This book blew me away. I went in with high expectations, and it exceeded all of them. Of course the cover drew me in. I have a soft spot for anything with a deer on it. I was standing in the book section while grocery shopping and I read the first two pages. I immediately went home and bought it on Amazon (okay, I'm a cheapskate; sue me).Also, a detail that was a MAJOR PLUS for me (and the reason I went home and bought the book after only reading two pages), the main character is missing one breast. She doesn't have a small, "cool/mysterious/sex-appeal" scar, she has a REAL scar, with actual scar tissue, and which she is self-conscious about. It's hard to put into words why that was so meaningful to me. Her scars and her past were part of who she was. At NO point did the book imply she was ugly because she was scarred, but it also meant I (the reader) was not inundated with the types of descriptions like "flawless smooth porcelain skin" because honestly how many physically flawless heroines do we need? Flaws are what make us human, and not all scars are "pretty." I don't need to think about that one cluster of acne scars on my chest every time an author beats me over the head with how their perfect MC doesn't have so much as a blemish.That was a bit of a side rant.This was a good book if you like dark fantasy and romance. It had a powerful plot that revolved around hunting the stag. The whole time I kept thinking to myself "I know exactly where this is going and it's going to be AWESOME" and then the ending took me completely be surprise and it was even more awesome than I could have imagined.I'd probably recommend this especially to fans of Leigh Bardugo even though (don't come after me) I thought the writing in WHITE STAG was even better than what I've read of Bardugo's books.

Actual rating: 3.5I’m very thankful that the Author’s Note was the first part of this book. Janneke is a strong, willful and tough as nails character but she has a lot of trauma. It’s impirtant to know if you can read her trauma without striking at your own in harmful ways.For me, this was an uncomfortable read. I’m particular the first 80 pages had me deeply struggling with who Janneke’s love interest is. I was not comfortable with the power dynamics between them.Those power dynamics shift. Without spoilers, I’ll promise you that. But. This relationship was deeply upsetting to me for the first 1/3 of the book and never really shed that initial feeling.Okay romance aside, where WHITE STAG wins is in its exploration of the monster and the monstrous. Here, everything is grey. And looking at what makes us monstrous and what makes a monster human is compelling.If you’re reading for romance and can’t handle power imbalances, then WHITE STAG is not for you. If you can handle this and want to explore the monstrous, then give WHITE STAG a try.Barbieri wrote this as a teenager and while it’s been revised since, I’m excited to see where her talent develops in future projects.

Any book that reference Der Erlkönig from the offset is a book that I am going to love. It's a rule. I didn't make the rule, I just follow it as one generally should with oddly specific rules probably made up by fairies.Speaking of fairies, WHITE STAG is the latest in a YA fantasy (and adult fantasy, for that matter) tradition that I just cannot get enough of: scary fairies! Most recognizable in the works of authors like Holly Black and Melissa Marr, the scary fairies trend has seen a spate of new authors in recent years (S. Jae-Jones, Melissa Albert, Margaret Rogerson, etc.) and I honestly couldn't be happier to see so many books connecting with the creepy side of the fair folk. White Stage definitely didn't let me down in that arena either!Janneke has spend decades in the service of her goblin master, Soren. A service, reluctantly (if not out right unwillingly) rendered, that has a terrible cost. Janneke has proven to the Permafrost -the brutal but beautiful home of the goblins - that she is goblin material, and slowly her humanity is being stripped from her. To make things more complicated, the Goblin King has just bit the dust, and an ancient ritual hunt to determine the new king is about to drag her and her master into unspeakable danger.(Someone get this girl a shock blanket, please. Because that's a lot to handle all at once.)What appealed to me the most about White Stag, aside form Barbieri's beautiful, Scandinavian-influenced world building, was the complexity of her many characters. They were very... well they weren't technically human, but when I say they were human what I mean to say is that they had fascinating depth. Janneke is torn on so many levels - ever since she was a child she's had to deal with a complex identity even she struggled to understand, tasked as she was with playing the boy and being her father's heir. Loving the hunting and the freedom, but sometimes just wanting to do the things the girls go to do, rather than existing as an uncomfortable outlier in her community. Now, to face that fact that, after the crushing loss of her family in a goblin raid and her own torture and rape at the hands of an insane, sadistic goblin lord, she is losing the last of her humanity, and thus her last connection to her old life. She is becoming what she despises. Watching her try to navigate that reality was so painful, but still so captivating.Honestly, don't miss this book. There are definitely some content warnings for remembered sexual violence, and a fair amount of gore, but if you like dark fantasy it's nothing you won't have encountered before. And everything, from the books scarred heroine, to the violet-eyed, white haired goblin master Soren (tell me he wasn't inspired by Drizzt, I am so happy), to the wild, sweeping world of the Permafrost makes for excellent reading. At it's heart White Stag is a book about, not so much what it means to be "human", as what it means to have humanity. To be and find goodness and light in the darkness.Plus that tiny cliffhanger epilogue has got me absolutely mad for a sequel.

