Perhaps it is silly to review last years edition to this wonderful line of books, but I felt it was necessary. I used to love the Guiness World Records book when I was a kid, and looked forward to getting one every Christmas. I purchased this as a sort of gag-gift for my girlfriend, but I was also somewhat excited to re-light that fire from my childhood. Unfortunately, that did not happen, as this was the sorest of sore disappointments that I've experienced recently. The book is rather underwhelming, the graphics are uninteresting, and the records are really not impressive. The only one that I remember (simply for the sheer stupidity) is "most baked beans eaten in 120 seconds with a toothpick". We had a good laugh at that, but opted not to take it with us during the move, I wouldn't want the movers to waste precious time and back strength carrying this disappointment.

My kids have enjoyed this series of books, so when I saw this latest edition available as a Kindle Daily Deal, I thought it would make a great little gift. Unfortunately, it was obviously not tested adequately by the publisher before making it available in Kindle format. My kids have 7" Kindle Fire HDs, and the book is not readable. The text is tiny and jumbled with the graphics, which clearly are not sized for proper display on 7" Kindle Fire HDs (and perhaps not on other Kindles either). If you're thinking of getting this for non-Kindle devices, think again. I have a variety of devices with the Kindle app installed, and none of those were listed as options as the target device when I made the purchase.Note that my rating does not address the content of this book, just the format. If you really want this book - and again, my kids have enjoyed the previous editions - then wait for the Kindle version to be fixed or buy a physical copy.

the book itself is fine. however the binding was broken when it arrived. the used review said '' used-good''. I expected once and a while a note or two. instead the binding was completely broken and the pages sticking out of the book. that is not what I call ''good condition''. I would call that bad condition. because I was expecting and good copy for a used book. instead I found a big peace of junk. I would make the review used BAD condition. so ''good condition'' to the review is BAD condition to everyone else in this world. I WAS NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL!!!!!

This book is really really cool and comes alive. There is an iPhone/ipad app that works in conjunction with the book. You aim the camera at the book page and you receive a moving visual of what you are looking at. My kids love it.

My 10 year old likes the book but I was really hoping it would be more like the ones I used to read on the 70's/80's where there were endless pages (ok, maybe hundreds) of records. This is more flash than content, but to someone like my son who is not familiar with how things used to be, it's ok.

My kids wanted it in order to read about what type of records there are around the world.Eventhough there is too much information, it is well-sorted throughout the book. As with any record keeping book, it has records that you don't care, but it has a lot of records that you will like them very much due to their curiosity and how it was achieved...I don't regret buying it...

My evaluation is the same. My family members, for some inexplicable reason, for years have enjoyed and sought out almanacs, record books, etc. So, naturally, at Christmas and birthday, I try to get them as gifts. By last year, I became a convert to Amazon and avoided the stifling crowds, the "Sorry, we're out of it" for late shoppers like me and the looking for a parking place. I have turned to Amazon for success.

Obviously, unlike the hardcover or paperback, one does not flit through pages aimlessly, but rather has some idea as to what you want to see, although one can randomly jump around. The amount of information available is vast, and one must be disciplined in searching for items required.The beauty is that the information is available for ever even if outdated. What a cute, beautiful and fun approach to teaching about the origin of the universe. My daughter (3.5 yo) found it engaging and easy to understand for the most part. The recursive way of telling the story made the steps make sense to her in a way other books have not. We're strongly atheist but I don't think there is anything in this book that would insult most religious parents who want to expand their children's horizons a bit.Pros:- Easy for young children to grasp.- Fun and engaging.- Beautiful art.Cons:- Like a lot of these books, it subtlely elevates humans above other animals as if we're the pinnacle of evolution.

I don't normally love books that build upon each page, making you repeat phrases over and over. The little old lady who swallowed a fly style... but this one has such great illustrations, the repeating language is building upon events so it helps solidify the topic... it's a good read about a complicated topic.

