corn in the American diet; of the 45,000 items in a supermarket, more than a quarter contain corn. Pollan meditates on the freakishly protean nature of the corn plant and looks at how the food industry has exploited it, to the detriment of everyone from farmers to fat-and-getting-fatter Americans. Besides Stephen King, few other writers have made a corn field seem so sinister.Later, Pollan prepares a dinner with items from Whole Foods, investigating the flaws in the world of "big organic"; cooks a meal with ingredients from a small, utopian Virginia farm; and assembles a feast from things he's foraged and hunted.This may sound earnest, but Pollan isn't preachy: he's too thoughtful a writer, and too dogged a researcher, to let ideology take over. The Omnivore's Dilemma exhibits this same gift; a Chicken McNugget, for example, illustrates our consumption of corn and, in turn, agribusiness's oil dependency. In a journey that takes us from an "organic" California chicken farm to Vermont, Pollan asks basic questions about the moral and ecological consequences of our food. Critics agree it's a wake-up call and, written in clear, informative prose, also entertaining. Most found Pollan's quest for his foraged meal the highlight, though the Los Angeles Times faulted Pollan's hypocritical method of "living off the land." Many also voiced a desire for a more concrete vision for the future. But if the book doesn't outline a diet plan, it's nonetheless a loud, convincing call for change.

I'm 13 and as a requirement for my AP Human Geography Class I read this book. I enjoyed the language and style of writing even though it was complicated and slightly hard to understand in some spots. The rich descriptions of landscapes and emotions, took me through a range of feelings and made me confront "the omnivores dilemma" head on. This book is very informative and has helped me understand more about the food system. It has also given me hope that I will be able to see Joel Salatin's dream in my lifetime. I don't feel like there was a clear answer on what an individual could do to help the cause, but I'm sure it's not hard to find on the internet with food being such a popular subject nowadays. I would recommend this book to anybody, not only interested in food but human nature, the relationships between plants, animals, and fungi, government, and an opportunity for a richer, more natural life.

To be or not to be a vegetarian?This is a very interesting book - well thought out and investigated. I am not certain that I want to consume meat again as Pollan tells the reader how these feeder lot cows, pigs and chickens actually live and die. Really, not my idea of humane. Just as interesting is his investigation of corn. It is amazing how corn is in absolutely everything from high-fructose corn syrup to fish food; gasoline to paint; fish to .... well, you get the idea. While more and more acreage is devoted to mono-crops, chiefly corn, we are the "benefactors" of everything that is corn related. Feed lot cattle are fed corn to fatten them up even though it makes them terribly sick and reduces the number of valuable nutrients available to grass fed cows. Multiply that by lamb, chicken, goat, salmon, tilapia, shrimp and you get an idea of why you are eating corn at every meal whether you know it or not. Compound this with the fact that 3 companies control the corn product from seed to pesticide to fertilizer and this monoculture is there to get you in one way or another. Corn that can be sprayed with pesticides that kill everything except the corn - bugs, weeds..... Makes you wonder what you are eating. Anyhow, Pollan has done a wonderful job investigating the food chain and its effect on the environment be it our internal flora or life on earth.

Omnivore's Dilemma was assigned to me in an upper-level economics course, along with other similar books. From the very lengthy list of books, this and Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy were my absolute favorites. To be upfront, this book it is moderate to leftist in its opinions, as is Michael Klare's book, but both books opened my eyes to an entirely new way of thinking about my Economics & Policy degree. Years later, I'm still referencing them in papers & lectures I give. I highly recommend them to people in all disciplines, including casual readers who are just beginning to inform themselves about these topics. Michael Pollan wrote this book in a casual manner, as if sitting around a table with the reader and having a conversation about this great journey he took, yet at the end of the conversation the reader is left with a great amount of knowledge that they can use in countless ways. A great, fun read that I can't imagine anyone not liking. I can't recommend this book more! Happy Readings!!!

Fascinating book. My son sent it to me as a “must read”. He was right! The book takes an in depth look at where our foods come from and the economic, chemical, environmental and social impact of the process. The author takes a long look at the overproduction of corn in this country (who knew?) and how apparently as a result of this government supported process, many animals raised for meat (cows, chickens, pigs) are fed corn as part of a mass production process. This changes the chemical makeup of the meat, results in hormone and antibiotic use, and cruel conditions for the animals, who are raised simply as production units with everything designed to maximize weight gained per unit of corn required to feed them. He goes on to look at what “organic” has come to mean in this country, (not much), and then to work briefly on a farm which really does raise cows, pigs and chickens in fields of grass in a sustainable way. He also discusses vegetarianism, presenting some of the arguments pro and con. From there he decides he will eat meat but needs to experience hunting, so we get his perspective on this, as well as going into forests to gather mushrooms.For me, this was a truly eye-opening and fascinating book. I felt like I learned a lot of things I should have already known and now have much more insight into. Also, his whole approach to food just felt so wholesome as to make me want to move our own lifestyle in that direction, particularly making more effort to buy locally produced food items, even if they cost more. Also, to pay more attention to where the foods we buy come from and think about the carbon footprint of, for example, blueberries flown here by jet from Central or South America. (Why not buy them in summer as preserves or jelly and just not eat them fresh out of season?). So, all in all most highly recommended to be read by everyone!

