Telling Yourself the Truth by William Backus and Marie Chaplan aims to help the reader find their way out of depression, anxiety, fear, anger, and other common problems by applying what they refer to as the "principles of misbelief therapy". What this book takes on is the negative self talk that goes on in our heads and uses Biblical tools to rid us of these behaviors.While there are parts of the book I agree with, such as changing negative attitudes and that we have control over our own reactions and actions, I do take issue with what they feel like is somebody's choice versus what is a medical or mental health condition.Telling someone they can "think" or "believe" their way out of depression is not just wrong but it's dangerous. Depression is a chemical disorder in the brain. I would hope the authors wouldn't suggest to a diabetic that they could think themselves out of a lack of blood sugar control.This book could be dangerous, even deadly to someone with a mental health disorder such as anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar, and others. Needing an attitude adjustment is one thing. Needing professional medical help for a disease is different. Just as God created man in his own image, well, He created us with all sorts of problems too from depression to paralysis. Every day we tell ourselves many lies about ourselves that keep us from reaching the potential we have and teh purpose God has for us. I've had hundreds of people attend the small groups I teach on this and so many lives have been changed!

This book is very enlightening. The foundation of the author's belief system is Christianity, and there are a few scriptural references, but anyone seeking help could benefit from the truths stated in this book. I read it all the way through and plan to read it again with a highlighter in hand. The author is an experienced therapist, not just someone with a few ideas. If you have trouble with self esteem, relationships, addictions, depression, or the other common problems that seem to bother a great many of us, you could find help in this book.

This book was amazing we are taught to recognize and then redirect or eliminate damaging SELF TALK. Most of us already understand many of the concepts in this book. When reading the book I discovered not every chapter spoke directly to me. But a book like this does not require each chapter to connect with your own life. Primarily because we all walk a slightly different path but have similar life experiences. This book completely regenerated the way I think about myself, energized my faith and increased my self confidence. Tar baby is a metaphor suggesting our 'SELF TALK' is a controllable attitude or mind set. Many things we were taught and especially the way we speak to ourselves sticks to us, accumulates until we are so heavy with pain, disappointment, sorrow and fear we are stuck in a rut covered with thick tar. While on this earth we need to deal with the consequences of sin. It is maring our souls and destroying our self worth but God sees us through his son and loves us unconditionally a healthy lifestyle requires work. This book will teach and gently encourage us to walk in his ways reminding us to read his word. Therefore washing our hearts and minds by the healing power and purity of God's word. Learn to recognize signs of self destructive self talk... What your triggers are. You will not be disappointed read it and pass it on to your loved ones or friends!!! That's what I did. Bought 2 more books gave them to my daughters and then my sister bought the book read it and was impacted positively it is very easy to read and understand! Don't become a tar baby be regenerated and liberated it's a journey but attainable!!!

