This has to be one of the best, if not the best book in this genre .. wait .. what genre? Realistic surrealism? A Anti-Utopian dream, or A Utopian Nightmare?People have been comparing this book by Nabokov to Kafka, but I think Kafka was hardwired to live in the shadows of the surrealistic doom he wrote about. Kind of like Ben Stiller playing himself in every movie he is in. While Nabokov was a perfectly uncrazy, supremely ironic, high-brow intellectual, who could direct his imagination anywhere he pleased, depending on what he felt like writing about. His short stories are like an encyclopedia of human mind, never mind the Lolita thing of his ..And the happy end of The Beheading that everyone can learn something from .. hard to beat that one!

Chapter 4 of the rule of St. Benedict tells the monks, "Remember to keep death before your eyes daily." What would it be like to be such a person? What would it be like to be around such a person? Cincinnatus is sentenced to death. The name harkens back to a noble figure. In this case he is sentenced to death because he makes everyone around him uncomfortable (there are worse reasons.) But he does not know the date of his death...and here is the dramatic tension of the story. I remember when my Dad died. The next morning I went into my bank and a teller I knew well smiled and asked how I was doing. She had NO clue. I have worked with many families dealing with imminent death and I know they don't want me to ask how they are doing unless they know they can answer honestly. Cincinnatus is surrounded by people going through the motions of day-to-day life and cannot appreciate why this man waiting for death doesn't appreciate THEIR struggles. Of course, they are waiting for death too; they just don't appreciate it. This is my 6th book by Nabokov and I have loved them all. And I certainly see similarities between this book and works by Kafka, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Sartre ("The Wall.") but I don't assume an influence

I only came to know of this early Nabokov novel by reading the wonderful "Reading Lolita in Tehran" by Azar Nafisi (highly recommended), a study of the relevance of literature in the personal quest for freedom from the crushing weight of oppression. Certainly the protagonist of "Invitation to a Beheading," Cincinnatus C., is a relevant case in point, given that he has been sentenced to death for an obscure crime (gnostical turpitude)and is constantly under the manipulatory pressures of absurd agents of the state. In this he is not at all unlike Nafisi and all the other victims of Khomeini's revolutionary guards who interpret the crimes as they go along. Others may find some parallels in modern America. Many have compared this Nabokov (written in 1935) to Franz Kafka, but the wellspring is really more deeply rooted in the existential guilt that plagues the modern psyche. In earlier times, all shared in the social code of justice and understood the right and wrong, whether or not they agreed with it; but in the 20th century, there emerged a certain arbitrainess of authority that made potential criminals of all somewhere inside their minds. I think of the French author Celine in this context, as well as an unpublished novel of my own written almost 40 years ago. So it is easy to see how Nafisi could apply the parallels to her situation in Tehran, forced to veil, forced to accept, unable to flee, to the situation of Cincinnatus C. I think that anyone who has lived an even mildly contemplative life can feel the constriction that such or any arbitrary authority causes. But what I really want to say about "Invitation to a Beheading" is a bit more personal in nature. Have you ever awoken from a complex dream and thought, "I wish I could write this down, it's really a good story"? No one I have ever read, including Joyce, has done as well at capturing a dream state as Nabokov does in the early pages of "Invitation." And, as if to prove it is not a fluke or a lucky break, he comes back to it again and again, right up until the powerful closing scene. "Invitation to a Beheading" is a powerful dream that too many of us have had, deep in our own gnostical turpitude. It is almost miraculous that one could capture it so well, especially one such as Nabokov whom we know for his open-eyed precision in the later works. But miraculous or not, our heightened ability to relate to it does not say good things about where we have come in the early days of the 21st century.

In this account of a man sentenced to death, Nabokov reveals a talent for the surreal. The accused man has not been told the date of his death sentence. He has been left completely in the dark. He has been locked up in a very bare and sparse prison, with guards, a prison director and assistant. Yet there are no other prisoners, none in the whole facility.The mental musings of the prisoner are the focus of the book. The incidents are often highly surreal and not possible. They sometimes seem like one is reading a Magritte. Yet they are illustrative and fascinating. In one scene his family comes to visit him in prison, complete with furniture. In another he sees the prison director who is also the assistant director as miniature people. Wherever his musings take us, they are truly of great interest.In the final scenes the surreal nature of the musing continues. The scene of the execution is somehow `disturbed.' Things are not as they should be. And as a result, he just disappears, along with everything else.While the nature of the writing is extremely Kafkaesque, Nabokov had not read any Kafka when he wrote this story. In addition, neither Kafka, nor any of the major existentialists combine their philosophy with surrealism in the same way or to the same degree as does Nabokov in this book.The book is recommended to all lovers of Nabokov and to those looking for a true contemporary classic fiction novel.

