This book has a lot of good information in it, I have learned about the different ways cultures prepare foods and what influenced the way they eat.I wish there were more pictures and recipes in the book, but there is a lot of good reading.I would recommend this to any culinary or nutrition student and those interested in learning about different cultures.

My daughter needed this book for her college course. I was surprised that this book costs upwards of $90.00. There was no way I going to pay that. I was happy to find this book on the cheap. For a used book, it was in good condition when we received it.

While comprehensive, this is too broad, too general and very stereotypical. Each 'cultural' group represented in the United States has the same diet as their fellows, it seems. It can also be very bland: since coming to the U.S., X group's consumption of 'junk' food, milk, and such, has increased.There are also some serious mistakes. Scotch is the alcoholic drink while Scottish refers to the people. Yet, the authors insist on calling a particular people the "Scotch Irish" (a group not recognized in Europe).Should you want very general information, without consulting specialist sources, this might be adequate for your purposes, but if it is to be used in, say, a course introducing topics of food and culture, this is not the book to use.

I bought this book as I am studying to become a Nutrition Assistant, one of the possible job requirements is to educate people of various ethnicities re: their food and possible changes. Some of the sections on the history of the country and people were fairly dense to read. Some of the focus on food was somewhat repetitive, although I did find a few surprises. This book will probably be more useful for me if I do start counseling people.

I received this book in the mail today and immediately sat down and devoured it, cover to cover. So good like potato chips, the recipes and the writing, I didn't want to put it down. I was a recipe tester so I've already made and enjoyed some of the things in here and there are several more I'm excited to make after reading through the recipes. As a family with a year-round CSA, I really appreciate the greens and root veg love. This is a cookbook similar to how we like to cook and eat, simple and satisfying, yes with our hands, big and small plates, with little waste and embracing the oddball veg out there. Cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, and turnips finally get their turn to shine. I've been reading Alana's blog for a while so I knew I'd like the book but I was surprised by how much I really loved it instead.

Fantastic vegetarian cookbook..filled with satiating dishes that you can feed to guests that are not vegetarian. The Poblano Rajas Tacos are addictive and the Cucumber Shiso soba is almost a shock for how good it is. The flavors seem familiar but put together create a new flavor that is a happy surprise for your mouth. You can make it ahead of time and gets better the longer it sits in the refrigerator (like a marinade works).Beautifully photographed recipes to peak your interest and give you a clear idea of what it should look like in the end.There is also a useful section on how to wash, store, and make your vegi's last.

I have every cookbook Chernila has written and love her blog, too. This book is full of vegetable gems and has been sitting on my kitchen counter in constant use since it arrived.

Recipes aside, I could read Alana’s cookbooks all day long. They are warm and inviting, as if we are just two friends sharing our favorite memories and recipes. And the recipes! I can’t decide what to cook first, but I am fired up to add both turnips and radishes to my repertoire!

Beautiful!! Love all of her cookbooks. Makes me so happy to see this addition on my cookbook shelf! Wish there were more pictures of recipes though.

A strong contrast between Jalil’s goodness and oppressors’ cold and clinical approach to life results in a fascinating read.I find The Test disturbing and though-provoking, but also predictable. I decided to buy this book because I fully enjoyed his Themis Files series. The Test did not disappoint. It sucked me in from the first page, and I only stopped briefly because my clothes were done at the laundromat, and it was time to go home.

Completely unlike Sleeping Giants...not at all what I was expecting...I am very glad I read it, but I cannot say that I ENJOYED it, it was very intense and really has me thinking about the future of humanity, because I can, unfortunately, TOTALLY see us (as a species) doing this...

Great story, neat plot, well written. You expect certain parts and then the third act surprised me. I just wish it was longer.

To me, this was a fascinating and thought provoking work. It not only provides insight into the life and thought of the two historical figures but also provides vivid context and reflection on the meaning of what they did. A triumph of thorough research and excellent writing.

I greatly enjoyed this book. While there have been complaints about a lack of example calculations and discussion of details of how it was done, there is enough in here for someone familiar with this type of work to figure it out. And if you don't know this material, you may not want to be faced with the math (believe me)!The discussion on the repeating 'theodolite' was great, as were the trials and tribulations of triangulation. If you've ever measured angles on a mountain top, you'll know just what the author is getting at. A great achievement for an historian, who, we presume, may not have done this kind of work.There are two other really good parts of this book. The first is the discussion on the search for a 'universal' system of measurement. It places the metric system in a context, not as the be-all and end-all, but as a serious effort to solve a serious set of problems. The discussion of the 'error' is fascinating. This part hasn't changed in nature, just the current details.The second is the analysis of the personalities of the two central characters. Alder does bring them to life. Having worked in Antarctica for a year and seen people dealing with the stress of isolation, the story was very real to me: I almost knew those guys, albeit in different times and guises. And the stress was real: these guys ran the risks of close encounters with Madame Guillotine, wars, disease, politics, the works. This was quite apart from the normal risks of the job, such as falling off cliffs and towers, exposure, unhappy locals, etc. Thank heavens for GPS, a technology that is possible only because of the foundation work of geodesists like Mechain and Delambre.Enjoy this book, as a history of measurement and geodesy, a history of a major surveying achievement, and a vivid study of personalities under real stress.