I bought this book because I loved the title, and delighted in the idea of sharing a theoretical model with my little one! Though it's true that the words are a bit confusing to parse at first, it's really just a momentary confusion—the split presentation of information is something that will grow with the child. Across the page spreads, there's singsong prose, sometimes venturing into visual poetry, to keep the young child entertained. And on those same page spreads are informational paragraphs, tucked into the corners, for the edification of the more advanced reader. I am not a huge fan of the way the author was illustrated, but it hasn't interfered with my child's enjoyment of the book.

We use several books together to begin a discussion of evolution and the formation of life and the Earth. My son was 3 or 4 when we started. He's 5 now and he kind of understands. We also go to museums and watch nature shows. It's a process. No one book is going to do the whole job for you.The one thing i don't love about this book is how many times the lines are repeated and it gets to be a long drawn out thing. Sometimes I just end up skipping a few lines.

Perfect for all ages. I wasn't sure about this at first because the illustrations are not scientifically accurate. My son didn't mind at all. He is captivated by the artwork and prose that truly captures the beauty of the real universe without the need for metaphysics. The main story is age appropriate and educational (he's 4), but the book also includes facts for older kids and adults. I learned quite a bit reading this book! I've purchased quite a few kids' books about evolution recently, and this is my favorite.

I wanted to love this book. The first and last page have a great message, "you are as old as the stars," and the last two pages are beautifully illustrated. However, the story itself and illustrations throughout the main book are disappointing. What you see on the cover is the best of it… black, with lots of yellow, orange, and red starbursts. Honestly, it looks like the kind of artwork a toddler does with finger paint in preschool. Yes, it's space, but they could have played a lot more with color. There's nothing to hold a child's (visual) interest, nor are the words colored correctly to contrast well and stand out from the background. Reading it reminds me of reading a badly-done webpage with red letters and a black background. Ouch. Personally, I don't find myself wanting to read this book with my son, so I doubt he enjoys it much, either.Each page has 2 versions of a "story" or information about "the big bang," and the toddler version of the "story" is just repetitious… the sentences build on each other, rather like the 12 days of Christmas, and the words mean very little. The illustrations do nothing to add to the meaning, either.I don't understand why they couldn't stick with the theme on the first and last pages of the book… that's obviously what people are looking for. The information on each page (for older kids) is fine, but reads like a bad textbook, and I think a kid who is old enough to understand it would be WELL beyond this type of a kids' book anyway, and better served by a book with real illustrations of space and more kid friendly explanations.

We love this book. My daughter pretty much has it memorized and we take turns reading it to each other. She likes that she can change the lyrics of twinkle twinkle little star"twinkle twinkle little starnow I know what you are..."She also loves the part about breathing air the dinosaurs breathe. She's brought this book to school to share several times

Love the way this book ties you in with the creation of the universe. I always loved the line “we are all made of star dust”, and this book takes the journey of our solar system’s past and brings it full circle to wrap you up and make you feel included, as we all should.

It was a fun read (or listen as most of it was audiobook for me). There some sections of romance, fantasy, and thrilling action. It was enthralling whenever he focused on these. However, it seems that Rosenberg's main goal was to use story form to disseminate information about Islam in general but particularly the beliefs amongst some Shia Muslims about the coming of the Twelfth Imam and to a lesser degree Iranian culture. (It would also seem he was critiquing the US relations with Iran under the Obama administration, but if so, it is done in a way that could just be read as background information that helps drive the main character's story.) I've never known much about Muslim theology in general so I can't offer an opinion for how accurate it all is, but it seems well-researched and Rosenberg has a reputation for knowing his stuff. He works it all into the story naturally. It only bothered me because I wasn't expecting it, and doing this in story keeps me in reality instead of helping me escape from it.Knowing he is a Christian author I was impressed with how he avoided some cliché story elements. In general it seemed to be the story he wanted to tell as opposed to the story he had to alter here and there to make sure he was a good Christian writer. Props to him for that. I will also say the ending of the book was quite frustrating, but, after reflection, I must confess it was probably the best way to end it.I would certainly recommend the book, but with the caution that elements of the story will remove the reader from it. Or if someone wants to learn more about Shia eschatology, but they don't enjoy non-fiction I would gladly recommend this as a starting point.

