The next stage of Balance Benders. Yes, my twelve-year-old loves BB but he regrets the migration to algebra (which was the whole point of my starting him on the series about two years ago.) He's almost intuitive on the BB problems and has left me in the dust in solving them (I can work them through but not at the speed he does.) In any case, he's taking Algebra this year, so time to move on.

Fantastic book for introducing the concepts of Algebraic equations. Takes a step-by-step approach, with gradually increasing complexity, at just the right pace. The graphic "balances" establish a much more intuitive understanding of how equations work, as opposed to just putting x's and y's on a paper, which is much more abstract.

Not as great as the regular balance math books, but provides some interesting connections to more formal algebra.

This book has been great! My fourth grader loves it and I think it’s a challenge to brush up on math. My sixth grader is also warming up to it.

We received Balance Math Teaches Algebra, and my son eagerly started going through it with his dad. His father, 'who is a science and math geek, felt that the book was very effective in how it used pictures to demonstrate the algebraic equations, rules, and concepts. The first section of the exercise book graphically demonstrates the basic rules of balancing equations (through step by step problems), then the subsequent pages move in a logical sequence from the simple to more complex problems. He felt this book could be used on a 1-2 exercises per week basis for a few months, or as a good substitution for a regular curriculum if you have a student who is stuck in a rut and needs help out. It would also be great for a creative learner, such as an unschooler, or for a younger student who wants to learn ahead of "schedule", or as a gradual and intriguing introduction before jumping into the meatier concepts in most Algebra curricula. The book is a total of 62 pages long (answers included).Our son enjoyed working through the problems and was able to do them with minimal involvement on my part. He looked at the problems as more "fun" than "work" and I "caught" him several times working on the Balance Math book instead of another subject that had been assigned (we are homeschoolers). It's hard to get mad when they are so caught up in a book they don't want to quit!The only drawback to these books is that if you, the teacher, do not understand the concepts yourself, you will need to get your own copy and work through it before offering it to your student (or you will have to hope that someone else in your family "gets" Algebra, so they can help if your student gets stuck.) There is no teacher's manual, and the answers are just answers, not explanations.I think that my son's simple words from the other day, "Mom, I really love this book. Can we get more?" say it all. If you can find that a product that incites your student to pursue knowledge and to get excited about learning, something that both challenges them and pleases them, then why would you even consider saying, "No"?

By using various shapes to represent unknowns, students have the opportunity to visualize the problem without being distracted by letters and numbers.The balance scale concept is used throughout the book, but types of exercises are varied. These include matching, picking pairs, and solving. Additionally, students are guided through a series of equations to arrive at a final answer and then fill in a proof to explain how they arrived at their answer. Students also use the balance scale concept to solve algebraic word problems. The book starts out with simple equations and slowly progresses into the more complex.Balance Math Teaches Algebra makes the subject of algebra less intimidating for young students. There are only a few problems per page and the printing is done in black and white with no clutter to distract the student. After learning with Balance Math Teaches Algebra, my 11 year old is no longer scared of Algebra.A tip sheet explaining and demonstrating algebraic concepts on a balance scale is included for student reference.

My daughter just flew through Algebra 1, and I used this product as a way to keep her algebra skills sharp while she takes Geometry. Nearly all of the problems can be solved mathematically using the basic associative and commutative properties. They can also be solved with basic logic/thinking skills. My daughter thinks of them as thinking challenges more than math problems. Whatever she calls them, I'm thrilled to find a product that keeps her thinking about algebraic concepts and solving multiple equations simultaneously.

As an older woman, Gabrielle Douglas story inspires and deeply touches me. I remember watching her with such rapt attention and admiration during the summer Olympics and reminiscing how nearly 20 years earlier, I watched Dominique Dawes with the same feelings. Amazing! Nearly two years later, I tune in to watch the Lifetime biopic and my eyes start to tear up as before the opening. Teary-eyed and proud, I made it through the biopic. And now, with her memoir, I am awarded the opportunity to dive deeper into her story. Fortunately, I read her memoir on my Kindle so my tears did not cause any damage. This is an truly inspirational story. It saddens me that young minority women have to endure any form of racism but as I think about it the Civil Rights Movement occurred in 1960s after 200 years of slavery and a systemized form of oppression. A lot of prejudice and racial bias is still buried deep. Alas, what does not kill you makes you stronger. I am glad that Gabrielle is receiving all the accolades as it is well deserved. I hope her story continues to inspire minority girls to enroll in gymnastics and I hope they pay special attention on the backlash Gabby receives and how well she handles it.