About the Author

Penny Kittle teaches freshman composition at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. She was a teacher and literacy coach in public schools for 34 years, 21 of those spent at Kennett High School in North Conway. She is the co-author of 180 Days with Kelly Gallagher, and is the author of Book Love, and Write Beside Them, which won the James Britton award. She also co-authored two books with her mentor, Don Graves, and co-edited (with Tom Newkirk) a collection of Graves' work, Children Want to Write. She is the president of the Book Love Foundation and was given the Exemplary Leader Award from NCTE's Conference on English Leadership. In the summer Penny teaches graduate students at the University of New Hampshire Literacy Institutes. Throughout the year, she travels across the U.S. and Canada (and once in awhile quite a bit farther) speaking to teachers about empowering students through independence in literacy. She believes in curiosity, engagement, and deep thinking in schools for both students and their teachers. How many times have we heard the laments of parents and teachers, “if only my kids read more”? Penny Kittle in Book Love tackles the problem of students who don’t read, and offers English teachers tactics to combat this problem. The summative message of her book is that the first step in getting students to read is to get them to enjoy what they are reading. For a future teacher, this book is a treasure trove of ideas to get kids to enjoy reading.She begins her book by informing her readers of the accepted fact that only twenty percent of students actually read the literature they are given in class. Combining that fact with the idea that students will have to read between 200 and 600 pages in college weekly to be successful, it creates a problematic situation that lines students up to fail once they hit higher education. It is obvious that students need to get reading, and they need to do so quickly!As a pre-service English teacher, one of the thoughts that haunts my psyche, is what if the kids won’t read? I love the ideas that Kittle introduces to promote reading success. First of all, she has students measure their reading speed in pages per week and then measuring how that changes over the course of the year, and then she gives interesting ideas on how to keep track of their reading. My favorite of these is have students do “roller-coaster” reading, in which they balance complex reading with enjoyable simpler reading. Every time they finish what they deem deep, difficult reading, they follow it up with shorter more lightweight piece. It keeps the kids from burning out from the harder texts, and it keeps them reading. She also has the students rank their books in terms of difficulty and also has them reflect upon how their reading rate changes over the course of a term, semester, etc..While I love her ideas, the sheer volume she has her students read is my main, and really only point of contention with this text. She says that it is within reason that students can read up to sixty books a year. Even if students can read that much, the question is “should they?” To me, that many books can encourage “speed reading” which is something that Kittle chastises for being ineffective. It also does not take into account (as referenced by the student reading logs in the book) the textbooks that students read in other classes. I totally understand and support having high goals for students to strive to achieve, but I feel goals that are too high could do students an ultimate disservice. My absolute favorite portion of Kittle’s book is her chapter on conferences. Not only does she provide an extensive rationale of the positive influence of conferencing she also gives her readers guidelines to follow for the conferences. To me, this chapter is the section that I can foresee myself going back to again and again during my teaching career. She gives guiding questions to use when dealing with all different types of students (for example: those who won’t read, those who are struggling, those who don’t feel challenged, etc). Along with these guided questions, she gives examples that she faced in her own career and how one can expect these conferences to go. She makes you really feel like you’re in the classroom with her students, and her word choice shows you just how much of a difference she can make with only a three or four minute chat with her kids. It is at this point in the book that I realized that the trepidations I have towards teaching are totally normal, every teacher has faced them, and because of that, people like Kittle have given us strategies to fall back on that actually work. It was at that moment that I was very thankful that I bought this book. Despite a spot or two where I disagreed, I would wholeheartedly recommend Book Love to every teacher, in-service or pre-service, because its strategies are so useful I can’t imagine myself hitting the classroom without it on my bookshelf. Whether it is creating a classroom library (something she makes sound so easy) or her description of “big idea” books, you will find yourself saying both “why didn’t I think of that” and “I can’t wait to use this!” I believe that every teacher, of any subject can create a fun and comfortable classroom of readers by taking Kittle’s tactics and molding them with their own ideas and personality.

This is one of the best, most inspiring “teaching books” that I’ve ever read. Penny Kittle has a love of reading and books that makes me know we are kindred spirits. Her ideas and experience for sharing that love in her school inspires me to keep doing what I’m doing.I devoured this book slowly, both so I could absorb the thoughts and so my wallet could recover from all the amazing title recommendations. You might say that’s not devouring then, but I assure you it is.

Love, love, love this book! This is a great companion text for any Donalyn Miller followers (i.e., "The Book Whisperer," "Reading in the Wild"). It has completely changed how I teach in my HS ELA classroom! I highly recommend this book!

This book changed my teaching life. Seriously. It is THAT good. I balked at the price tag, but I'd have gladly paid four times that amount for the inspiration and practical applications, all (FINALLY) designed for high school classrooms. I've been able to implement after reading it.

Kittle shows us why and how to motivate our teen students to find books they love and, in the process, improve their reading levels - which is something we are not accomplishing with our current, outdated methods. Book #122 Read in 2016Book Love by Penny KittleThis book was a great read about establishing and maintaining a community of readers in your classroom. I shared parts of it with the students in my Young Adult Literature and would recommend it to my teaching colleagues. I enjoyed it.

I took an online class based on this book, and I did learn some new things, even though I have been teaching for a long time. It's a motivating, helpful book.

