The combined printing (chord diagrams, staff and tab) is very useful for finger picking. The pages are smaller than typewriter size and the lines are close together so careful marking is required. There is some bleed through from page front to page back which is annoying.If they had used bigger, better paper, I would rate it higher.

I'm taking guitar lessons and we are using a number of songs from this book. It is well organized and each song includes the music notations, chords and strumming patterns or finger picking patterns. An excellent addition to any guitar instruction.

I sometimes use this book while teaching guitar lessons. It's definitely not a waste of time or money as stated in another review. This book is more of a sampling of material and method as opposed to an in-depth study of each song. You'll have fun learning to play some popular songs. It's worth the money.

I should preface this by saying that before buying this book I tried to get the song list from the publisher without success. I'd only seen the previous edition which is ~70 pages shorter. But the organization of the previous edition was a joke. It was a compilation of 4 books slapped together so it was hard to find what you were looking for. So I bought this. It is indeed longer but near as I can tell has only ~2/3 the songs as the previous edition. It is especially frustrating because the songs I was learning from the previous edition aren't in the new "omnibus".The organization also remains ridiculous. For example, on page 202 you will find "Book 3 Page 4" and on the facing page 203 is "Book 2 Pages 12-14". Personally, I don't care what came from what original books, I just wanted a songbook and reference to the original means nothing to me.The songs I've tried, I've liked and I like a lot of the songs in the book. But everyone's tastes are different so I'd check the list of what songs are in the book before you buy it. That is if you can find the list.

Great songs to play along with. This will be perfect for our group play along.

Great for beginner. Simple note patterns and strum patterns that are great for learning. I recommend the book. BUT those who complain about lack of organization are correct. It is poorly organized. AND explanations might help. For example, I have no idea what "T" means in the stroke patterns. Thumb?

"I was disappointed in this edition. The open book depicted on the cover suggests there is detailed strumming information for each song, as was the case with the earlier books, but instead there is only a very small graphic showing the strum pattern. I thought the picture on the cover was misleading."

Simplified versions of more complex sounds. Finger picking and strumming pattersn provided for most songs. Good go by that allows you to branch out. Over all, a fairly decent beginner to intermediate songbook.

However, where MI6 is responsible for the U.K.'s security against international threats, the Laundry works to protect Britain from inter-dimensional and extraterrestrial threats. The Laundry's work is made yet more difficult, as it must protect Britons not only from incursions by those beings pressing to invade our dimension, but must also try to keep hidden the very knowledge of the eldritch Cthulhoid monstrosities lurking beyond this dimension, below the earth's mantle, and at the depths of our seas.If Stross' first Laundry book, The Atrocity Archives, was reminiscent of a 21st Century thaumaturgic Len Deighton, this second novel is an unlikely mash-up of Ian Fleming's James Bond (both books and especially films), and the works of H. P. Lovecraft. Our protagonist finds himself in a mind-meld with a beautiful female spy from the very darkest depths-- the CIA. Yes, and she's also a mer-creature, complete with gills. And has a daemon, a succubus, riding her, which creates some rather awkward situations. The villain is very much an evil construct from the Blofeld/Dr. No school of villainy, with a mind set on world domination.Well, that's one of the villains. There is also the Total Quality Management-obsessed, paperclip counting bureaucrats for whom he works. And he can't even shoot them.The book, although light-hearted, must be read carefully to get the full impact of Stross' cheerfully perverse humor. Not only are there multiple Bond and Lovecraftian references (and send-ups!), but there are computer hacker jokes, the comic and unlikely tricking out of a Smart Car with gadgetry even less likely than it is illegal, and a beautiful, deadly violinist.At the end of the novel there is an added on, delightful short story, plus three or four essays of the author's musings on Ian Fleming and the Bond adventures, on the morphing of villainy from nation-state to the corporate world, on espionage post-World War II. Don't skip them because they're not fiction-- they are worth reading, even if they're somewhat dated by having been written before either Brexit or the most recent U.S. elections. I'd love to see him update them!Recommended.