My husband bought this book for our daughter for Christmas. Our daughter has done competitive gymnastics since age 6 and is now 11 years old. A lot of hours, intense training and effort goes into this sport and the fact that our daughter misses out on a lot of things that other kids her age gets to do comes up sometimes. This book is a great read and realization for anyone considering the sport or currently in gymnastics that will open the eyes to the fact that the road to success is not always easy, but as the great Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

Aside from them, readers also get a look into her family life. As a single mother, Douglas's mother works hard to support her daughter's dream, financially and mentally. Also included is a brief look at Gabby's father, who has been absent for much of her life.This is an inspirational novel. Everyone saw Gabby's performance at the Olympics, but in this novel, readers get a glimpse of the real Gabby Douglas: an American teenager who happens to enjoy gymnastics. One thing that I enjoyed about this novel was that it sounds like a teenager wrote it. Normally, this would usually be a bad thing, but in this case, it's not. After all, Gabby Douglas is a teenager, and it made the novel much more personal.I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys the Olympics, gymnastics, or just loves a great story!

This book is a story of triumph over adversity, and how even a little girl in a disadvantaged home can have a big dream come true. Gabrielle is mature far beyond her years (she had to be), and still she is a little girl with big dreams and a love for fun. The book just keeps surprising as she faces one set-back after another. Just when it looks like she can't miss--her own problem with home sickness nearly does her in. She has a wonderful support team that helps her pull through. Her mother and her siblings just keeps giving her the inspiration to reach higher and higher. It seems like a novel, and yet it is real-life, and big dreams do come true. This book will inspire a lot of little girls to "go for the gold". And, if they have Gabrielle's faith...they can.

I think she is a great leader to the next generation of gymnasts. It's not an easy sport. Having people to look up to is a big deal. Gymnastics hold some of my BEST childhood memories and a few of the most crazy ones too. It's more of a mentally-tough spiritual path than just a sport. She has put a little of the meaningfulness inside the secret-planet sort-of world of a tumbler into words anyone can journey there with.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book - it was truly inspirational and something that any age group can learn from. This young lady is very grounded, which shows me that both her families worked as one to keep her focused and on the right track. All the people in her life regardless of the circumstances played a role, some more so than others, but the end result is fantastic. I believe there is much more for this teen as she keeps her eyes focused on her faith and truly revel in the unconditional love of both her families.

I got this book last year and I read it in a few day. It was such a great story about who Gabrielle Douglas was and what her journey was like. It really gives the reader inside look at her life. She is a colorful, expressive writer which makes it a pleasure to read. There are some great pictures inside the book as well and the book cover itself on the back is a poster of her. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants an inspiring read!

Excellent book! Purchased for my 9 year old who loves Gabby Douglas but ended up reading it myself all in one day before she could even start it. Amazing book that gives you a behind the scenes picture of what life was like for Gabby growing up and how hard she had to fight to get to where she is now.

As I've stated in other reviews, it's hard not to comment on memoirs without stating thoughts about what happened to others, which are their stories to tell. But, the story is also the "book" I'm reviewing. There are likely going to be some spoilers ahead, but I will do my best to not go into any detail. Just please be advised if you choose to read further.I really liked this book, Dustn's sections all kept me interested. I could not believe some of the horrific and tragic things he went through during his drug use.His father's sections I found to be a bit repetitive and I actually had to just skim through some of them.I also don't understand after all those years how he and his wife didn't educate themselves about addiction sooner. Why didn't he put Dustin in detox to get off of drugs, instead of detoxing at home countless times, & even driving him to get drugs to help him detox? Why didn't he suggest Dustin go to rehab, or seek other professional help, such as even just going to see a therapist? The only person he spoke to was his brother in law, who was a probation officer, who suggested the best thing to do was to have Dustin arrested. I just can't grasp that. Dustin probably would have been one of the ones who benefited from rehab early enough on to have been spared years of misery, since he actually did benefit from attending the 6 month place, even though he still messed up afterward, he got something out of it. A seed had definitely been planted--so much so that he put himself in jail! Why jail?! Why not go back to rehab? I know his parents struggled with money, but there are rehab programs for those with no way to pay. All of them went years believing that Dustin could simply put drugs down for good, by himself, right after he got all of the drugs after his system. Blows my mind. I guess because I'm in recovery and I know just how obvious it is that that's not a likely scenario. As difficult as it is, it's less difficult to get off of drugs than to stay off of them, especially right after getting off of them. It's extremely difficult even with rehab & help from others. I was never even as entrenched as Dustin was, and it was difficult. My addiction was pills, but the short acting opiates Vicodin and Percocet, and it was still hard. Harder yet to get and stay off of Suboxone, which I was put on for a few years to help my addiction.However, no doubt his family truly loved him very much, and they all suffered. I think Dustin is super strong for wanting recovery so much that he chose jail. It's remarkable where he was, and where he's at. The book was well written, with just a few grammatical errors, but nothing major. One example was a vein in an arm was spelled "vain", which actually refers to a conceited person, not the vein in the arm. They didn't take anything away from the book, though. Other reviews mentioned that it's full of useful information about what to do if someone you know is an addict, but I totally disagree. There is some basic information listed, but there could have been so much more. I would still recommend this book, though, to read about Dustin's journey, and I'd also love another book in the future from him.

