This diet can seem complicated at first but once you learn which products are "low Sodium" and you come up with a general meal plan, you can get more creative ! It really got my husbands Hypertension down fast ! Another bonus was he actually lost weight without trying, he ate well and liked the tasty food !

My blood pressure is slightly high and my doctor advised getting a copy of The Dash diet. I am hesitant to take medications for something I might be able to control with a change in my daily diet. The focus is on lots of fresh foods, fruits & vegetables. This book is about lower salt intake, increasing potassium etc though foods rather than pills. The book includes food lists recommended, and many recipes as well. Seems that it may also have a positive effect on cholesterol too, although that is not addressed to any extent in the book. Looking forward to lower numbers at next check up.If you have high blood pressure and want to avoid taking prescription meds, I think this book is well worth the $8

This is a very informative book about blood pressure and the things it can do to your body. I/ve found that some drs will not explain all the things high blood pressure can do...they just say you've got high blood pressure, hand you a pill and say I'll see you in 6 weeks. Don't like taking pills, I need some info that we help me to live a healthier life. This book is good, straightforward and easy to understand. It repeates over and over again the effects of a high bp. But they go on to explain how they did surveys and studies on people (monitered them closely) and found and interesting results with the diet (food modification) these people were on. They also have menus (certain combination of foods working together) that is to help you lower the bp. I realize that exercise is not left out of the equation either. I'm borderline...and I'm heading back from the border and in a hurry!:-)

A fantastic book! Grounded in scientific research and analysis, this diet is great for anyone who seeks balance and healthy blood pressure levels. I highly recommend this book.

Well, mine was one of those very very very difficult cases for physicians. In fact in my family has been a tradition of very high blood pressures. I have been sort of a buddhist meditator for years in the aim to help my high blood pressure, and I look in Taoism to see if I could find any help for it. Almost three or four weeks ago I received my manual to lower my blood pressure in 14 days. The main problem I had with it was that I had to translate the 67 recipes into spanish, as I live in Colombia, South America, so I just tried to resume the philosophy of the DASH diet, insisting in more fruits, vegetables, less red meat, very very very little sodium and much more dairy products than we usually do.I decided to order the Dash diet manual the day I had a very severe crisis of blood pressure, 200/120, very early in the morning, even though I had been taking the days before maximum dosis of drugs for hyper tension prescribed by my physician. So just use it if you have high blood pressures, and you will see the results by yourself!!! It really works! Now I am just taking one drug, and my aim is to take none, as I had to suspend another maximum dosis of drug with dangerous side effects, as for the first time in my life I had a low blood pressure crisis.

My doctor ordered me to get this book. I didn't realize how old it was but the message is still just as relevant today as when it was published. This explained the way my blood pressure works, how to understand the numbers and how to get it in check. It also contains many meal ideas and recipes. The difference between it and a new book is that it still suggests using a diet soda or drink at your meals. Most of today's books caution against them.Anyway I'm very happy with it and would suggest it to anyone.

I am not a fan of prescription drugs if I can find a healthier and risk-free alternative. So when my blood pressure started climbing (was hitting 165/95 pretty regularly) at age 67, and my doctor wanted me to start on BP meds, I asked for alternative suggestions. He gave me a little flyer that referenced the DASH Diet. I did further research and found this book. I started modifying my diet along the lines book recommends, but not in a very strict way. The book also recommends a low salt diet, which I follow to the best of my ability, but do not cut out salt completely. My blood pressure within a month dropped back to about 120-124/67-80. I am sure that if I followed the book more strictly, it would be even lower. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Buy it and follow it. You'll be very glad you did!

