while this book is superior to many on supply chain optimization, it tells the same story - that there is a lot of waste when you have a lot of SKUs. As I generally appreciate mathematics for simulations, and such are the bedrock of improvement in this day and age, I found the book lacking. However, it's call to unifying the sales planning and inventory and shipping management, with clear guidelines, is refreshing. It's a quick read, but not a long-term reference: glaringly, it omits simulations. Can I name a better book on the subject? no, but there should be. If you're going to mine your supply chain for wasted dollars, read this, get people talking, then model model model.

This book is very efficient on describing current business challenges related with supply chain in a high level (executive level) and it's also very good on providing real business issues that could be easily related with any issues faced by supply chain professionals.Highly recommended for supply chain 1st/2nd level managers that would like to learn more about problems and potential solutions because gives an overview of what situations those managers will be facing during their supply chain journey.Good for supply chain executives because helps to put complex problems into simple descriptions and because provides a refresh of supply chain fundamental strategic guidelines. It's not a book that will provide deeper concepts on any topic, but provides several hints on how to solve real issues.

For a manager or non-supply-chain executive, there is good information in this book and the "right" amount of detail. For new supply chain professionals, this book provides a good high-level view from which to branch out on more in-depth topics for reading. As the word "agenda" in the title implies, reading this book does not provide a full overview of supply chain best practices, but it's 194 pages will get you grounded in a solid structure so that you can fill in the details. If your company struggles with meeting customer demand, high working capital and cross-functional silos, this book was written for you.

This book was refreshing in that it provided a great balance between strategy, process, technology, and people. I find that this type of balanced Supply Chain perspective can be difficult to find, as many authors have a bias towards one area (like technology or strategy, for example). The book did an admirable job of connecting Working Capital to Economic Profit to Shareholder Value. It also provided practical guidance for supply chain managers and executives to better demonstrate how supply chain excellence can directly impact overall corporate goals.Overall, I found the book concise, practical, and insightful!

What a great book! Exceptionally well written, easy to read and layed out with a very logical flow. Do not think that this book is just a supply chain book. It has numerous real life examples and advices that deal with total enterprise businesses across various selling channels. The book will make one question and rethink the way they operate and attack everyday challenges and how shareholder value is driven; from external supplier selection, negotiations and management to internal team building. Highly recommended.

Good practicable book about driving value in a supply chain. The book demystifies how to go about identifying opportunities to focus your supply chain improvement initiatives.

Informative and helpful

This book really opened my eyes to the finance side, which to me, as someone in the planning and IT area of the supply chain, had seemed a bit of a mystery before I read this. Lots of other good stuff as well, but for me the financial overview jumps it up a notch.

Review

Bookwatch-Don't expect the usual light gardening guide reading, Volume 1 of Edible Forest Gardens: Ecological Vision and Theory for Temperate Climate Permaculture packs in serious surveys of the ancient practice of forest gardening, which offers homeowners and gardeners a new way of viewing modern home landscaping and nature. Useful plants can be blended to supply daily needs, the land can be 'untamed' to return support to healthy populations of plant and animal species. Years of experience goes into Edible Forest Gardens; this first volume provides a review of the ecological and cultural foundations for recognizing forest gardening as a viable ecological alternative in modern North America. Dave Jacke runs his own ecological design firm consulting on permaculture and landscapes around the world; his co-author Eric Toensmeier founded the former Perennial Vegetable Seed Company and has worked with the New England Small Farm Institute. A highly recommended pick; especially for college-level and serious collections on permaculture and horticulture.Plants and Gardens News--Patricia Jonas, Brooklyn Botanic Garden-But even if you grow enough organic food to feed yourself, are you doing what's best for the ecosystem? "Many drawbacks of modern agriculture persist in organic farming and gardening," Dave Jacke and Eric Toensmeier write in Edible Forest Gardens, because they do not "mimic the structure of natural systems, only selected functions." Even Quail Hill Farm members are still harvesting mostly annual crops grown in plowed fields. Jacke and Toensmeier offer a radical vision for stepping out of the conceptual continuum of conventional agriculture and organic farming. They point to the productivity of temperate forests--which is twice that of agricultural land in terms of net calories--and take that as their design model. Building on Robert Hart's classic book, Forest Gardening, and incorporating permaculture practice, Jacke and Toensmeier propose a garden where many species of edible perennial plants are grown together in a design that mimics forest structure and function.Edible Forest Gardens is an ambitious two-volume work whose influence should extend well beyond ecologists and permaculturists and, in the best of all outcomes, reach into the mainstream. Volume one lays out the "Ecological Vision and Theory for Temperate Climate Permaculture," and it also includes a very useful analysis of existing forest gardens (one only 50 by 90 feet) and a tantalizing 30-page appendix of "top 100" species. As of this writing, volume two, which focuses on practical design and maintenance considerations, is just being released, but on the evidence of volume one, I have no doubt the set will be an indispensable reference for gardeners and farmers for decades."When people have food gardens," the authors write, "they usually are tucked out of sight and out of view of the neighbors. They rely on external inputs of energy, nutrients, insect and disease controls, and water and are based primarily on annual plants. For some reason, growing food is considered unsightly, unseemly, possibly antisocial, and in some towns and cities, illegal! The tremendous infrastructure we have built in our cities and towns reflects a culture and horticulture of separation and isolation." The consequences of such attitudes about growing food have been disastrous, and each of us can contribute to the repair effort. Jacke and Toensmeier say that the principles of forest gardening can be applied even in a tiny urban yard or on a rooftop. Containers of edible perennials and annuals on a rooftop are not most farmers' idea of agriculture, but I grow nearly 20 percent of the authors' top 100 species and intend to look for ways to take this small start much further. And what about chocolate and oranges? Clearly there are foods that cannot be grown in a temperate forest. "We do not expect forest gardening to replace regular gardening or the foods we know and love," the authors admit. "Just how far we can take forest gardening in supplying food for ourselves is not yet determined." Finding the answer may be the most optimistic work gardeners and farmers can do."These will be the benchmark works in the field for many years. The level of scholarship and meticulous footnoting is unsurpassed by anything I've seen in permaculture literature."--Toby Hemenway, author of Gaia's Garden