I enjoy authors first book. My 8th grade granddaughter has enjoyed the fantasy books (Hobbit, the CS Lewis books), after reading a review of White Stag, I thought this would be a new series for her. After the book came and I was reading the author's prologue, the graphic and explicit areas of the book are not appropriate for young adults. The author wrote that some of the book is so 'heavy' that if it bothered the reader, they should just quit reading. I desire that this author be successful and learn to write not just getting 'things off of her chest' but to tell the story without the explicit deals that effect developing teens.

Thus the production of this book on books is carefully and thoughtfully done.The book reviews are well written and thorough, and the Reader will be pleased to find excellent reproductions of select prints from these important books in color.This reader, knowledgeable on this subject, saw reproductions in this book that are from books he has only read about but not seen. This is not the book for one who merely seeks to understand how the thing was constructed, although some of that is here. It is for the person who desires to know every conceivable artistic, religious, patriotic, and economic inspiration for this French driven project.The author, who is a European scholastic, has a deep understanding of the meanings of a multitude of pagan, Greek, Roman, Egyptian gods and other hangers-on of antiquity. (Thank God we no longer need to know all these stories to be considered literate.) Her book dives into these meanings in its first several chapters; afterwards the pace quickens and the story line is easier to follow.If you want to know how it came to be that the Statue of Liberty was located at the entrance of New York City; how it was financed; what symbols are embedded in it; what other giant statues were its predecessors; why the materials to build it are important; and the commercial backdrop in both France and the USA--this is the book for you. There is probably no finer on these aspects of the subject.One quarrel: I do think the contemporary liberal politics of Dr. Viano take over when she arrives at her Epilogue. For example, I do not agree with her assessment of a Ronald Reagan speech at the site of the Statue of Liberty. "The statue had a new identity: green and gold, she was the icon of capitalism, free enterprise, an of the elevation of the freedom of employers over the rights of employees." She also ends, somewhat clunkily to my thinking, by choosing to quote the liberal political comedian Jon Stewart about the statute after 9/11.

I'm 200 pages in and know nothing more about the Statue of Liberty than I did when I started. Lots of obscure politics, philosophy, and religion from France in the late 1800's, but little of interest. I will never finish this.

This brilliant book opens up the history of the statue of liberty like never before. Thoughtful, original and scholarly, this book not only taught me an enormous amount; it changed my vision of American history and entertained me thoroughly. This is on my must-read list.