The DASH Diet for Hypertension has been thoroughly tested and approved by the people who know. If you have high blood pressure, this book is a "Must-Read", and once you've read your copy from the library, you're going to want to purchase your own copy for continuing reference. It tells you everything you need to know about cooking with or without salt and how to avoid foods that contain excessive amounts of sodium. It's refreshing to realize that by balancing your diet properly you can even have salt and still lower your blood pressure!Plus - there's a double bonus! Those who tested and worked on this cookbook discovered that it also tends to lower your cholesterol and helps you lose weight! While they were testing, they found that in order to keep the study accurate, with no other changes in lifestyle, they actually had to adjust calorie intake in order to keep participants from losing weight!I could go on and on, but just read the book. You'll see what I mean.

Whenever I pick up a Sophie Kinsella book, I know certain things. I know the heroine will be fun and interesting and a little chaotic. I know I will laugh. Then, before I know it, I am so caught up emotionally I can hardly breathe. In this book, I had to reassure myself that she wouldn’t take me too far over the edge. She surprised me with the ending. Though I had a suspicion about where it might go, I didn’t see it coming at all. But boy oh boy, was it ever satisfying! There’s a formula to Kinsella’s books, and yet they never feel formulaic. She has a way of keeping things fresh, even though her path is a familiar one. I absolutely loved it.I realize I have written nothing about the plot or the characters. I don’t need to. Read the book. You won’t be sorry.

I don't like to give bad book reviews, and Surprise Me wasn't bad... but it wasn't great. I had to really force myself to keep on reading because it just didn't hold my interest. I almost felt like Sophie Kinsella has regressed with her writing skill, or perhaps she had to force herself to keep on writing and her heart wasn't really in it. I even put it down and read another book in the middle of Surprise Me, which is unheard of for me with a Sophie Kinsella title. My main issue with this book is that it seemed like a lot of different bits glued together. It was disjointed. It dragged in parts. Certain points were given loads of coverage then disappeared so that I forgot about them, only to think later on 'Was that from another book, oh, it was from this book'. Then that long-forgotten part of the story would come back with full force. The premise was thin and drawn out and the main characters seemed immature.I persevered though, a) because I have enjoyed most of Sophie's others books, and b) because I'd paid for it. There's nothing like feeling like you have wasted your money to want to continue. And I am happy to say that the end of the book was satisfying. I'd still give it three stars even with the good ending and would only recommend you read it if you are a die-hard Sophie Kinsella fan.

Happily married husband and wife are told they are in peak physical condition and will probably live another 68 years together. Their reaction? What the hell are we going to do with each other for that long? So they try to surprise each other to keep the relationship fresh. This book was silly and lame. It was as light as a giant vat of cotton candy. In my world, if you have to come up with surprise moves for your spouse, then you aren’t really connected. How exhausting. PS: I’ve been married for 40 years. It’s not perfect but it’s perfectly okay and I adore him.IG: @bookbimbo

I've read all of her books and I'm not quite sure why they are so many bad reviews. While it was not as funny to me as, for example, the Shopaholic series, I still found it to be an interesting book that I did not have to spend pages trying to get into and found it easy to maintain interest until the end. While not as funny, I found her writing in this novel to be a little more profound and down to earth, well, as much as a Sophie Kinsella book is able to be at this point. It's certainly different than many of her past works and I'm OK with watching her evolve as a writer. Well,as long as she throws out one of her hilarious books now and then.I felt that you can gain some insights into the amount of respect and understanding that you have to continually strive for in order to sustain a long term marriage. At over 30 years into it myself, it seemed to me that she was able to show Sylvie and Dan learning to grow and adapt to the constantly changing requirements and needs of both your marriage as well as your partner. It seemed to me that her lighthearted attempt to showcase this kept the novel interesting yet not too preachy as another author may have done.So while it is a humorous attempt, it still does make some valid points to take away with you after the last page.

