- Excerpt from my review and discussion on:The fast paced writing is what kept me on for the long haul but it was also nice to have a book that was good and happened to have a gay lead character, as opposed to badly written ones which you knew was published for the mere fact that it had gay characters. This also made the book special because it took me quite a few books to get to this one. Some of the other ones I tried were Michael Griffo’s Archangel Academy series, James Crawford’s Caleo, James Erich’s Dreams. Though I appreciated aspects of each of those books, they just didn’t do it for me. I felt short changed in two of the series and the other on was so boring, I gave up (even though I had spent a pretty penny ordering the hardback versions).
I discovered this series two days ago, and COULDN'T STOP. I love and hated this series (very Game-of-Thrones-conflicting-emotions type stuff), but none of the books disappoint. Genuinely sad there are only three books in the series, but definitely worth the read!

By the end of the book, I knew who I wanted to claim victory over the trials...I just didn't know who I could let lose.Steven Dos Santos' debut novel kept me guessing, hoping, and frantically turning pages well into the night. I put it down quicker as I approached the end, not wanting it to end--not wanting to lose any of the characters that I had grown to love, and admire so deeply. To say I'm anticipating book two in the Torch Keepers series is an understatement--I absolutely cannot wait to see how Lucky and Cole's life changes, as the next stage of their journey begins.
Wow. I was barely able to put this book down. After the first few pages I was completely hooked. It's entertaining, and incredibly disturbing all at once. The way that Dos Santos unfolded the Establishments sick and twisted game of recruiting teenagers into their elite military force left me breathless. The idea of taking two loved ones as incentives that you would have to eventually choose which lives and which dies (and How) if you fail a trial blew my mind. Who would your incentives be? how would you choose? Dos Santos created in depth back sorties on every recruit making you root for each character to advance in the trials. The hint of a love story between Lucky and Digory filled my heart and made it sink into my chest at the same time. Knowing that only one recruit can be the winner, I was in agony wondering which of the recruits would make it through and who would be "Shelved". This is a page turner. If this was merely a good read, I would have given it 4 stars, but they say great art leaves you changed after you experience it... and this book definitely did that. Steven Dos Santos has, with one amazing work, propelled himself onto my top shelf.Without spoiling, I will tell you that once you get to Part III, I'd grab a box of tissues...you'll need them.Amazon, when can I preorder book 2???
I picked up this book with the idea that the central focus would revolve around a gay hidden love affair between two gay lovers. Boy was I wrong! The mere fact that the main characters happen to be gay is really not a central key point of the book. Lucian is a loving character who has been left with the task of taking care of his little brother at all costs. Characters in this novel are stripped of their humanity and are forced to live life in fear. I was pleasantly surprised to see the character development of the recruits that were pitted against each other to save their incentives. Each one had a backstory that really made you feel for them and made it very difficult to decipher which recruit to side with. The attraction that Lucian and Diggory had towards each other kept me at the edge of my feet. Steven Dos Santos cleverly placed intimate moments between both characters that were unforgettable and only gave you just a taste of what could happen, only wanting you to continue reading to see what becomes of their relationship. The book was very easy to read and I literally did not want to put the book down as soon as I started reading it. I felt so much for these characters that at times I laughed for their triumphs and got teary eyed at some of the ghastly decisions that they were forced to make by the Establishment, their corrupt government. It's a must read for teens and adults alike. I can't wait till the second book is released!
