This book is for programmers who are interested in learning how to use the networking interfaces in UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4). We use real-life examples to demonstrate how interfaces are used and techniques are applied. All too often in the workplace we find ourselves faced with new assignments for which we have little background. In these situations, we must educate ourselves as quickly as possible so that we can competently undertake the task at hand. Although technical manuals usually provide the information necessary to complete a task, they often lack the background, motivation, and explanation that help us to understand more clearly what we're doing and why we're doing it. Intended as a practical reference, this book contains very little coverage of theory, and details better dealt with through manual pages are omitted, although references are used liberally. It could, however, be used to complement a graduate or advanced undergraduate course in networking. As a prerequisite to reading this book, you should be familiar with the UNIX environment and the C programming language so that the examples can be understood. Some background in data structures and algorithms would be helpful, but is not required. References to SVR4 manual pages are in the running text, appearing as the command name or function name, followed by the section of the manual in which the page is found, as in open (2). Here, we are referring to the open manual page in Section 2 of the system manuals. Originally, there was only one manual for the system. With the introduction of each new release of the system, the manual grew in size until it had to be split up into separate manuals. In UNIX System V Release 3, there was one manual for users, one manual for programmers, and one manual for system administrators. In SVR4, however, the manual pages were redistributed by functional area. The user commands are no longer in a single manual, nor can you find all the programming interfaces in one place. This new organization has proven difficult to navigate by novices and experts alike. The following summary should aid in the process of locating the desired manual pages. This mechanism was provided in the 4.2 release of the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) version of the UNIX operating system from the University of California at Berkeley. With it was an implementation of the Internet protocol suite (TCP, UDP, IP, et al.). These became available in 1983.AT&T did not address standard networking interfaces in System V until 1985, when it ported Dennis Ritchie's Streams mechanism from the Version 8 Research UNIX System to UNIX System V Release 2.0p, the unreleased predecessor to System V Release 3.0 (SVR3). With the release of SVR3 in 1986, STREAMS, the framework for networking in System V, became generally available, along with the Transport Layer Interface (TLI) library. Ironically, SVR3 was released without including any networking protocols. In 1988, X/OPEN, a consortium dedicated to enhancing application portability through standards endorsements, specified its own transport layer interface library, based on AT&T's TLI library. The X/OPEN specification, called the X/OPEN Transport Interface (XTI), is effectively a superset of TLI. In 1990 the Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) committee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) created the 1003.12 working group to standardize portable networking interfaces for application programs. As of this writing, the 1003.12 working group's efforts are still underway, but it looks as though both sockets and XTI will be included in the standard.SVR4 is unique in that it includes support for many standards in one operating system. Unlike other versions of UNIX that support dual-universe environments, SVR4 provides applications with one environment consisting of features from previous versions of the System V, SunOS, BSD, Xenix, SCO, and Research UNIX systems, as well as some new features of its own. Support for POSIX 1003.1 (the system application programming interface) is also provided. The major networking interfaces provided include STREAMS, TLI, sockets, and remote procedure calls. OrganizationThe material covered in this book pertains mainly to SVR4, although some features were present in earlier releases of UNIX System V. This book is divided into four sections: background material, user-level network programming, kernel-level network programming, and a design example.Both user-level and kernel-level networking components are described to present a complete picture of network programming in UNIX System V. Although not everyone will be interested in both environments, knowledge of one environment makes programming in the other easier. Instead of just blindly following the instructions in the manuals, it enables the programmer to understand the effects of his or her actions and make better design decisions.The first two chapters provide some background that will make the rest of the book more useful to readers with less experience. More experienced readers can skip these introductory chapters without much loss of context. Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction to networking concepts, and Chapter 2 provides an overview of application programming in the UNIX System V environment. In particular, Chapter 2 contains example functions that are used throughout the rest of this text. If you skip Chapter 2, you might want to refer back to individual examples as you come across these functions in later chapters.Chapter 3 is the first chapter concerned with network programming per se. It covers the STREAMS programming environment. Since the STREAMS mechanism is the basis for most of the communication facilities in System V, understanding its services and system call interface is a prerequisite to discussing any System V networking facility.Chapter 4 covers the Transport Layer Interface library. This is the interface applications use to access the services provided by the transport layer of a computer network. Emphasis is placed on application design to support network independence.Chapter 5 describes the network selection and name-to-address translation facilities, which further extend the ability of a programmer to design network-independent applications. Chapter 6 covers the network listener process. Using the listener simplifies the design of server processes. The Service Access Facility (SAF), the administrative framework in which the listener operates, is also discussed.Chapter 7 gives a brief description of the BSD socket interface and its corresponding implementation in SVR4. The socket and TLI mechanisms are contrasted and compared. Chapter 8 discusses remote procedure calls and the external data representation used to develop distributed applications. This ends the user-level section of the text.The next four chapters are dedicated to kernel-level network programming. Chapter 9 describes the kernel environment, its utility routines, and the interfaces to the STREAMS environment. Chapter 10 describes how to write STREAMS drivers, centering around the design of a simple Ethernet driver. Chapter 11 describes how to write STREAMS modules, centering around the design of a module that can be used to emulate a terminal over a network connection. Chapter 12 describes how to write STREAMS multiplexing drivers. It uses a simple connection-oriented transport provider as a detailed example.Finally, the last section of the book, Chapter 13, covers the design of a SLIP package for SVR4, including both the user-level and kernel-level components. It illustrates the application of much from the preceding 12 chapters and, in essence, ties the book together.Much of the interesting material lies in the examples. Enjoyable read, but I thought there would be more interviews. This is more of a case study with additional interviews. I wish there had been more discussion of the dynamic definitions of trans that are emerging and what they new definitions mean.