Tverberg has researched this well and shares her gained insights in a clear, comprehensive, intriguing way. This book both increases knowledge and intellectual understanding, and draws one into the love He came to offer. It makes it possible to understand how and why so many at that time were drawn irrevocably to follow Him and want to be like Him. She explains many things that may have been puzzling you, and suddenly His teachings make a whole lot more sense. For anyone, Jew or Gentile, who wishes to know and understand what Jesus was really teaching.

This is an amazing book and I love it. Every Christian read it and learn what has been missing in the teaching we have been getting in our churches over these many years. There is so much to learn about how important it is to include both the Old Testament and the New Testament. The statement that the NT is hidden in the OT and the OT is revealed in the NT. Most people sit in church and maybe even take their Bibles or attend a Bible Study and still miss that Jesus was Jewish and the disciples were Jewish and the many first converts worshiped in a Synagogue. So much Antisemitism and replacement is being taught. All that God promised His people is coming to pass daily and has been happening right before our eyes.

Lois’s books, in case you have never read one, are funny, inspiring and educating. Lois helps those who love Jesus understand Him in the land and time He came to earth. From there, the chasm between Western thought and understanding to Jewish life and thought begins to close. One thing I observed is Western thought is separated into different segments whereas Jewish thought/life is so woven together that one cannot see where Jewish life, thought, etc. begins or ends. The other observation is that there is deeper truth to discover about God, the Word, Israel and her people, which gives me a thrill learning and spending time with God.There are times I would burst out laughing at the way Lois describes a goof she made, or word picture to describe a truth. Another observation fact is the deeper truths go when reading the book with a friend and discussing the material. For me, it tends to remain better in my heart and mind in the process. While Lois’s education is impressive to say the least, she writes humbly, inspirationally, and very down to earth. Please understand this is not an academic endeavor for her, but really seeking to understand the Rabbi Jesus in all His Jewishness.For those who seek to grow closer to the Master, here is just one of the books Lois offers to help guide them on a path she remains on to this day. In other words, walking in the dust of Rabbi Jesus. Come and walk along with us. You will never regret it! Shalom!

This type of learning is a much needed view point for Christians in search of a better understanding of the Gospels. True understanding starts "in the beginning". The material contained in this book goes hand in hand with the teachings of Kenneth Bailey in his "through middle eastern eyes" series. It is very refreshing to see some of the anti-Semitic views the church has taken through the ages now becoming a major topic amongst culturally unbiased authors. Hopefully more and more authors and historians will continue to spread the truth about the closed minded prospective we unknowingly absorb as westerners. The truth is, we as Christians, have descended from our Hebrew patriarchs and to better understand our Saviour we must first understand HIS roots and accept them as our own. Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to better understand the background behind The Word.

Lois Tverberg provides some great new insights for familiar teachings of Jesus. After providing some helpful historical, linguistic and literary context information, she offers VERY relevant practical applications of these familiar passages in ways you may not have considered before. Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus has added value to my understanding of Jesus' teachings. And, the book has challenged me towards spiritual growth in important areas. I originally listened to the book on Audible.com and then decided to purchase the Kindle version. I will be using some of this book's content while teaching a grad level Hermeneutics class for Southwestern Christian University. Loved this book! I look forward to reading another of her books, Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus.

Will be reading this book over and over because I learn so much from it. Love that this is written with the time, place, and culture in mind. Helps to put me in that world and get out of this modern world thinking in order to understand more deeply what was being taught by my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Am trying to get closer to Him by understanding His Jewish way of life, what and how He thought and His world while He was on the Earth. Have purchased two of the other books in this series and look forward to learning even more.