From the Publisher

"...But the book I will be keeping by me for the seasons ahead... is Edible Forest Gardens by Dave Jacke with Eric Toensmeier. In its way this book--the first of two volumes--is a sequel to the wonderful Tree Crops: A Permanent Agriculture (1929) by J. Russell Smith.... Edible Forest Gardens offers a vision of the garden that reaches well beneath its aesthetic surface and into its ecological depths. It reminds us that whatever gardens are an oasis from, they can never be an oasis from the natural world or our own underlying economic needs." --Verlyn Klinkenborg The New York Times Book Review June 5, 2005 "This is certainly the most thorough and realistic assessment of the potential for temperate perennial-based gardening that I have seen -- and I've read everything I've been able to find on temperate perennial crops, going back to J. Russell Smith and John Hershey... The first volume of Edible Forest Gardens is a superb primer on ecology as it relates to horticulture in general, and I highly recommend it even for gardeners who aren't primarily interested in useful perennials..." --Greg Williams Publisher, Hort Ideas

Although this is an expensive set, there is so much valuable information in these 2 books for those interested in permaculture and forest gardening in the temperate climates of North America, it is well worth the price. The authors have scientific information to back their recommendations and to give credence to the longterm benefit and viability of the vision of permaculture and forest gardening…it is no longer just a wonderful vision but actually in the realm of reality. I loved the second volume with all the tables of plants arranged by their functions. There was so much information presented in a way that you can design a plan for your forest that will work really well together and will have a really great chance to thrive. If your plan includes plants that fix nitrogen and that accumulate nutrients such as calcium and potassium you will not need to add fertilizers. If you plan to have plants that support bees with nectar and pollen, you will have no problem pollinating your crops. If you make sure you have plants and habitats that attract predatory wasps and other beneficials , you will not need to worry about pests as much. I don't agree with everything in this book…such using glycophosphate. I think some of the soil preparation techniques that are recommended are too labour intensive…there must be a better way but overall there is really a lot of useful information

"The" book on forest gardening in North America. I wish I would have bought this first. So many other books I have are encompassed in this book. Volume 1 is about forest ecology, learning about what we are trying to mimic. Volume 2 is the practical applications section. These books and the Permaculture Designers manual are all you need. Volume 2 is a great reference. Volume 1 is pretty dense, but very interesting, thorough background information for what we are trying to accomplish.

These are SERIOUS reference books that you will have to go back to again and again. Martin Crawford has a very readable tome about food forests which is excellent--these are excellent too, but give much more indepth analysis of the process and on ecology. I have read them in tandem--again, these are books for the serious raw foodists and sustainable gardener, or designer and will probably take MONTHS of reading and years of digesting, but I think they are well worth it AND will serve anyone serious about sustainable agriculture, well.