I'm a life long Dolly Parton fan and love this book. Her story is touching and inspirational so happy to see a bio for kids but it's also an easy fun read for grown ups also. I got this for a Christmas gift for my mom who also loves Dolly. I hope they will make one on Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lalanne and Lucille Ball someday. Marilyn would especially be nice to see.

As a third grade teacher, I love using Who Was/Who Is books in the classroom for independent reading activities. Students love reading about Dolly Parton. As a native Tennessean, I love teaching them about Dolly and all she has done to help her hometown. It proves that one person can make a huge difference. I highly recommend this book!

My kids all love Dolly Parton. They know her from the Imagination Library. My 11 year old wanted to do a report on her so we waited until this book came out. It has lots of fun stories from her childhood that I had never heard. Would recommend it.

This is an excellent book for the serious home gardener. It covers a wealth of technical details resulting from the best soil science currently available. Yet, it covers these details in common everyday language. It is very down to earth (excuse the pun) in its treatment of complex issues related to improvement of garden soils and crop success. It is useful for both those interested in organic farming, such as myself, and those who practice traditional farming practices. The principles it presents apply to the home garden as well as the large farm. It is by far the best book of its kind I have read.

Great explanation of the soil and its many levels of complexity. A must have for the serious gardener who wants to avoid unnecessary and ineffective soil modifications - and to provide your plantings with the best chances for success!

Rather limited information, not as much good information as I had hoped.

I read extensively about how to garden and I've read a few books on soil improvement. I found this at my library and I am so impressed that I am going to buy a copy. It doesn't give just the routine advice about growing cover crops, applying compost, and minimum tillage. It explains that every soil is different and elaborates on the pros and cons of every soil improvement technique. There is a lot of science in this book which I love. When you've been gardening as long as I have, you want to move beyond step 1-2-3 and think for yourself to make your own best solutions. Thank you to the author for helping me do that.

This is a wonderfully written book. We are orgainc farmers of 10 years and I have always been at a disadvantage because of a lack of a science background. It is clearly written, and the author makes what is usually presented as a fairly dry topic and turns it into a page turner. We are always looking for good ways to convey these complex topics to our farm interns, and we have now found it. Great illustrations, good descriptions and a nice flow. It is clear that the author loves soils and I came away excited explore our soils further.

I've been gardening for 46 years. This book was recommended by the American Horticultural Society in their publications. This book is worthless.

I read to be entertained not to have someone's political views shoved sown my throat! One of this author's previous books was the same way - the author's political views wrapped into one of his books. I vowed that I would only give him one more chance and then that would be it for me. So he now had his one more chance. I got half way through the book, realized that I was, once again, having his political opinions thrown in my face, and threw the book in the garbage without finishing it! This now the 3rd author that I have stopped reading for this very same issue. There are two others on my list at present and I will wait and see what their next offering has in store for me! Books should be neutral so that they appeal to all types of readers. Well, this author just lost all of my business!

This was barely interesting. The storyline is not captivating and the whole book moves at a snail's pace, with rare exceptions. And the political parts continue to be a snooze, and got old many books ago. By the way, Holly Barker running for president? Ridiculous. Really disappointed. One of the worst efforts by a Woods ghost writer yet, and there have been some clunkers! Woods would never have written this drivel. For what I expect from a Stuart Woods novel compared to what I got, plus paying a ridiculously high amount for a Kindle book--Grade: F

Boring boring very weak on twists and turns. He's taking advantage of his readers again. Woods needs to go back to his roots and give Stone some interesting subject matter. Woods is so stuck in the mud about his liberal left wing beliefs that it is destroying my reading enjoyment. I will seriously consider buying further installments. I am greatly disappointed in his recent works.

Stone finds himself in the middle of another delicate situation. He is suddenly contacted by Dino's ex-wife, who informs him that her deceased father had a hidden safe she has just uncovered. Inside the safe they find quite a few incriminating documents against several associates of Eduardo's who he kept dossiers on. One of the files is against someone whose family is currently trying to get the grandson in a position to run for President of the USA. Stone takes this information the DA and so begins a cat and mouse game. Stone is informed he now has a target on his back and begins to take evasive maneuvers. He also decides to enlist the help of a journalist and begins to build a case. Stone, of course, finds himself fancied by the journalist and so beings another new relationship for Stone. The book was a quick, easy read and did introduce some new characters. I also like when Bob Cantor shows up in a book. The ending was nicely done and I am intrigued to see where this story line may go.

The storyline was okay, but Woods sucked himself back into politics. As I've said before, it's okay to reference politics in a story but it should sound like it's coming from the characters and not the author. In Woods case, it always sounds like it's coming from him. That and his product/news/brand placements.

I stopped buying Stone Barrington when I got incredibly sick and tired of Stone buying and selling the world in one day and hopping in and out of multiple beds. However, for some reason I was stupid enough to buy this book on audible and once again I am beyond disgusted! Not only does it follow the same old tired formula, but the author has decided that readers also have to be subjected to his politics! Enough! I've wasted enough money and suggest you don't waste any of yours on this nonsense.

One of the best of the series. The main story line carries through and its much more than just Stone Barrington’s female and financial wheeling and dealings. Clean work with “historical dealing” with only one mixup and that being the return from the dead of Pietro.Looking forward to the next book in the spring.

I have read every book up to this point and I love the Stone Barrington character. I did not even finish this one. I am done.
