A dear friend gave me this book for my ninth birthday back in 1990. Today, I am a structural engineering associate with a major forensic engineering firm, and I know that much of my fascination with the field began with Salvadori's riveting explanations of the basic principles of structural design. This book is incredible for any kid with any scientific inclination!
++ BOOK FOR A CHILD - This is a very good book for youth. We purchased this for a 11+ year old, and very well received.++ Basic to very basic structural principles explained - a lot of reading with few diagrams for an 11-year-old but the content is well done.++ Experiments are simple and do illustrate the points - e.g., take a piece of string or cardboard and put it between two chairs to illustrate spans, suspension bridge design, etc. Set up a cereal box and blow it over to illustrate wind loads, etc.++ The engineering principles are sound, the explanations are easy enough for youth to understand (I am a design and construction professional, have designed/built buildings for my entire 40-year career).++ Again, keep in mind this is a BOOK BEST SUITED FOR YOUTH in my opinion.
It's a gift for a 10-yr old home-schooler, and haven't presented it yet, but took a quick glance at it; it's all hand-drafted images, with a lot of accompanying text. Somehow I missed some real images of historic/classic examples of structures (as shown on the cover page, almost as a teaser), which would 'tie' the subject even more to the references mentioned in the text. As mentioned, this is a kind of tongue in cheek for a little girl who expresses an interest in not only constructing/building, but also Architecture. Being an Architect, I searched quite a bit before landing upon this book to consider as a gift, as I figured it can sit patiently on the shelf in the years to come, until that desire to learn 'kicks in' and she'll start devouring it (I hope), in the same way the home-schooling system promotes motivation.
I had no idea this was a kid's book, but had a great time reading it, admiring Salvadori's solid examples and projects, illustrations and thoroughness. It *looks* like an adult book, but it's geared to high school or maybe jr. high. He must have been a wonderful instructor. I considered dropping a star for a misleading cover illustration and description, but finally accepted that it was my own fault! It is exactly what it should be for the intended audience. It makes me wish I had read it 40 years ago.
Owning a design - build custom homes and light commercial contracting business, also providing land planning and development, and involved in real estate, this book certainly helps my 17 year old high school student to get a foot in the doors, and be advanced as we move along with his plans to be a part of our company, and one day being the CEO.My son loves and does very well at art, having won some art show competitions where adults were also competing, it is good that I can show him, partially through this book that he can apply his love of art to the business of designing and building.For the same reasons, I also bought 3 others - 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School - Business School - Engineering School .
Not what I was hoping for to help my kids learn to build things...maybe good for some people but my kiddos glanced through it and put it aside. This seems a bit wordy and crowded and not appealing to look at but that differs greatly from person to person.
I purchased this book for my 10 year old son who wants to be an engineer or architect. This book is a fabulous introduction to the principles of architecture/engineering. It includes both principles and hands on projects to demonstrate the principles. What a great way to get (or keep) children interested in math/science. I highly recommend it!
I purchased this book for my father since he is very much into books with a wealth of knowledge and also because he is expanding his book collection for his library. He enjoyed reading this book.