I had originally checked these books out at the library, but, being as they are so large, I couldn't even get close to finishing the first one in only two weeks. I was impressed with them, however, and decided to spend the money on my own copies.I was so excited when they arrived--I'm still only partially through Book 1--and it's great having my own copies. And, unlike the ones from the library, these ones were in good shape--I'm a freak about the condition of my books, and I intend to keep these looking as good as they did the day they came!

It's no surprise to learn that Dave and Eric worked for seven years to write the Edible Forest Gardens books; the depth and breadth of permaculture knowledge that they present is incredible. Although I've heard some say that these books are not an easy read, I've found them to be fascinating, enjoyable and indispensable. I started my journey into permaculture with Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway, then decided to plant an edible forest in the back yard, so I purchased Volume 2 of Edible Forest Gardens, since it covers the practical consideration of forest gardening. I was so impressed with the book that I then purchased volume 1, which focuses on the ecological vision and theory for temperate climate permaculture. Highly recommended!

The author, Dave Jacke, has nailed this topic cold. Informative, to the point, "hands on" useable information..... Simply the best book I've found on this topic.Mr. Jacke's work is as good or better than Fukuoka, Louis Bromfield, Joel Salatin or Wendell Berry. This book will has become a how-to classic. A must have if your planning a premiculture project of your own.

I hesitated to spend so much money on these books. I find the information they contain to be the result of years of hard work by many people. They are prominently located on my reference shelf for easy access. If you are interested in Edible Forest Gardens, you will not be disappointed in the information they contain.Forest Gardening is a lengthy endeavor. You won't get many chances to get it right, so better to do it right the first time.

I am starting a business called Epic Edible Backyards, and researching permaculture and ways to maximize food production. This set of books has been on my reading list for a while and they were well worth the wait. For someone interested in ecology, nature, permaculture, and design, you will enjoy all of the little and big drops of wisdom in these books.

In his brief introduction to this first volume of a landmark series about a cyborg, Dark Horse president Mike Richardson cites all the thematic questions you'd expect--what makes people "human," what is a soul, are machines capable of authentic emotion? And while Shirow Masamune's masterful Ghost in the Shell certainly addresses such issues, often in profound ways, it's worth nothing that Richardson does leave out one question: What are the erotic implications of this blurring between the organic and the synthetic? It's not an idle question, but rather one that confronts readers in several different forms, perhaps most obviously when the protagonist, the immanently capable Major Motoko Kusanagi, regularly appears in pinup-style poses. One senses, though, that these are bones thrown to a certain audience segment and, for better or worse, they're not apt to trouble hetero female readers who may be accustomed to a lot more cheesecake in manga (not to mention mainstream superhero comics). Moreover, it soon becomes apparent that Masamune is playing a much deeper game here as he goes about deliberately undermining the erotic--or at least conventional assumptions about it and conventional approaches to it in comics--by positioning readers to be hit hard by far more disturbing images. In one battle scene, Kusanagi loses an arm at the elbow, metallic tendrils dangling from the stump, and she barely misses a beat--to her, it's a spare part that can be fixed or replaced, but for readers, it destroys the integrity of the female form and disrupts the pleasure of any passive voyeurism that might be occurring. Similarly, at one point, an asexual cyber-nemesis known as "The Puppeteer" takes refuge in the body of a nude female cyborg and is later interrogated while constrained--but all that remains of her (it?) is the head and topless torso, which is in fact a good example of the "shell" referenced in the title.A feminist read might contend that this is an instance of objectification in literal, even crude, terms. However, when viewed within the context of Masamune's thematic concerns, it makes complete sense. If nothing else, The Ghost in the Shell is about "programming" in the word's broadest possible meaning. That means not only the conflict between outside control versus autonomy in computers, networks, robots, and other cyber-entities, but also in groups and nations (it's subtly suggested that laws are a form of programming) and, of course, in individuals in that we're subject to the "instructions" written into us by culture, psychology, and language. Standing apart from this mechanistic view is Masamune's construct of the "ghost"--a term that roughly translates to "psyche" or "soul." That's not to say that ghosts can't be infiltrated or manipulated by criminal elements like any other part of an apparatus, but rather that this distinction between soul and "mecha" is central to nearly everything that takes place. Readers, too, are naturally going to follow a learned (i.e., installed) "program" when decoding manga or any other text and that includes reading its artwork. So when Masamune provides troubling images that don't map to our expectations, he is problemating the process and helping readers see our own programming for what it is, as an automatic reaction and not reflective of something essential either about ourselves or the images themselves. And that's true whether the input stimuli we're receiving is mildly erotic (it never really exceeds this level) or violent in nature. That said, it's not as if the action in The Ghost in the Shell is abstract or presented as a token nod at genre conventions--it's vigorous, unapologetic, and often thrilling. As Kusanagi leads her small squad of government commandoes against terrorists, hackers, and corporate criminals, the dynamic page layouts and effortlessly fluid storytelling draw us into the firefights and chase sequences like few other works in the medium. However, on a scale that may be unparalleled in graphic fiction, there's also a tremendous density of ideas. Sometimes, as if realizing the challenge of delivering on both tracks, Masamune includes footnote-like clarifications in the gutters so as not to slow things down with expository dialogue or caption boxes. Then, as a bonus treat, there's a 14-page section of author's notes in the book's backmatter that's keyed to specific pages, with the creator providing annotations on his work that make for fascinating reading in their own right. It's this combination of brain and brawn that causes The Ghost in the Shell to appeal, as the saying goes, to both the head and the heart. But that's not all. As the first volume concludes Masamune takes things in a wholly different direction: While the story has been rubbing up against the metaphysical throughout, in the final chapter, it breaks all the way through and goes for the out-and-out mystical. There's not much I can say that won't ruin things for newcomers to the franchise, so I'll leave it at that. In short, Ghost in the Shell is hard sci-fi of the best possible sort: the type that's so full of both undiluted artfulness and philosophy that it's arguably a must-read even for those who don't usually take to the genre.-- Peter Gutiérrez