If you are considering this book because you want to make changes in your life read, Immunity to Change, by Lehay and Kegan, instead. Use the tools in their book, if you really want a system for improving negative thinking. Unlike this book it provides a system to get to the why you have negative thinking in the first place which allows for changes from that point. Negative thinking comes about as a protective device so affirmations alone won't change a system that while hindering you was set in place to help you. The author writes about the power of the subconscious and then states that repeating an affirmation 20 times for weeks will make that power accessible. I positivly doubt it. If I have an allergic reaction to shellfish no amount of affirming that I don't will change it. Shots or other ways of addressing the hyped up immunity might, but not affirmations. His encouragement to add "yet" to sentences when describing why something didn't work is probably the best part of the book. It keeps you open to trying something else. I encouage you to try something else instead of this book. Disclosure: I received this book without cost in exchange for my honest review.

This 38-page booklet is sold for $0.00 on kindle and $49.99 in paperback. I'm giving it 3-stars for the following reasons:First, immediately knocking down stars for touting a price for $49.99 despite being far, far away from that in value. There is nothing you could tell me in under 50 pages that would be worth $50. Sorry. It's a very short book and, if you're a little tech savvy, you can find the same information online for free. I find it really hard to trust such an outrageous price tag.Second: this is a great booklet for a beginner, i.e. someone who has no clue where to start but has been told their whole life that they have a "bad attitude" or if they "just put [their] mind to it!" they'll do great. I would give this book a pass for pretty much anyone else. For example, one tip is to "unlock your subconscious", and that this can be done by repeating a particular phrase every time. The truth is, a mindset gets changed through repetition, but that's not explained very well in that particular chapter. It's not just about "unlocking your subconscious", it's also about doing this in the correct, positive way with every thought that crosses your mind.Third: I DID find this booklet useful, so I gave it some stars. I have mild depression, moderate anxiety, and mild BPD. The combination of the three creates a really fresh environment for negative thought processes, and having a short list on what I should be doing has been serving as a good reminder for me. This booklet may help you when caring for a friend or a loved one that has similar issues like I do - I know that when I showed my SO some of these tricks, he started integrating them into our daily lives and I've noticed an improvement in my mental health.I think the biggest thing missing here is probably depth of information (everything feels very surface level - I would've appreciated references to scientific studies and WHY the brain responds to certain kind of stimuli over others), as well as worksheets and "practice problems" (it might be difficult to do real practice problems here by walking through it theoretically, but there's surely a way to frame it that would be useful to people).If you're on the fence about buying this book, I would just caution you that it's going to be very short and very lacking when it comes to the read. But, I will give credit where credit is due, and in my book this was worth three stars because of the way it's been helping me. I am required to disclose that I received this book at a discount in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

The author makes a quantum case for the existence of God and justifies it by saying that the Bible can be interpreted from a quantum point of view. He equates belief in God with belief in the Bible as being the inspired word of God. He fails to take into account that many people believe in God, but see the Bible as only the words of men. Muslims believe in God, but not entirely what's in the Bible. They see the Quran as being the inspired word of God. The author also sees God as being a Trinity. Jews believe in God, but not as a Trinity. This book didn't need all the Bible quotes. He could have spoken of a Supreme Being without limiting himself to writing as though Christianity and the Bible are the norm for an understanding of God. Additionally, the awkward insertion of inane humor was unnecessary and demeaned a serious and important concept for understanding the possibility of the existence of a Supreme Being who created and sustains all that exists.

Having previously read on quantum physics and string theory, this book brought everything into wonderful focus for me. But even with no previous entry into these subjects, a reader will find this book written to reduce complex scientific issues to comprehensibility, inviting continuing study. The fact that our universe and its physical study is a source of revelation of our Creator and his omnipresence in it should not be surprising for anyone pursuing knowledge of God. Yet for those who have doubted God’s existence due to lack of evidence in our familiar 3-dimensional plus time world, this book supplies the vast accumulation of scientific data that affirms the possibility of God’s existence. Dennis Zetting makes it an enjoyable and enriching adventure.