The mainstream medical community, especially in the United States, considers Parkinson’s disease to be incurable. The disease involves a steady, irreversible loss of brain cells that generate the neurotransmitter dopamine. Drugs and medical treatments, including brain surgery, can alleviate and slow the symptoms, but they cannot stop or cure the disease.In stark contrast, Howard Shifke – the author of this book – completely cured himself of Parkinson’s over a nine-month period by following what he calls a Recipe, concocted largely from Chinese medical principles without using any medications. This book is the fascinating story of his recovery, and the recovery of others over the years afterwards, using his Recipe.The Recipe involves a physical portion and emotional and spiritual portions. The physical portion, aims at healing body parts typically weakened by Parkinson’s according to Chinese medicine: the liver, the kidneys, the blood, and the feet. The techniques of Qi Gong, sound healing, and Yin Tui Na (acupressure) apply here. For the emotional and spiritual factors, he applies meditation and psychotherapy techniques. For instance, stress is a possible cause of Parkinson’s and a factor in recovery, and unnecessary stress is often a result of worrying about things over which one has little control. Shifke’s psychotherapeutic tool for such situations is to just say "okay, that’s the way it is, and I’m not going to fret about it" (page 66). For example, a thunderstorm breaks just as you were about to take the dry laundry off the line; "okay."With only a bit of tweaking later, the whole Recipe was created by Shifke in only one week after his diagnosis. This same Recipe has cured six people (five besides Shifke) so far. I believe this Recipe is an amazing feat of creativity and insight given the slow pace of medical research in general.A commitment to the Recipe isn’t to be taken lightly, however. Although it is broken up to keep interest high, the total time commitment is over an hour per day, seven days a week for months or years. Clearly, a victim of Parkinson’s would need a great amount of fortitude to pursue this cure.The book is designed as an easy cover-to-cover read, but this makes it difficult to find particular topics later. For example, if you want to know what Shifke has to say about "okay," the gallbladder, or Tai Chi, you may have difficulty. The book is organized into front matter, three parts, and two appendices. There are no chapters, no index, very few headings, and the running heads are weak. In place of an index, you could buy the Kindle Edition and use Kindle’s search function.After a very short Introduction outlining Shifke’s life before he was diagnosed, Part One describes his life during the nine months while he had Parkinson’s; if you have any doubt whether he had a real case of the disease, read this part. Part Two is the meat of the book. It covers the Recipe in detail, especially the emotional and spiritual portions of the Recipe (the physical portion, being more straightforward, is covered in Appendix Two). Part Three covers his life from recovery until the book was written – seven plus years. The most interesting portions of this part for me were the stories of the five known other people who were cured over this period; see pages 131, 133, 148, 163, and 185. Appendix One is a daily journal that Howard kept in great detail for the initial portion of his recovery; he ended the journal after a month and a half as his handwriting became so poor (due to Parkinson’s) that even he could not read it. Finally, Appendix Two presents the physical portion of the Recipe in detail. However, some of the exercises were hard for me to follow because there are no diagrams to illustrate the Qi Gong motions. Fortunately the same material appears in his website (I can't give it here, but Google on "Howard Shifke") with videos of the more complex movements.If you have anything to do with Parkinson’s, this is a must-read book. If your reading time is limited and you have the disease, read at least Parts One and Two, Appendix Two, and page 175; then balance the probability of recovery and the time commitment against the outcome if you do nothing. If you decide to move forward with the Recipe, both the patient and caretaker should read the whole book and get the Kindle Edition for an index. If you are related to or are the caretaker of a Parkinson’s patient, read at least Part One. And if you are a medical provider, Part Two will probably provide the greatest value.Although there are a few individual, poorly substantiated claims of curing Parkinson’s, this is the only one I know of that has cured multiple identified individuals of this “incurable” disease. We owe Howard a great deal of gratitude for his generosity in sharing his Recipe with us here and on his extensive website (see above). His Recipe is likely to be the best cure available over the next decade.