Alas, I've been eagerly awaiting this "definitive" version of Ghost in the Shell and it's a pretty big disappointment. The size is certainly not deluxe (it's no longer or wider than a normal trade paperback of an American comic; I've attached an image comparing it to a Doom Patrol TPB and a DC "Deluxe" collection), and somewhat amazingly, the contents are censored yet again despite an 18+ warning (I've attached an image showing how a rather famous scene is presented here). The quality of pages is fine, and it's cool to have the story presented in the Japanese right-to-left style with the original SFX, but this is a pretty major letdown given how the book was advertised. As for extras: I don't really know what's included beyond what would have been in the normal edition. There's a glossary for the newly restored Japanese sound effects, but good luck reading it -- it's in incredibly small white font against a black background, as you can see.Alas, swing and a miss for Kodansha. I got this for $14.99 and can live with it, but run the heck away from the MSRP of $29.99.

There are a lot of reviews panning this manga due to it censoring a certain scene. As much as I hate censorship, I can understand why the publisher chose to do so in this case. The last thing the publisher wants is to get put in the news for the content while the new GITS movie just came out. My personal opinion is they would actually be better off with some controversy since that brings more attention (and sales as a byproduct). Shirow himself stated he wanted the scene removed but I think that was just done to make the content more accessible and sell-able.Aside from the censorship, I have found numerous grammar errors throughout the manga. It's not like they're just spelling mistakes, some of them are bad enough to where you have to actually stop and try to decipher what they mean. These mistakes are very easy to see, so the publisher obviously didn't have someone do any proofreading. This cannot be explained in any way other than pure laziness on their part. The quality of the print is fine and I am sure most people would appreciate its presentation as a hard cover.

The Ghost in the Shell Vol. 1 The Kindle version is the first edition of the book which is censored. Whole scenes are removed. I would hold off on this until they release a Kindle version of the second edition of the book.

There are typos and this is NOT acceptable. It's an insult to the story. In addition there are some pretty disjointed conversations which, if not done on purpose, can only be issues with the translation its annoying because the majority of the translation is done quite well. It just goes to show the laziness in production.Beyond that though its a pretty nice edition. If you complain about the size then you've never seen a regular one volume manga paperback. This edition is roughly the same size as the "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" deluxe edition. While I don't agree with censorship on principle this was NOT Censored Shirow Masamune simply decided that the lesbian sex scenes caused more problems than he would have liked as well as not adding much to the story anyway (besides explicitly stating that Kusanagi swings both ways). As far as bonus content complaints, again they are jumping the gun, as others before me have said there are a few entirely new pages and a lot more full color pages as compared to the original version.See photos:-- The first one should be "The puppeteer"-- The last one should be "squeeze" not sleaze unless there exists a usage of sleaze that I am not aware of-- The second one should be "may" not "my"

This is a gift. I used it when I had my children.

It's even better than I remembered. I purchased it for my grand daughter who is a new mom.