Arlene Stein deftly reports on a group of transgender men as they go through gender-affirming treatment and in the process offers a powerful and illuminating set of analyses on the shifting nature of gender identity in our time.

Like her previous books, Professor Arlene Stein's newest exploration of women who undergo surgery as part of the transition to being/identifying as men is extremely well-written, thoughtfully analyzed, sensitively portrayed, and sociologically rich.As someone who does not have an expertise in gender identity, per se, but is deeply fascinating by the new ways in which gender is being constructed, deconstructed, challenged, innovated, and transgressed, I found this book to be deeply compelling, illuminating, thought provoking, and at times, quite disturbing.Dr. Stein follows the experiences of various individuals -- we learn about their struggles, their triumphs, their families, their relationships, their sex lives, their sense of self, the medical procedures they go through -- and thus we are treated to a set of deeply human stories. But what makes this book intellectually rich, is that weaving throughout the stories are theoretical insights and sociological ponderings about the very dynamic nature of gender and sexuality and what it means to be a man and a woman, what it means to be a lesbian, or queer, etc.And Dr. Stein brings herself into the analysis as well, reflecting on her own experiences.In sum, I learned a ton. And the book has spurred numerous conversations with family, friends, and colleagues.It is extremely timely, too. For anyone who wants to understand what the comtemporary transgender experience is all about, this book is an absolute must.

The book explores the topic of transgender men when the author meets four people born as women in the waiting room of America’s top surgeon in chest masculinization, Dr. Russell Sassani in the LGBT haven of Ft. Lauderdale. So many people born as women are having their chests masculinized in Ft. Lauderdale that a transgender couple has bought a large house and turned it into short term housing for the week male transgender chest masculinization patients need to be near their doctor for recovery and follow up care. Three of the people at the surgeon’s office will be transformed into men in one week when the bandages come off. One will remain as a woman with drastically smaller breasts. She has embraced a queer identity and will remain a woman but a less obvious one when she wishes to appear masculine. This well-written and insightful book follows their lives for a year after the surgery. Featured prominently in the book is ben from a suburb in Portland, Maine who transitions with his parents in the community where he was raised. Ben’s story is compelling with its account of activism, despair, family struggle, love, support, loss, resilience, political confrontation, and community integration. The author, Arlene Stein, writes a compelling narrative that integrates the lives of the four with her own life as an open lesbian and broadly accepted research and trends with transgender people overall. She helps the reader understand the rise of the transgender phenomenon and explores the possibility of how and why people who might have identified as gay or lesbian in previous eras are now openly modifying their bodies and developing an entirely new gender identity. Stein had unusual access to Ben’s family and personal life. It reminded me of the 1973 PBS documentary “An American Family,” that tracked a middle class family in Santa Barbara, California in 1973. The eldest son, Lance Loud, is gay and comes out to his parents in front of the filmmakers during one of the most dramatic moments of the 12-hour production. Unlike lance, Ben and the other individuals are identified by pseudonyms and their real names are not used, in fear of their own safety and security. The book has a dramatic ending, which I will not spoil, but it is worth reading the book through the afterword. This single author delivered more than what I expected in this book. She did not have a team of research assistants and a six figure budget. This would have allowed her team to hang out in the doctor’s office for several weeks to obtain 50 or more profiles and to choose more and different kinds of people from this larger pool of subjects. She also followed up in person only with Ben and maintained contact by video phone with the others. More resources would have allowed her to have a bigger pool of people and to have lengthy visits with each one in their home communities a half year and year following the surgery. Such a book would have certainly yielded a lot more information but probably not more insights and knowledge about transgender men than what is contained in the current book. I thank the author for offering this extremely timely and highly informative work.

I so appreciate many aspects of this read, and believe it does a good job of humanzing the transmasculine experience, and the experiences of family and friends of transgender folk. I don't want to discourage anyone from reading it (or listening to the Audiobook, which was my preferred format). However, I feel it's important to offer a caution based in my own viseral response. As an androsexual transmasculine person I experienced dysphoria mid-way through the book when it's focus turned almost exclusively to the relationship between transmasculine experience and lesbianism.It seems strange to me that the author would initially distinguish between gender identity and sexual orientation at a surface level, then go on to completely exclude androsexuality from the conversation. Throughout the book there was barely a passing mention of the possibility that a transman could be attracted to another man! How did this happen? I expect this has to do with the author's academic speciality and personal sexual orientation, but that rational did little to soothe my dissappointment or sense of being completely ejected from the conversation half way through the text.Folks, read the book. There's a lot of good stuff here. But, do not take away an assumption that all transmasculine folk are attracted to women. Author, if you get a chance to do a second print, please find a way to address this issue, and perhaps include the voice of at least one "gay" transman. Thank-you.