I would have rated this book a 5 STAR had it expanded further into how the QUANTUM World supports Biblical events and truths. The subject needs more pages. LOTS more.The author's illustrations describing the mysteries of QP were quite helpful.I would have preferred the author to have taken a DIRECT aim at antheists rather than soft petal his argument. I felt the book wasn't written for those of biblical Faith.Phil Mason in QUANTUM GLORY wrote directly to a believer. A much more insightful book. Don't get me wrong, Zetting no doubt accomplished his objective. If anything, he should not have been so sensitive as not to rattle the atheists.I suggest the author follow up with a book on QP and String Theory but this time center his goal on believers. Besides, only the Spirit and Word can bring an atheist into the Kingdom. A secular and scientific argument won't do it.To Mr. Setting I suggest he focus his books on EDIFYING the BODY of Christ. Ideological or scientific arguments concerning God do NOT edify the BODY.This book will only WHET the believer's SPIRITUAL appetite. It's a start, perhaps, but the author needed to do more.Go ahead interested reader and buy the book. But understand this: you will certainly come away with a hunger for a much deeper search into the QUANTUM World. The journey will be thrilling as you gain more and more knowledge on the subject.Mr. Zetting, write again, but this time go deeper and focus on biblical believers. Feed their appetite, and forget the atheists.

I really enjoyed this book! Even though I am not a science buff, in fact have little science background, this book was accessible and very stimulating. Although a few things were too technical for my full understanding, I was able to get the main ideas and follow the thought process. I appreciated the humor and efforts to make it so readable. In fact I bought a paperback copy to share with others.Thanks for a great book.Julie

Dennis has written a great book putting together science and God. It was easy to understand from a Christian perspective and an intellectual book for a scientist. Bringing those two together is a piece of cake for Mr. Zetting. This book would be an awesome mandatory reading for any beginning scientist or Christian. Bravo Dennis!

I did not read all of the book. If you already are a Christian, the book is a no brainer. I do recommend this book for the facts it gives and is very well written.

Truly it gave me memories of my beloved homeland and a longing in my heart to return soon.Whether you buy it for yourself or as a gift, the book's great price and format (it's a paperback) are great reasons to purchase it. Being broken from the loss of Hadassah, Marcus journeys to Galilee to try to find some answers about her. She had told him that she heard God’s voice in the wind, but try as he might, he can’t. With a set of unexpected events, however, Marcus begins to understand, but he’s not sure he’ll ever understand why Hadassah was taken from him when he loved her so or be able to forgive his sister for her life choices or killing his dream. But things are not always as they seem, and God still works miracles in the lives of his children.The cover of this one looks exactly like I pictured Marcus. (The cover that is appearing for my review is not the one on the book or audio I had.) Again, I found the research impressive, and the story riveting. The head-hopping continued, and I noticed a few mispronounced words. “Julius,” the male slave, also sounded too much like “Julia,” Marcus’s sister, most of the time. I loved how this one ended, but the last part, where it just told about what happened to the family, should have been worked into story form and not just recounted.

This is the second book in a series and with the teaser at the end of the first book, you can't help but want to read the second. The main characters from the first book are still there (those that survived) and the addition of new characters only serves to give you more characters to care about.Francine Rivers does not follow all the rules of Christian fiction... and in not doing so, her work is fascinating, makes you think about what kind of person you are or could be, and gives you hope.You'll want to forego sleep reading this one.

My pastor loaned the 1st book in this trilogy to me, and after about 20 pages of it, I ordered the remaining 2 books from Amazon. I've never read anything so in depth with how I imagine events actually took place in that era, as well as the emotional upheaval that these characters experienced. I could find nothing wrong with the historical flow either. I can hardly wait to read the last one.

I often buy books for my wife, who is an avid reader. This book came well recommended by other reviewers so I bought the series. After reading the book, my wife insisted that I read it also. While it is my opinion that these books are written for women, I was surprised at how good of a read it was. I have never been a big fan of Christian fiction, mostly because the characters never seemed real to me. Even the sinners in the books had high moral standards that didn't fit the character. As an example, the pilot and the flight attendant in the first Left Behind book had been involved for months, but had never been intimate. It didn't seem real in the book or the movie. Ms Rivers paints characters with real human feelings, desires, weaknesses as well as strengths. The sinners engage in sinful acts, but without the lurid details of common fiction. There is action, violence and blood in the book that paints the people of Rome as history has shown them to be.