Absolutely one of the greatest book series I have ever had the privilege of reading! The characters and the story line will literally suck the reader, into the characters lives and emotions of each move made. I found with myself, will without a doubt, I chose a side, with certain characters and the Nation each represent. The reader becomes so engrossed, that you will find yourself celebrating your chosen characters and the Nation's they are battling for achievements. Tears when they failed, joyful when they succeed in their allotted missions. More than likely Christians, Religious Hebrews from a Messianic background, having Biblical knowledge of both Old and New Testament Scriptures and End Time prophecies, will be more in tune with this series. But I would like to suggest that any person alive today, regardless of either a reader of the Bible or the Qur'an, take time to read the series and fact check what is written in both, comparing writings quoted within the book, with each of the above mentioned.

All right, I gave this book a big chance because I completely agree with this author's theory that the Antichrist or the son of Destruction will come from the religion of Islam. I am not giving the series 2 Stars because I disagree with his message or beliefs because I honestly share them. What I am giving two stars for is the rather pointless storytelling that Rosenberg seemed to have struggled with.Half of this book is concentrated on some rather pointless boring fishing trip that the main character took in his childhood which was supposedly significant do his development but I found myself skipping through the whole thing. Also this romance with the Marseille character he had honestly was not interesting or appealing to me whatsoever. Marseille was a boring and one-dimensional. Seriously, if you're going to have a love-interest how about having a woman write your woman character, huh? I noticed it was the same way with the CIA agent Eva. Very flat personality. Rosenberg doesn't know how to write women. And that's understandable because he's not a woman. So again he should have gone the extra mile to make the characters tangible.And then there was the rather Hokie unbelievable situations that would occur in this book. I have a hard time believing that some CIA guy would show up in a County Jail to recruit some teenager who was spiraling out of control for the CIA just because he had a hunch he might be trustworthy. No way. For me that was pure Hollywood and not credible.It's rather disappointing because I tried really hard to like this book and I managed to up until the second book but I really think that my money is better spent on better books. Rosenberg seems to take after Tim lahaye of the Left Behind series in his overly dramatic writing style. Maybe it was acceptable or "hip" in their era, I have no doubt that others still do find it appealing but I just can't take it seriously. And I take the End-Times very seriously so it's not an issue of that. But the cheesiness of the series unfortunately is a huge put off.I sincerely hope that it speaks to people and others can enjoy it.

Much of this story takes place in Tehran, my place of birth. This book starts off when the U.S. Embassy in Tehran came under attack back in 1979. I vividly remember driving past there several months later. This was not a good time to be there at all. Even as a child, I remember feeling awful for the hostages. It was so all so depressing. There was a feeling of dread and fear – like a dark cloud that had come over the entire country.This is the third book that I have read by this author and it’s probably my favorite. I was truly impressed by how accurately he depicted Iran and the Iranian culture. I liked the protagonist, loved all the action, and am looking forward to reading the rest in the series.I can only recommend this book with the caution that it does have certain Christian elements, and so may not appeal to all readers.

Recently took a letterpress class, and studying this book before before trying to print would have saved me and other students hours of time and aggravation. It's full of practical advice (practice tying off and moving blocks of random type BEFORE you are trying to move your precious set type blocks; do NOT mix your proportional spaces for between words with your random sized spaces that are only useful at the end of a line; start each line with a quad block and your type will hold together much better; slugs should be a little shorter than their nominal pica length; etc. etc. etc.) and the line drawings are excellent and informative. Extremely useful for the beginning letterpress printer.

I wrote a lovely review of this book and of course fab shipping etc. but I accidentally sent my half finished commentary to outer space and that makes me feel very bad. In essence The book is perfect and great for starters in metal type and a valuable refresher for someone who is taking up the flag after a number of years of oxygen depletion. Bottom line, Amazon service great~ book can inspire just by defining the beginnings and the future.

Printing for pleasure was written in the 50's this fine volume is about printing now, gathering old pieces of equipment and making them work well to make beautiful individual pieces of work. Only Letterpress does this well, and this volume is full of useful information on finding, buying and safely using the presses of a technology that has been in retreat. This is a manual for those who adhere to the principle of 'good enough'technology. I particulary enjoyed researching the tables here that enabled me to date my presses. If you are printing now then this is the modern manual that explains so much

This book is an excellent Letterpress primer. The only downside was that, except for Figure 1, none of the other figures were referenced in the text and were meant to be stand alone items. The book was easy to read for a person just getting started with Letterpressing, but having some knowledge of the process. The line drawings were easy to understand as there were no photos. The sections on the types of machines, the setting up of a shop, and mainteance of the equipment was a great help.