This is so sad. This book/story-line had great potential. But it doesn't get anywhere. There's no dialogue...it's all narration. There's no direction to the story. I mean, what on earth?!? I read upwards of four books a week and never...NEVER have I not finished a book. It's an OCD thing...I gotta finish a book or I feel like I'm on the verge of falling off a cliff or something. Well folks...I'm cured! I'm proud to say I got to chapter six and I think I deserve a trophy...or at the very least, a standing ovation...but I'm so bored I cannot go any further. Sorry...but I'm bored reading about a bull standing in a field with stars shining off it's back...or a copse of trees...the density of the forest...the leaves floating in a stream. Good golly. Thank heavens this was a freebie. Now I know why.

Oh, this book. I don't like giving negative reviews or feedback because writing books is difficult. But reading this book was also difficult. Let me start by saying that I did not finish this book. Its still in my Kindle and I made it about less than half of the way in. The writing is great. The story...it was confusing to me.Things that I liked about the book:-strong images via tight writing which flowed nicely-believable characters-awesome time and setting of the storyThings I did not like:-The main character being referred to simply as the "widow" instead of by her name. That actually really irritated me.-Nothing exciting happening the entire time I read. The murder happened before the book's opening, but all we see is her running from her pursuers. She doesn't struggle. She doesn't think about what's happened. As a reader, I felt completely in the dark and it ruined immersion for me.-It was difficult for me to keep going for the reasons mentioned above, so I stopped. I don't feel good about this. I like to give every book its fair shake. But this is one of few books that I just couldn't make it through.*The thing about writing reviews is that it can sway people from buying/not buying a book. I'm not saying these things to keep anyone from purchasing it. It just wasn't for me. I like stories that captivate me from the beginning and never let me go. What I read was just lines upon lines of bla bla she's running away. There is nothing mentioned about why she killed her husband. No EMOTION shown of her lamenting the loss of him and that relationship. And how did his brothers know it was her? Without a clue is how this story left me. But a lot of other reviewers seemed to like it so perhaps its just me. Best wishes to the author for much success in writing anyway.

I am a member of a book club and as 'The Outlander' came highly recommended we chose it without hesitation. But what a disappointment. I couldn't believe that a book without a plot , a beginning , middle or end could possibly span six hundred pages. I did like the style of writing used by Gil Adamson in the book and in my opinion this was the only redeeming feature. The description of the wild open spaces and the natural beauty of remote Canada was excellent, but after about 100 pages of this it became boring in the extreme. I did not enjoy this book at all as it was grey, bleak and downbeat . I was very tempted to give up about half way through, but I thought it could only improve, so I persisted to the end . And what a stupid ending ... 'Find me' .It was probably the only book that we read in the club since we started two years ago, that got such a unanimous negative response.

Afraid she was going to be a spinster, her father urges her to marry her first real suitor and she leaves her well-to-do life as a lawyer's daughter and ends up traveling to the wilds of Canada with her new husband and his twin brothers.Her life becomes hellish quickly and she soon is fleeing for her life with the twin brothers close behind. At first, she is led by instinct to survive as her mind tries to cope with her past and as she gets stronger, the chase continues as she meets different people along her journey and heads high into the Canadian Rockies.You can really feel the building of suspense page by page towards as Mary's secrets are exposed one by one. The prose is lyrical with haunting passages of the torment she endures, both emotionally and physically.This was a superior tale of one woman's fight to survive and about the unforgettable characters she meets on her journey.

First of all, this is a fantastic story about a young woman surviving and becoming stronger in the process. The setting is in rugged country in the Northwest, U.S. and western Canada. The people she meets along the way are very interesting in their own right. There are miners, horse thieves, people supporting the mining community such as a rather unorthodox preacher and an owner of the local store, a man living out on the land for years, Native Americans, a somewhat strange and kind lady, and more. Their daily life is there for you to see. The environment is described beautifully. The detail of every aspect of life in that place and time is there, yet it is not a detraction or boring. There is always the story moving right along. A totally remarkable book.

What a fascinating read. In 1903 19-year-old Mary Boulton runs from her two brothers-in-law tracking her down for the death of their brother, her husband. As Mary wanders through wilderness sometimes confused and starving she meets other wanderers, superstitious townspeople, and people who give her aid. The story slowly unravels Mary's life hinting at what drove her to flee. The harsh but beautiful still wild settings, the real-life characters and Mary's struggle for survival physically and mentally drove the story and me, the reader, to the last page.. I shut the book satisfied at having completed Mary's latest challenges right along with her.