Dr Spock got me through 2 children and 3 grandchildren. Best baby book ever written. Bought it for my grand daughter.

The book I received is clearly written for UK residents, not American. I had to research some of the terminology used, such as "dummies" (pacifiers), "nappies" (diapers), etc. All of the resources listed are in England, which does not help us, since we live in the USA. This should be noted in the Amazon description...had it been so listed, I would have purchased from another source for an American edition, which I know exists.

Great Book

Perfect book for every generation.

This book blew me away. I went in with high expectations, and it exceeded all of them. Of course the cover drew me in. I have a soft spot for anything with a deer on it. I was standing in the book section while grocery shopping and I read the first two pages. I immediately went home and bought it on Amazon (okay, I'm a cheapskate; sue me). Also, a detail that was a MAJOR PLUS for me (and the reason I went home and bought the book after only reading two pages), the main character is missing one breast. She doesn't have a small, "cool/mysterious/sex-appeal" scar, she has a REAL scar, with actual scar tissue, and which she is self-conscious about. It's hard to put into words why that was so meaningful to me. Her scars and her past were part of who she was. At NO point did the book imply she was ugly because she was scarred, but it also meant I (the reader) was not inundated with the types of descriptions like "flawless smooth porcelain skin" because honestly how many physically flawless heroines do we need? Flaws are what make us human, and not all scars are "pretty." I don't need to think about that one cluster of acne scars on my chest every time an author beats me over the head with how their perfect MC doesn't have so much as a blemish. That was a bit of a side rant. This was a good book if you like dark fantasy and romance. It had a powerful plot that revolved around hunting the stag. The whole time I kept thinking to myself "I know exactly where this is going and it's going to be AWESOME" and then the ending took me completely be surprise and it was even more awesome than I could have imagined.I'd probably recommend this especially to fans of Leigh Bardugo even though (don't come after me) I thought the writing in WHITE STAG was even better than what I've read of Bardugo's books.

Actual rating: 3.5I’m very thankful that the Author’s Note was the first part of this book. Janneke is a strong, willful and tough as nails character but she has a lot of trauma. It’s impirtant to know if you can read her trauma without striking at your own in harmful ways. For me, this was an uncomfortable read. I’m particular the first 80 pages had me deeply struggling with who Janneke’s love interest is. I was not comfortable with the power dynamics between them. Those power dynamics shift. Without spoilers, I’ll promise you that. But. This relationship was deeply upsetting to me for the first 1/3 of the book and never really shed that initial feeling.Okay romance aside, where WHITE STAG wins is in its exploration of the monster and the monstrous. Here, everything is grey. And looking at what makes us monstrous and what makes a monster human is compelling. If you’re reading for romance and can’t handle power imbalances, then WHITE STAG is not for you. If you can handle this and want to explore the monstrous, then give WHITE STAG a try.Barbieri wrote this as a teenager and while it’s been revised since, I’m excited to see where her talent develops in future projects.

Any book that reference Der Erlkönig from the offset is a book that I am going to love. It's a rule. I didn't make the rule, I just follow it as one generally should with oddly specific rules probably made up by fairies.Speaking of fairies, WHITE STAG is the latest in a YA fantasy (and adult fantasy, for that matter) tradition that I just cannot get enough of: scary fairies! Most recognizable in the works of authors like Holly Black and Melissa Marr, the scary fairies trend has seen a spate of new authors in recent years (S. Jae-Jones, Melissa Albert, Margaret Rogerson, etc.) and I honestly couldn't be happier to see so many books connecting with the creepy side of the fair folk. White Stage definitely didn't let me down in that arena either!Janneke has spend decades in the service of her goblin master, Soren. A service, reluctantly (if not out right unwillingly) rendered, that has a terrible cost. Janneke has proven to the Permafrost -the brutal but beautiful home of the goblins - that she is goblin material, and slowly her humanity is being stripped from her. To make things more complicated, the Goblin King has just bit the dust, and an ancient ritual hunt to determine the new king is about to drag her and her master into unspeakable danger.(Someone get this girl a shock blanket, please. Because that's a lot to handle all at once.)What appealed to me the most about White Stag, aside form Barbieri's beautiful, Scandinavian-influenced world building, was the complexity of her many characters. They were very... well they weren't technically human, but when I say they were human what I mean to say is that they had fascinating depth. Janneke is torn on so many levels - ever since she was a child she's had to deal with a complex identity even she struggled to understand, tasked as she was with playing the boy and being her father's heir. Loving the hunting and the freedom, but sometimes just wanting to do the things the girls go to do, rather than existing as an uncomfortable outlier in her community. Now, to face that fact that, after the crushing loss of her family in a goblin raid and her own torture and rape at the hands of an insane, sadistic goblin lord, she is losing the last of her humanity, and thus her last connection to her old life. She is becoming what she despises. Watching her try to navigate that reality was so painful, but still so captivating.Honestly, don't miss this book. There are definitely some content warnings for remembered sexual violence, and a fair amount of gore, but if you like dark fantasy it's nothing you won't have encountered before. And everything, from the books scarred heroine, to the violet-eyed, white haired goblin master Soren (tell me he wasn't inspired by Drizzt, I am so happy), to the wild, sweeping world of the Permafrost makes for excellent reading. At it's heart White Stag is a book about, not so much what it means to be "human", as what it means to have humanity. To be and find goodness and light in the darkness.Plus that tiny cliffhanger epilogue has got me absolutely mad for a sequel.