This is a quirky and engaging read. The subject matter is perhaps a little oddly organised but is nonetheless comprehensive. All in all it is obviously written by an individual mind in an author who is passionate, knowledgable and highly experience in the quirks of letterpress printing.My only quibble is, that being non-American, the unashamed US focus with virtually total ignoring of letterpress printing terms etc relevant to the rest of the world is just a bit annoying.

This book gave lots and lots of arguments that were very nice and well thoughtout, but it often seemed that the point-counterpoint "arguing" was a little redundant. The whole book consisted of an article or an event that had to do with the ethics of euthanasia and two people with conflicting views would write why. I wish that the book had some documented dialog between the two opinions. It was a little boring reading the same opinions over and over again. "euthanasia as long as it is consentual and necessary should be permitted yada yada yada" "killing another innocent being should not be permitted at all because it is murder yada yada yada" Each and every writer was very elegant and well spoken, but I simply wish there was more dialog between the two people, not simply between book editors.

It goes without saying that this is an immensely difficult subject--one about which I have many conflicting thoughts--so it was very gratifying to have someone present the relevant issues in such a clear and balanced way. Thanks to Jonathan Moreno for this book.

The very first chapter will be a great eye-opening if you never learned about T-SQL logical processing. This first chapter explains why you were getting certain error messages you can't even debug and with which google search can't help either. The next chapter and the subsequent 3 chapters really give you the power and the ability to think like a "pro" and SQL codes just pour from your mind to your fingers and to the keyboard. I just read the first five chapters and I was able to solve so many business problems that I couldn't solve before and about which I couldn't find help online with Google.This book is packed with excellent expert knowledge to help you grow your skills and think and design solutions for solving business problems.

We've all been there: taking over a project from someone else only to wonder what they were doing as the code was poorly written.This book is going to make realize YOU are also writing bad code.Not intentionally, of course, but Ben-Gan really puts emphasis on performance and analyzing queries to show there's a better way to do a query, as most of the examples are what we see and write every day.He doesn't just give a single code and say "Do it this way from now on." Instead, he talks to you as a professional and shows you the differences between doing the same query multiple ways.Most of us think we understand how SQL works, but I can attest, both from my own ignorance and others' viewpoints, we really don't. Ben-Gan has been with SQL for many years, both in development of the database structure and how to write queries to take advantage of those changes.The logical processing chapter, which is important given it's the first chapter, should open the eyes of many SQL code writers out there. There's an older version out there, but I still recommend this one because the window feature (new for 2012+) is worth learning even if you can't use it yet.That's about it. itzik ben-Gan just writes very helpful books. Cant go wrong with anything he writes. This book is a Great reference and certainly helps fill in knowledge holes I had.

The book is full of important information and examples. T-SQL language is covered in clear and diverse examples demonstrating the many ways you can utilize T-SQL to accomplish the many requirements one must be able to handle.

The absolute best. I have a friend of mine that started with sql about a year ago. I recommended this book and watching Itzik's youtube videos. He sent me some of his code the other day. It is years ahead of people I know who have been writing sql for 20 years. If you want to learn SQL this is the book !!! Itzik changed my life when I took his class in 2010. I had been developing in SQL for 10 years prior and thought I knew what I was doing. I work in healthcare with ridiculously complex queries. I would stay late nights, work weekends an spend weeks writing pages of code. My stress level was through the roof. Now I can write those same queries in less than a day in an organized, maintainable and efficient way using techniques and approaches I learned from Itzik. Itzik is by far the best trainer out there he explains everything form the basics until you get it. I highly recommend taking one of his classes if he is teaching in your area. His books are the best, I used to have many know I just use his.

This is an excellent book. It's incredibly dense with useful information. The sample lesson files are VERY well organized and follow the text of the book perfectly.