This book takes a close look at the logical reasons and replicable steps that may lay behind “miraculous healings” that medical science has been, perhaps, too quick to dismiss as flukes.Howard’s ‘’miraculous recovery” from an un-recoverable illness, cannot be so miraculous since he has been able to replicate it with 5 other people who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Within the pages of his book he unravels the mysteries of “faith healing” based on his own experience.Howard’s description of having PD and what it is like matches closely enough to my husband and the other’s who have this disease that I have come to know through running a support group for people with PD based on alternative medicine for many years. I have no doubt that he knows what it feels like from inside his skin, along with the diagnosis he received from a well respected neurologist who also treated his mother for 24 years.His description of the thought patterns that contribute to PD holds true to well known descriptions of a Parkinson’s personality that is driven, perfectionist, stoic, and runs on adrenalin and fear to accomplish everyday challenges. The way he struggles to change those thought patterns is well described, and, in my view, holds the key to understanding and unraveling this horrific disease that our western medications and surgery can only hope to ‘relieve’ symptoms, and (sadly) cause many others.The story of how he dealt with changing the outcome of his life is a story of transformation. It is a powerful metaphor for how we all can transform the world we find ourselves in to a world that works better, like nature intended, to be self-healing.His descriptions of the healing process he went through took faith that each day, no matter what his symptoms felt like, he was healing from the inside out. Faith above those who doubted it could be done, which is what ALL of us are taught: Parkinson’s is unrecoverable. It is clearly not that. He has recovered from the unrecoverable disease by healing the deep wounds to his soul. It took unshakeable faith.I would recommend this book to anyone who has this diagnosis, their loved ones, and all the care providers who want to help those who suffer from it. Especially physicians and neurologists!!!!!!There are more than glimmers in the scientific community that consciousness and energy patterns hold the key to our existence and reality. It is most unfortunate that our medical providers are only allowed to prescribe medicine that was conceived in a scientific view that is more appropriate to repairing a car or machine. There is much wisdom in the ancient healing arts that has been lost to the west for the last 500 years. This book can help provide a way back to help us all reclaim healthy patterns that serve us well.We can all celebrate Howard’s incredible victory over Parkinson’s disease and learn from the habits of mind that made the difference. His soul was what was healed in order to heal his body. And, fortunately, his soul is inter-dimensional and connected to each of us and the universe. Most hopefully, his success at healing is a harbinger for the changes we all can choose to make to help the earth and its inhabitants heal.Howard found room in his heart for the positive emotions of compassion, forgiveness, love, peace joy and happiness, by bailing out the fear and negative thoughts, self-doubt and self-criticism. Step-by-step, Howard carefully and thoroughly explains everything he did so that anyone can duplicate his method. His writings show human warmth by sharing his feelings, struggles, and success. Howard's gives the reader the human interest by telling about himself, his life and family, and how his wife and his children have all supported his efforts. Howard explains the body, mind, and spirit connection that is crucial to overcoming this health disaster. Howard and other people who used Howard's recipe continue to enjoy ongoing success and health since they overcome this disease. Years later, Howard and people who copied Howard's ways remain symptom-free from Parkinson's symptoms. Howard also has an interesting and informative blog for those of us who have been impacted by Parkinson's disease. This most welcomed blog is called, "Fighting Parkinson's Drug Free". The members participate by reading his highly intelligent and thought out writings and we interact with each other in a deeply supportive and caring manner. My spouse was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. I find that I have received much-needed help from both the book and the blog. Before I found Howard Shifke's website, "Fighting Parkinson's Drug free", I felt alone in dealing with my spouse's disease. I now feel like I have proper and adequate support. I no longer feel isolated and helpless. This is the solution. I thank Howard for sharing this most needed information. I passed my RBT exam!My company uses this book for the ABA therapists to be RBT certified.This covers all areas you need to know in the exam and the examples with pictures absolutely help!In the training, there were 5 therapists using this book and I heard all of them passed.We had a great trainer and an amazing book!The trainer told us this book is also good for BCBA exam. I'm far behind it and I don't want to think about it yet.Now I'm just celebrating passing the RBT exam!

I really like how it has a lot of pictures to describe the ABA terms. I'm taking BCBA exam soon and this book is helping me understand the ones that I wasn't clear. I'm glad it's not too expensive so I can recommend it to my friends.

I was pleasantly suprised by the quality of this book. The chapters are logically organized and provide a bounty of tables, charts and diaghrams. Chapters are generally arranged by individual system components including intake, headrace channel, penstock, electromechanical equipment, powerhouse building, tailrace channel and commissioning & staff training, among others. Each chapter consists of an introduction to the component, design discussion, construction procedures and technical specifications relating to the specific component. Example calculations are included as appropriate. Overall, this was a very good book.

Clearly written, the book goes into a great detail about site evaluation, hydraulics and the civil works associated with small hydro like the intake, penstock, powerhouse building, etc. Many diagrams and examples.

Great book, a little heady for me. Very technical.

Turned out to be more useful that i was expecting! Really helping me design and build my own 600w kaplan system

Good read if you're planning to build a microhydro or picohydro system.