I really enjoyed Surprise Me. I've enjoyed every book Sophie Kinsella has written, and this was no exception. The reason I took one star off was that I wish more time was spent at Willoughby House, with Clarissa, Robert and Mrs. Kendrick. I also thought the surprises that backfired were hilarious, particularly the boudoir photos. But it got really serious abruptly after that. And I notice that Kinsellla has a type of formula for most of her books, in which the female protagonist gets heartbroken because of a major misunderstanding, and doesn't see the light till it's almost too late. This is certainly true with Sylvie. And the ending always resolves itself so well that it would be unrealistic in real life. Despite these flaws, I recommend this book for any Kinsella fan.

I've read every single book from Sophie Kinsella (some of them multiple times) and LOVE her work! Surprise Me is a fun, delightful read, and I (like many reviewers here) loved the main character's eccentric, quirky, sweet workplace. This book didn't seem to unfold as naturally as some of her other books, but is still a light and enjoyable read with a happy ending.

This book is boring and I usually love Sophie Kinsella's books. This one just doesn't work for either and I can't even finish it.

This book was boring and felt forced almost from the beginning. The essential themes: the issue of how to keep one's marriage interesting, the issue of dealing with grief, and the realities of learning one's human idol has feet of clay -- the last two being tied together. Well, none of them meshed well and the whole thing felt disjointed and I was pulled out of each story line awkwardly to then need to be reminded of the details of the other. The humor felt forced and wasn't really that amusing. And finally the heroine was annoyingly clueless and I soon began to just be irritated rather than amused or touched. This book felt as if the author was melding two draft stories that hadn't worked out individually.Though the themes could have been interesting, this book just fell flat on all fronts. I'd skip it.

I had heard of the Golden Ratio, but didn't really know much about it before reading this illustrative coffee table book. I'm not a mathematician and some of it is over my head, but I found it intriguing and look forward to finding where it occurs in my daily life. It is especially interesting to see the examples of it being used in ancient architecture and contrasting that with the modern design of an Aston Martin DB9! Also, found the section about beauty and The Golden Ratio captivating. It's interesting that the human brain perceives beauty as closely following the ratio.I enjoyed the "The Golden Ratio" and all the interesting research and illustrations the author has compiled. It's also a very nice hardcover book at a reasonable price that looks great sitting on a coffee table. It is definitely a conversation starter!

I personally have a strong interest in the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci sequence, originating with my degree in engineering and a core curriculum in liberal arts. More recently, I have taken a keen interest in Fibonacci applications in technical trading. I was originally drawn to this particular book by the artwork of Rafael Araujo, which is featured on the cover and throughout, as well as the work of Gary Meisner, whose public research available on his website I consider to be the benchmark for interest on the subject. The Golden Ratio greatly exceeded my expectations. The pictures and imagery used throughout the book are simply magnificent; absolutely stunning in areas. This book is both text book and coffee table book; the production is of the highest quality. It is comprehensive and well-written, yet not so difficult as to be rendered inaccessible to the ordinary reader. For the price, this book is an absolutely tremendous value and far and away my favorite new addition on the subject.

IF you are just curious about how nature, art and architecture (ancient and modern), graphics, balance and so much of the world around us, and how our psyches are influenced by this number/ratio/natural phenom then for gosh sakes spend the paltry sum to get this book! I would really expect such a finely illustrated, well written tome like this to be $75. - so get it before the author and publisher realize their mistake. The explanations are light enough for even a non-mathmatician to understand - (yes, you can skip the few equations and still get a very thorough understanding of the subject). If you're a math teacher - say at middle-school level and above - DO get this book, and DO teach this to your students! Hey, artists and architects learned this concept 500+ years ago! Art, architecture and engineering teachers - your students need this book and the subject it teaches!I am just floored about how good this book is on this subject, and how really beautiful it is.