Charles Stross' 2006 novel "The Jennifer Morgue (Laundry Files Book 2)" actually contains a 30 page short story tacked on to the end ("PIMPF"). But, it's completely unrelated to the vast bulk of this book, so I'm treating it as a free add-on and ignoring it (it's OK). In this 2nd entry in his "Laundry Files" series, Stross has changed the tone a bit by reducing the Science Fiction aspect (mathematics and computers) and emphasizing the Spy Thriller (in this case, a la James Bond). But, in general, the story is just as well-written as the previous book. My biggest issue with it is the two fairly graphic instances of voyeuristic demon death sex he's included. I really could have done without reading those. But, on the other hand, Stross has a some very good reasons (plot, theme, and structure) for including them (i.e., they're not gratuitous). So, I'm not dinging the book for them. On the OTHER other hand, there is a problem with the point of view in those scenes which is never explained. My other issues with the book are even more minor:- The nature of Bob's partner isn't well-explained until about a third of the way through the book. The early implication is one thing (I can't be specific because of spoilers), but that falls apart and we're left wondering until a more refined explanation arises much later.- There's no reason for the very existence of the Power Point presentation at the beginning which sets things in motion.- After the second VDDS, Bob's partner mysteriously ends up in his hotel room despite locks and wards and there's never any explanation of how (or even why).- While swimming naked (no doubt about it), Bob's partner somehow comes up with a dagger.And, that's pretty much it. It's an interesting, well-written, fast-paced story that I'm rating at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

Lighter on the satire, heavier on the adventure, still a fun ride.If you read the first book in this series, then honestly this book is probably better written than that one. That said, I liked the first one more. However, in terms of a Did-I-Enjoy-This-Book scale, it remains equal. The Atrocity Archives and The Jennifer Morgue are just two different books. Where the first book was a satire of office culture and adventure mystery novels with a Lovecraftian spin, this one purposely plays a dashing British Spy story straight with the formula, but all the while it taps its nose and winks at you. So yeah, there is still satire here, but it is more of a clever adventure novel that plays with the tried and true stereotypes and cliches.As for this book more specifically, Bob is back! I was actually afraid each book would have a different character, which would made me sad. But he is back and remains the main character. Also back are Pinky and Brains with a more active role. They are hilarious, Q eat your heart out. New to this book is a drop dead gorgeous mysterious woman and a maniacal bad guy. You'll like them, I promise.Given the archetype this book is spoofing, you can count on a lot more scenes of poor Bob having to wing it MacGyver style (with tentacles). When he isn't doing this, he is usually being screwed over by whatever heinous and unmentionable events he's been railroaded into. I mean, he is just some poor cubical rat that gets sent out on dangerous missions occasionally.So while this book has less, or maybe just more subtle, satire and fewer Eldritch horrors, it is a great example of what someone with a creative mind can do with a novel. I recommend it to anyone who liked the first book, and I for one plan on starting the third book before long - maybe tomorrow.

Not that I don't love her more recent stuff--it's wonderful--but if you are looking for an analysis that shows how different theoretical backgrounds can be used to illuminate a field of study from multiple and opposing perspectives that each shed different kinds of light on the topic, this book is a tour de force in that way.

Don't know how I ran across this on Amazon. First was searching for Italian poets then saw this. Just sad. I have a friend who works in the ER and let me tell you - "snuff" films, extreme bondage, and violent sex towards women are real and they DON'T empower women!

All food, he points out, originates with plants, animals and fungi. "[E]ven the deathless Twinkie is constructed out of... well, precisely what I don't know offhand, but ultimately some sort of formerly living creature, i.e., a species. We haven't yet begun to synthesize our foods from petroleum, at least not directly."Pollan's narrative strategy is simple: he traces four meals back to their ur-species. He starts with a McDonald's lunch, which he and his family gobble up in their car. Surprise: the origin of this meal is a cornfield in Iowa. In The Botany of Desire (2001), about how people and plants coevolve, Michael Pollan teased greater issues from speciously small phenomena. The Omnivore's Dilemma exhibits this same gift; a Chicken McNugget, for example, illustrates our consumption of corn and, in turn, agribusiness's oil dependency. In a journey that takes us from an "organic" California chicken farm to Vermont, Pollan asks basic questions about the moral and ecological consequences of our food. Critics agree it's a wake-up call and, written in clear, informative prose, also entertaining. Most found Pollan's quest for his foraged meal the highlight, though the Los Angeles Times faulted Pollan's hypocritical method of "living off the land." Many also voiced a desire for a more concrete vision for the future. But if the book doesn't outline a diet plan, it's nonetheless a loud, convincing call for change.

I'm 13 and as a requirement for my AP Human Geography Class I read this book. I enjoyed the language and style of writing even though it was complicated and slightly hard to understand in some spots. The rich descriptions of landscapes and emotions, took me through a range of feelings and made me confront "the omnivores dilemma" head on. This book is very informative and has helped me understand more about the food system. It has also given me hope that I will be able to see Joel Salatin's dream in my lifetime. I don't feel like there was a clear answer on what an individual could do to help the cause, but I'm sure it's not hard to find on the internet with food being such a popular subject nowadays. I would recommend this book to anybody, not only interested in food but human nature, the relationships between plants, animals, and fungi, government, and an opportunity for a richer, more natural life.