I really liked all three books of the series, but this was my favorite. An amazing story, well told, without the at times difficult to take brutal violence of the first book. Loved the characters and how things unfolded - just enough suspense to keep the pages turning. I will look forward to reading it again. Her books do such a great job of conveying the power of the Christian way.

It is a rare find when a sequel is as good as the original, but Francine Rivers has succeeded admirably with her second installment of this trilogy in AN ECHO IN THE DARK. After reading the first one, I knew I had to read on, but never expected this book to be as good. I don't read a lot of fiction, but have a strong feeling there will be many books by this superb writer in my future.God gives us each unique gifts in life, and he gave Francine Rivers the blessed gift of writing. She has recognized her gift and deftly uses it to glorify Christ by witnessing through her stories. I do not believe it is possible to read either of these first books of this trilogy without them strengthening ones faith, or perhaps even altering your life altogether. That's how profound these books truly are.I don't want to give away too much of the story, but readers here will most likely have already the first installment, so I will say that Rivers will make your heart ache for Hadassah's identity to be revealed, only to keep your incessantly turning page after page, mired in anguish and crying out for her precious soul to be rewarded. Throughout this book, as in the first, your emotions will run high as you smile, you cry, you rejoice in the glory of God as others accept His salvation.I anxiously await the third and final installment in this trilogy, as well as exploring other works by this author. Holding to your belief when you know the outcome is not favorable for you. Many Christians faced death in the arenaif they did not denounce God. One story is about a young woman whose father preached and was killed by his own for their lack of belief. Her mom and sister later died of starvation, her brother was murdered by Roman soldiers and she was sold into slavery. She was a living witness of her life but if she verbally acknowledged herself as a Christian she could be sent to the arena. My family and I have been busy this summer trying to hit as many of the swimming holes near us as we can, and we have not been disappointed yet. The author has done a fine job of accurately describing each of the locations so there have been no surprises as to what to expect with regards to fees, rules, amenities, etc. at the various locations. I love how the book includes both well-known areas and a few hidden gems. If you are at all "outdoorsy", this is definitely a book to add to your "Things To Do in Texas" collection.

In Houston, we need to know about all the swimming hole oasis’ to escape the heat. I love learning about new places to take a road trip to for a dip in the Summer! Great Texas travel book!

Fun book for anyone interested in Texas!

I read a wonderful article about the authors and how much they traveled and researched the book. It said they were told of other swimming holes by locals. Admittedly, I am a little disappointed in the book in that the majority of the places included in the book are well known or are state parks, with information easily obtainable on the internet or other books. I was expecting more unknown holes. That being said, it is a nice book and I love the inside tips they offer.

This book starts on page 221 goes through page 235 and then jumps to page 13. The first part is missing and pages 221-235 are repeated at the end. Not sure if I should return this or if it's a misprint for all the books. Would replace asap as I am going on a trip to Texas.

This book is what I never knew I needed. A few summers ago I tried to remember the name of that awesome swimming hole from my college years at UT, and it took a while to find it. Between Google and Yelp, I eventually did. But a book like this is exactly what I needed. No more scrolling through poorly written and incomplete reviews (if they exist at all) on Yelp.True to guidebook form, this one is clearly organized with the park or swimming hole's name, address, phone number, and web address. Below that, you get hours of operation, fees (they can vary), rules, camping options, and amenities. But the parts that really shine are the pro tips and summaries of the areas and the swimming holes themselves. The pro tips are delivered in a casual and quirky tone. I could picture a sun kissed local sharing those tips with me. The area and swimming hole summaries are beautifully written and more descriptive than the accompanying photographs. The descriptions of each region covered in the book are lovely to read as well.As a mom, I appreciated any information that related to kid safety and nearby activities. And getting the skinny on which swimming holes had places to eat either on the premises or a short drive away are awesome too.I know it is backwards to bring up the introduction last, but I thought the gravity of the underlying message would make for a better "outro" for this review. Clean up after yourself. This is said explicitly at least five times. I counted. We want other people, especially future generations, to be able to enjoy Mother Nature's wonderful amenities, so we need to do our part to ensure that these treasures are protected and maintained. I highly recommend this guidebook to Texas natives and visitors who enjoy the great outdoors and water activities. Like me, I think you will be pleasantly surprised to see how many swimming holes are just a short drive away.