I enjoy authors first book. My 8th grade granddaughter has enjoyed the fantasy books (Hobbit, the CS Lewis books), after reading a review of White Stag, I thought this would be a new series for her. After the book came and I was reading the author's prologue, the graphic and explicit areas of the book are not appropriate for young adults. The author wrote that some of the book is so 'heavy' that if it bothered the reader, they should just quit reading. I desire that this author be successful and learn to write not just getting 'things off of her chest' but to tell the story without the explicit deals that effect developing teens.

Great care was taken by the author and the publishers--and by their sponsor, Oak Spring Foundation--to publish this wonderful partial inventory of the great books of botanic illustration in the Library at Oak Spring, an estate that was gifted to posterity by Rachel Lambert Mellon. This review of the extraordinary Oak Spring Library of original florilegium (books on flowers by the greatest botanic illustrators of history) is done magnificently using fine papers and inks. Thus the production of this book on books is carefully and thoughtfully done. The book reviews are well written and thorough, and the Reader will be pleased to find excellent reproductions of select prints from these important books in color. This reader, knowledgeable on this subject, saw reproductions in this book that are from books he has only read about but not seen. This was a most pleasant surprise, and for this, we are grateful.Clearly, Rachel Lambert Mellon has assembled a magnificent legacy--obtaining what I thought were the unobtainable in the botanic literature. This book is a testament and is a must have for those who are assembling their own library.By combining this book with the fine Taschen publication, THE GARDEN OF EDEN--the inventory of the botanic collection in the Austrian National Library--the collector of botanic illustration will have an excellent survey of the primary sources in this field. I should note that the Garden of Eden is by the noted Professor Doctor H.Walter Lack of Berlin.

A beautiful book on the amazing library of Mrs. Paul Mellon.

Informative and brilliant illustrations.

The key here is the subtitle: "The Unlikely Origins of the Statue of Liberty." This is not the book for one who merely seeks to understand how the thing was constructed, although some of that is here. It is for the person who desires to know every conceivable artistic, religious, patriotic, and economic inspiration for this French driven project. The author, who is a European scholastic, has a deep understanding of the meanings of a multitude of pagan, Greek, Roman, Egyptian gods and other hangers-on of antiquity. (Thank God we no longer need to know all these stories to be considered literate.) Her book dives into these meanings in its first several chapters; afterwards the pace quickens and the story line is easier to follow. If you want to know how it came to be that the Statue of Liberty was located at the entrance of New York City; how it was financed; what symbols are embedded in it; what other giant statues were its predecessors; why the materials to build it are important; and the commercial backdrop in both France and the USA--this is the book for you. There is probably no finer on these aspects of the subject. One quarrel: I do think the contemporary liberal politics of Dr. Viano take over when she arrives at her Epilogue. For example, I do not agree with her assessment of a Ronald Reagan speech at the site of the Statue of Liberty. "The statue had a new identity: green and gold, she was the icon of capitalism, free enterprise, an of the elevation of the freedom of employers over the rights of employees." She also ends, somewhat clunkily to my thinking, by choosing to quote the liberal political comedian Jon Stewart about the statute after 9/11.

I'm 200 pages in and know nothing more about the Statue of Liberty than I did when I started. Lots of obscure politics, philosophy, and religion from France in the late 1800's, but little of interest. I will never finish this.

This brilliant book opens up the history of the statue of liberty like never before. Thoughtful, original and scholarly, this book not only taught me an enormous amount; it changed my vision of American history and entertained me thoroughly. This is on my must-read list.