About the Author

Rodrigo Rey Rosa was born in Guatemala in 1958. He immigrated to New York in 1980, and in 1982 he moved to Morocco. American expatriate writer Paul Bowles, with whom Rey Rosa had been corresponding, translated his first three books into English. Rey Rosa has based many of his writings and stories on legends and myths indigenous to Latin America and North Africa. Of his many works, seven have been translated into English: The Beggar’s Knife, Dust on Her Tongue, The Pelcari Project, The Good Cripple, The African Shore, Severina, and now Chaos, A Fable. He currently lives in Guatemala City.Jeffrey Gray, a professor at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, is the English translator of Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s novels The African Shore (Yale University Press, 2014) and Chaos, A Fable. He is the author of Mastery’s End: Travel and Postwar American Poetry (University of Georgia Press, 2005), as well as many articles on literature and American culture. Latin America is producing great writers. I have to disagree with the previous reviewer who didn't like this book, it is an astonishing work of literature, beautifully written, captivating and highly entertaining. It was my first book by Rey Rosa and I will definitely read more. It is exciting to me to find a writer of this caliber.

I found the characters rather one dimentional and found it difficult to follow the time - line. In other words the book itself was rather chaotic. I read it right to the but it was a struggle. I lost interest in the people and there seemed to be no story line. Three stars is very generous.

This story was very disjointed with a questionable plot line. It was difficult to maintain the readers interest throughout. I would of recommend the book to others.

A masterpiece in observation. Rodrigo Rey Rosa's starts the book with his crisp and clear writing and then as the story evolves and the characters move geographically, the story changes pace and literally takes us in speed almost into orbit. It reflects parts of my world and is a bold insight into a mad contemporary confused reality some of us maybe experiencing today. I love the humour and can only recommend you read this book "with a pinch of salt"! It is a fable after all.

Jack Hatfield is a masterful teacher. In book one he shows you a basic roll and then immediately has you playing a song. It's a great way to learn, especially for the short attention span (Oh yeah, I was typing a review). With Book 2 it's probably best to have some understanding of the banjo and basic rolls before attempting to dive into this book. It comes with a CD to hear the examples and tab instead of staff music. Gets you playing up the neck and in various keys so you're not just stuck in one position and in the key of G. I highly recommend this for anyone trying their luck learning banjo. My wife even got hooked on it.

Ok that was a corny title. We enjoy this book and its colorful illustrations. Both my three and –almost five- year olds really like it. It can be a good start to a conversation about space and planets. It is fun to read out loud and then go get other library books on the topic. In the tradition of other Dr. Seuss books it rhymes.The book is updated to have a sad reminder that Pluto is no longer in the line up and we end our naming game with Neptune. And to make it even better it is a level 2 reader and slowly but surely after several readings my son is starting to feel comfortable reading a few pages when he is in the mood. I expect that after many readings the kids will learn to name the planets without noticing. What a great addition to our kid library!

I like the book in the print version, but I was trying to encourage first graders to read Early Readers. The screens (see my pictures) were not visually engaging. They could read the words, but I know I didn't really tempt them to race to the Early Reader shelf with what they saw here!

6 yr old daughter says, "A little dull." She thinks it is better for kindergarten. She liked the topic (planets) but disliked the rhymes because they used the same words too often.

Bought for my 6 year old who was having a hard time reading. I have found these particular level 2 reader books (Step Into Reading) much easier for him to read (and sound out the words). Added bonus was that we learned a few things about each of the planets. Beautiful pictures. Fun read! How can you go wrong with a Cat in The Hat Knows A Lot About That book?!

This is an awesome book. Our toddler know all the planets now!

The repetition helps with remembering the planets.

My daughter loves this book but as a child of the 90's I struggled not having Pluto listed! Even without the dwarf planet listed this is a fantastic and entertaining read.

Fantastic. Not too big - fits on the back of any door. Ample writing space for multiple entries. Pockets super handy for invites, Bill's, etc. Bought as Christmas as gifts one year. Skipped a year and family was so disappointed!A tradition was born... just wish a few more styles were offered.

I have purchased this calendar in the past and it itself is a great product. My only complaint is delivery. When I placed my order from the beginning of January, I knew it wasn't going to be delivered until mid-February (I was willing to be patient since I really liked this calendar and I know that living in Hawaii, deliveries can be lengthy). Then I received notice that delivery was further delayed to sometime mid-March, which I felt was unacceptable. Up to 3 months would've passed before I received this calendar for a 'full price' calendar is ridiculous.

I order these calendars every year for past 7 years. They never disappoint