To be or not to be a vegetarian?This is a very interesting book - well thought out and investigated. I am not certain that I want to consume meat again as Pollan tells the reader how these feeder lot cows, pigs and chickens actually live and die. Really, not my idea of humane. Just as interesting is his investigation of corn. It is amazing how corn is in absolutely everything from high-fructose corn syrup to fish food; gasoline to paint; fish to .... well, you get the idea. While more and more acreage is devoted to mono-crops, chiefly corn, we are the "benefactors" of everything that is corn related. Feed lot cattle are fed corn to fatten them up even though it makes them terribly sick and reduces the number of valuable nutrients available to grass fed cows. Multiply that by lamb, chicken, goat, salmon, tilapia, shrimp and you get an idea of why you are eating corn at every meal whether you know it or not. Compound this with the fact that 3 companies control the corn product from seed to pesticide to fertilizer and this monoculture is there to get you in one way or another. Corn that can be sprayed with pesticides that kill everything except the corn - bugs, weeds..... Makes you wonder what you are eating. Anyhow, Pollan has done a wonderful job investigating the food chain and its effect on the environment be it our internal flora or life on earth.

Omnivore's Dilemma was assigned to me in an upper-level economics course, along with other similar books. From the very lengthy list of books, this and Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy were my absolute favorites. To be upfront, this book it is moderate to leftist in its opinions, as is Michael Klare's book, but both books opened my eyes to an entirely new way of thinking about my Economics & Policy degree. Years later, I'm still referencing them in papers & lectures I give. I highly recommend them to people in all disciplines, including casual readers who are just beginning to inform themselves about these topics. Michael Pollan wrote this book in a casual manner, as if sitting around a table with the reader and having a conversation about this great journey he took, yet at the end of the conversation the reader is left with a great amount of knowledge that they can use in countless ways. A great, fun read that I can't imagine anyone not liking. I can't recommend this book more! Happy Readings!!!

Fascinating book. My son sent it to me as a “must read”. He was right! The book takes an in depth look at where our foods come from and the economic, chemical, environmental and social impact of the process. The author takes a long look at the overproduction of corn in this country (who knew?) and how apparently as a result of this government supported process, many animals raised for meat (cows, chickens, pigs) are fed corn as part of a mass production process. This changes the chemical makeup of the meat, results in hormone and antibiotic use, and cruel conditions for the animals, who are raised simply as production units with everything designed to maximize weight gained per unit of corn required to feed them. He goes on to look at what “organic” has come to mean in this country, (not much), and then to work briefly on a farm which really does raise cows, pigs and chickens in fields of grass in a sustainable way. He also discusses vegetarianism, presenting some of the arguments pro and con. From there he decides he will eat meat but needs to experience hunting, so we get his perspective on this, as well as going into forests to gather mushrooms.For me, this was a truly eye-opening and fascinating book. I felt like I learned a lot of things I should have already known and now have much more insight into. Also, his whole approach to food just felt so wholesome as to make me want to move our own lifestyle in that direction, particularly making more effort to buy locally produced food items, even if they cost more. Also, to pay more attention to where the foods we buy come from and think about the carbon footprint of, for example, blueberries flown here by jet from Central or South America. (Why not buy them in summer as preserves or jelly and just not eat them fresh out of season?). So, all in all most highly recommended to be read by everyone!

Great book for the kids to read before we head out to Dollywood this summer. I'm hoping to generate added interest as to who she is as a person thus making the experience more meaningful that just a visit to an amusement park.

I got this to introduce my French students to the legend that is Dolly Parton. They loved it, but I on my side rediscovered the woman. It is suitable and easy to read for any age. On top,it is up to date and deals with the good times as well as the bad times. Inspirational.

This was darling. Dolly Parton is a fabulous human. My girls and I loved reading about her. She is definitely a music genius and prolific song writer. Her philanthropy and passion for children’s literacy is beautiful.Heads up: Ch. 8 talks about her thoughts on gay marriage. Be prepared to talk to small kids about it or skip it.

I'm a life long Dolly Parton fan and love this book. Her story is touching and inspirational so happy to see a bio for kids but it's also an easy fun read for grown ups also. I got this for a Christmas gift for my mom who also loves Dolly. I hope they will make one on Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lalanne and Lucille Ball someday. Marilyn would especially be nice to see.

As a third grade teacher, I love using Who Was/Who Is books in the classroom for independent reading activities. Students love reading about Dolly Parton. As a native Tennessean, I love teaching them about Dolly and all she has done to help her hometown. It proves that one person can make a huge difference. I highly recommend this book!

My kids all love Dolly Parton. They know her from the Imagination Library. My 11 year old wanted to do a report on her so we waited until this book came out. It has lots of fun stories from her childhood that I had never heard. Would recommend it.