Scholarly work showing the evolution of the SI system. I was only vaguely aware of how the meter was defined so this was quite interesting. Even more interesting was the effort of some to introduce decimal time with 10 day weeks, 100 minute hours with 100 seconds,etc, and that France actually used this system for several years. In the meantime, I marvel at the continued use of the British units in the US despite how ill equipped it is to do anything efficiently. Change is indeed very hard.

Great book about the development of the metric system which was adopted in France in the late 1700's. It is now implemented and used worldwide except in the USA and some other minor countries. Too bad Thomas Jefferson didn't see the light.

At the time of the French Revolution the first metric system was already 5000 year old.Let me explain. Ancient Sumeria used a system of measurement based on the length of a pendulum whose period was based on the rotation of the Earth relative to the sun. This period of 1/360 parts of a solar day could not be changed by King or commoner. This made it the first universal standard based on properties of the whole Earth. This standard, and its cousins which made use of the stars then the planet Venus to time the rotation of the earth could be easily be reproduced world wide and spread to China and Japan in the East and to Britain in the West. There is even some evidence that it spread to the new world well before the common era.Mr Alder has written a compelling saga of the attempt to measure the circumference of the Earth in French revolutionary times, He fails to mention that this measurement had been made before the construction of the Great Pyramid and had been refined in the first millennium BCE achieving an accuracy of better than 0.05 percent.While these facts may have not been known to the French Academy of Science at the time and were thus not central to the story they do indicate that the search for a Universal Standard of Measurement was an age old endeavor and that the earth itself was the measure of that standard.

The next stage of Balance Benders. Yes, my twelve-year-old loves BB but he regrets the migration to algebra (which was the whole point of my starting him on the series about two years ago.) He's almost intuitive on the BB problems and has left me in the dust in solving them (I can work them through but not at the speed he does.) In any case, he's taking Algebra this year, so time to move on.

Fantastic book for introducing the concepts of Algebraic equations. Takes a step-by-step approach, with gradually increasing complexity, at just the right pace. The graphic "balances" establish a much more intuitive understanding of how equations work, as opposed to just putting x's and y's on a paper, which is much more abstract.

Not as great as the regular balance math books, but provides some interesting connections to more formal algebra.

This book has been great! My fourth grader loves it and I think it’s a challenge to brush up on math. My sixth grader is also warming up to it.

We received Balance Math Teaches Algebra, and my son eagerly started going through it with his dad. His father, 'who is a science and math geek, felt that the book was very effective in how it used pictures to demonstrate the algebraic equations, rules, and concepts. The first section of the exercise book graphically demonstrates the basic rules of balancing equations (through step by step problems), then the subsequent pages move in a logical sequence from the simple to more complex problems. He felt this book could be used on a 1-2 exercises per week basis for a few months, or as a good substitution for a regular curriculum if you have a student who is stuck in a rut and needs help out. It would also be great for a creative learner, such as an unschooler, or for a younger student who wants to learn ahead of "schedule", or as a gradual and intriguing introduction before jumping into the meatier concepts in most Algebra curricula. The book is a total of 62 pages long (answers included).Our son enjoyed working through the problems and was able to do them with minimal involvement on my part. He looked at the problems as more "fun" than "work" and I "caught" him several times working on the Balance Math book instead of another subject that had been assigned (we are homeschoolers). It's hard to get mad when they are so caught up in a book they don't want to quit!The only drawback to these books is that if you, the teacher, do not understand the concepts yourself, you will need to get your own copy and work through it before offering it to your student (or you will have to hope that someone else in your family "gets" Algebra, so they can help if your student gets stuck.) There is no teacher's manual, and the answers are just answers, not explanations.I think that my son's simple words from the other day, "Mom, I really love this book. Can we get more?" say it all. If you can find that a product that incites your student to pursue knowledge and to get excited about learning, something that both challenges them and pleases them, then why would you even consider saying, "No"?

By using various shapes to represent unknowns, students have the opportunity to visualize the problem without being distracted by letters and numbers.The balance scale concept is used throughout the book, but types of exercises are varied. These include matching, picking pairs, and solving. Additionally, students are guided through a series of equations to arrive at a final answer and then fill in a proof to explain how they arrived at their answer. Students also use the balance scale concept to solve algebraic word problems. The book starts out with simple equations and slowly progresses into the more complex.Balance Math Teaches Algebra makes the subject of algebra less intimidating for young students. There are only a few problems per page and the printing is done in black and white with no clutter to distract the student. After learning with Balance Math Teaches Algebra, my 11 year old is no longer scared of Algebra.A tip sheet explaining and demonstrating algebraic concepts on a balance scale is included for student reference.

My daughter just flew through Algebra 1, and I used this product as a way to keep her algebra skills sharp while she takes Geometry. Nearly all of the problems can be solved mathematically using the basic associative and commutative properties. They can also be solved with basic logic/thinking skills. My daughter thinks of them as thinking challenges more than math problems. Whatever she calls them, I'm thrilled to find a product that keeps her thinking about algebraic concepts and solving multiple equations simultaneously.