This is a "must read" for anyone who is dealing with drug addiction; whether for yourself, or a drug addicted family member or friend. The book is written by a father and his son who was addicted to heroin. One chapter was written by the son, telling how easy it to become addicted, and, how hard it to recover. The next chapter is written by the father, who talks about the parents' and the family's side. I think parents should buy this book for their children, and they should do it before the child is 12. If the thought of sleeping in a field, on the bare ground, with no prospects or hope doesn't scare you, nothing will

A Walk In His Shoes by Dustin and Dallas John will take you on a walk that you won’t soon forget.Written by both the drug addicted son and concerned father, each chapter shares a different perspective of the same timeframe and set of events. I enjoyed the layout and after a few chapters I found myself curious about what the alternate perspective would hold and how it would differ.The story, told with raw and real emotion, held my attention and I found myself going from cheering Dustin on to being in tears over and over again. Although I haven’t experienced drug addiction first hand, I learned a lot about the struggle while reading this book and applaud the author for being brave enough to share his story.The book is well written and I would definitely read more from this author. This book will stay with me for a long time.A must read for anyone faced with addiction and everyone who loves an addict.

This is a fantastic book for anyone age 8 and over. I wish this book was written when my child men were young because I promise you I would have read it to each of them. Education is powerful and most people don't realize or understand how serious it is to experiment with drugs.With that said, I couldn't put the book down. Justin and his father put aside all of their pride to tell and share their horrible ride with addiction. I cannot thank them enough for sharing their story.FYI ~ Several times throughout the book the Father feels that him and his wife were stupid. Never once did I think that and I believe most parents would agree. Never give up on anyone, especially your children.Thank you Dustin for sharing your struggle with the world. You and your family now have the chance to help so many l people.

I chose this book because I work at a drug rehab assisting those who are battling with the life of addictions. I am a recovering alcohol and addict myself who has made a decision to help others overcome theirs as I have overcome mine. My drugs of choice were mostly marijuana and alcohol with brief episodes of cocaine and meth. Heroin was a drug I never did. Since the rehab I am employed at works only with opioid addictions, this book was very informative in helping me to understanding what this drug heroin does to the body and what withdrawal looks like. It is also a great perspective from the family side of addiction. The lengths a family member will go to go help their addicted child to overcome their addiction and the heartbreak that they ensure when their efforts fail again and again. Bought as more of a joke gift for a huge Game of Thrones fan but it was kind of interesting in an "oh, really" or "oh, that's funny way". Not my personal choice as I am not into the show but they liked it and thought it was fun.

Fun book, but not a fabulous piece of literature. It does contain some interesting thoughts and tidbits for the Game of Thorns fan.

Easy read, full of interesting information, much more than I expected. Nice dash of humor every now and then too. You'll be able to amaze people at parties with your knowledge of little known facts about onion DNA ;-)

This book is, in one, oversimplifying word, cool. It just is. It's Game of Thrones, Mythbusters, and the history channel. And it was absolutely fascinating.With section titles like Sex and the Single Dragon, the essays are sharp, funny, and well put together. So many aspects of Game of Thrones, from dragons to sword making to walls of ice, broken down and investigated and "What If?"'ed.The majority of the bookmarks I made in this were just for subjects I want to read more about. Some basic, like why have I never read about the Spanish Inquisition? How did I not know that the US government thought loading bats with napalm and flying them into enemy territory was a good idea? Where do I find out more information on Damascus steel? How do people find out stuff like this, I NEED MORE INFORMATION.Each subject is exceptionally well researched. I'm tickled by the idea of all these scientists and professors being asked to give their opinions on wildfire, 700 foot walls of ice, and what dragons would really be like. And the fact that they did!Not every subject was a success. The first chapter of the book focuses on dragons, and almost all of the information is focused around komodo dragons. Which are not even close to comparable, and this sets a really bad tone for the book. Luckily it picked up after that, but I wish she'd started with something else.Also, I'm confused about the lack of an introduction. I realize I was reading an ARC, and I'm hoping the finished product will have an opening. Because it's a waste not to have a chapter telling your audience what they're about to get themselves into. I like intros far more than I do back-of-the-book blurbs.I cannot stress enough that this book is so freaking cool. A must-have for any Game of Thrones fan, book readers and TV show watchers. There's something in here for everyone

I bought this as a gift for my brother, a GoT fan, so I can't read it until he's finished with it, but the covers are terrific and I loved the story of how the cover illustration of the throne was created.

I was given this book and I intend to pass it on to my son when I am done. Not only is the text really funny, the little drawings are hysterical (white walker in Santa Claus hat and beard). It's also a useful reminder of some of the events in past books (or episodes). Plus, there really is a lot of good science in it. As I am a scientist myself, I can appreciate her knowledge of animal behavior, wolf genetics, etc. The price is very reasonable for this entertaining book.

The author does an excellent job of explaining the policy behind the development of federal environmental law from its inception to 2004. It speaks to the influence of the executive, legislative and judicial branches along the way. With an understanding of the development of this body of law along with the policies and challenges of arriving at its 2004 state, the reader is in a better position to appreciate the current challenges and developments in this far reaching area of law.

This is a good solid reference for the layman. It presents a bit of the sausage-making of regulations. This volume makes the limitations of regualtion based on media (air, water) as opposed to ecosystem structure and function obvious.

Quick read, packed with information. Highly recommend it for people interested in environmental law, and what to expect in the future of this field.

Lazarus places environmental laws in broader context, drawing on history and an extraordinary variety of cultural, scientific, and political details to make candid generalizations. This is unusual in a time of fragmentation and compartmentalization of U.S. academic research disciplines, as well as society, beginning in the 1960s.Thus, for example, many textbooks on environmental policy and history and most environmental organizations tend to focus on the Scottish immigrant advocate of environmental preservation, John Muir, and Theodore Roosevelt as U.S. environmental pioneers. In contrast, Lazarus points out George Perkins Marsh's 1864 book, "Man and Nature" as the groundbreaking study of the interaction of human society with ecology. Among other things,Lazarus notes the significance of public health awareness and advances around 1900, early "municipal efforts to control pollution", the municipal zoning movement, and the enactment by Congress of the Food and Drug Act, and Meat Inspection Act in 1906.Lazarus' unquenchable curiosity nourishes his ability, found in a minority of scholars, to use concrete detail in ways that clarify the big picture, rather than letting it confuse or obfuscate. An example is citation of the effects of DDT to control malaria by public health workers in Borneo in the 1960s.The well-intentioned efforts of public health workers caused decimation of the lizard population when they ate DDT-contaminated food. This in turn decreased the local cat population that had been dependent on lizards for much of their diet. Reduction of the cat population led to an explosion of caterpillars that destroyed the thatched roofs, and rats that spread disease within the village. In short, the story illustrates the complexity and sensitivity of ecological relationships.The author also offers probing and significant detail on political interactions relating to environmental policy. He cites President Nixon's order to his staff to "get his administration out front on the environment" in 1969 and 1970, and the Nixon Administration's early initiatives. He also notes that in time Nixon cooled on environmental action, "becoming convinced that environmentalists were running amok".Lazarus points out in his introduction that the 1970s environmental laws were "enormously radical" , and that in spite of intense and continuing reform efforts, these laws continue to dominate the U.S. environmental management system. He is mindful of some of the problems with current environmental law, including its patchwork nature and objections by business and other groups. However, he embraces the necessity of centralized command & control law and decries the paralysis in extension of lawmaking. Based on my own historical research (that gained valuable material from Lazarus's book) and comparisons with EU policy*, I believe the book overlooks important issues that have come into ever sharper focus since the publication of Lazarus's work.Most important is the fact that the U.S. system remains dominated by an outdated system of labyrinthine laws enacted in response to an atmosphere of crisis more than 35 years ago. They were based on assumptions that the greatest threat to the environment came from industry, and that economic forces would overrun federal regulators if not checked. The response not only created an adversarial, rigid framework of law and regulation selectively applicable to manufacturing,other industry, and activities involving land use. The key laws gave exclusive legal standing to environmental protection (excluding economic or other values), empowered citizen enforcement, and transferred leadership roles in environmental management from professional agencies to Congress and civil courts. This politicized system is unique among advanced nations. It not only created a rift in U.S. society, but fostered subsequent hemmhoraging of U.S. manufacturing and industry, decay of infrastructure (which inevitably involves land use), and hamstrung attempts at innovation in environmental management (except in the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments). I thought that this was quite a creative and great clean reads ebook teaching kids about jazz music,etc. and how to have fun with music. I recommend this for especially any young kids and up who likes music a lot. And lots of colorful pictures too. a these are my reason for giving this ebook five stars. I bought this book because it is important for young people to know about jazz and “scat” singing. I love that the character is based on my favorite singer, Al Jarreau.

I purchased this book on my Kindle for my little nephews and my god-daughters. They loved the interactive abilities the book came with. Even though the little ones could not read, they were able to follow along with the author and responded gleefully to the different sounds on each page. I highly recommend this book for children. Carmen Rubin knows how to captivate the mind and interest of children.

This book is the perfect introduction to music education for children. Beautifully illustrated and wonderfully written, Ashti Meets Birdman Al picks up where music teachers have been forced to leave off in this time of education cuts and removals of music programs from schools.