This is a lovely book which explains and examines the Golden Ratio/Divine Proportion using clear and engaging text accompanied by a kaleidoscopic array of beautiful imagery from the worlds of art, architecture, and nature. This book is sure to be appreciated by anyone who loves math, design, or classical art, as well as by those who are merely curious about the title topic.I am one who was merely curious. I haven't studied any math since high school (eons past), but I was able to grasp (with a bit of concentration) the very basic of the mathematical concepts presented in this book. I was actually quite pleased with myself when I encountered and even remembered the Pythagorean Theorem on page 27! While most of the mathematics in the book was over my head, I nevertheless found much to like in its pages. For example, nearly 100 pages are devoted to a presentation of the appearance of the Divine Proportion in art and architecture. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the masterworks of DaVinci, Michelango, Botticelli, and more, and seeing evidence of the Golden Ratio in these famous art pieces. I was especially drawn to a section of the book which focuses on the design and construction of the great cathedrals of Europe. Photographs (with PhiMatrix overlays) of the rose windows at Notre Dame and Chartes are impressive and, of course, very beautiful. The last part of the book takes a look at the appearance of the Divine Proportion in the natural world. Again, I am not a mathematician, but I had fun counting the plant spirals on photographs of pine cone bases, and looking for the "beauty of fives" in pictures of flowers and fruits.Overall, I enjoyed spending time in the pages of this book. It has something for everyone. And, it looks pretty impressive on my coffee table; if I were hunting a mate, I might impress a super successful STEM dude—or perhaps an artsy guy--with this book!

I knew Gary in a previous life as a tireless number cruncher, spreadsheet guru and meticulous CFO. When I received my copy of The Golden Ratio I was so impressed by his ability to combine his known financial talents and insights of numbers with a flair for visual appeal. This is a book that draws you in with the beautifully illustrated pages and is one that you will be proud to display on your coffee table and to have in your library. Fusion genius. Well done!

As a photographer and art educator, I have been interested in the Golden Section for many decades. It has informed my own work as well as that of my pedagogy. The Golden Ratio is one of the best and most accessible summations of the expression of phi in art, architecture and nature I have come across. Gary Meisner makes the mathematical foundation of this proportion accessible to laymen whether non-mathematicians or non-art historians, and the beautiful illustrations serve to make clear the way in which this proportion has manifested itself throughout the natural world and human history.

Well-written, well-researched and a powerful argument for the need for a federal program to support care at home for all generations, in particular for the coming "age wave" of aging boomers. With those age 65 and older reaching 16% of our population by the year 2020, we will need new public systems to support care, similar to those in countries such as Germany and Japan, where their elder populations reached 16% twenty years ahead of us in the U.S. "The Age of Dignity" is also unusual in its focus on the importance of supporting the rights and higher wages of home care workers, and in its support of generous policies for immigration, as our skyrocketing need for at-home care will require both. An easy and hopeful read.--Author, "Inside the Dementia Epidemic: A Daughter's Memoir"

This woman is a genius and a pathbreaker to a shared future of support for caregivers. Cogent argument for better government support for hired caregivers, higher wages, and paths to professional skill-building and advancement. Supports expansion of the PACE program, which keeps frail seniors at home. Building a coalition between frail elders, their adult children, and the lifesaving hired caregivers who help keep them happy at home. This is holy and relational work, and should be honored as such. She's brilliant, because she understands this can't be framed as a "workers vs. management" issue.

I’m a homecare RN.The Age of Dignity is a clarion call, pointing not just to the impending crisis of Aging America, but to the heroines and heroes who are already guiding the most vulnerable among us to safety and dignity. It is to Ai-jen Poo’s great credit that she came to the problem of caring for elderly Americans 14 years ago, before it had even occurred to most of us that the Baby Boomers were going to grow old en masse. That long-term familiarity is clearly evidenced in the wide scope of strategies she explores. Rather than pointing to a panacea, Ms. Poo knows that only a mosaic of creative and dedicated solutions will offer success in tackling what will surely be the greatest social policy challenge of the first half of this century. And even more inspiring, Ms. Poo understands that this struggle will ultimately be won not by policy, but by the women who actually devote their hearts and lives to caring, day after day, for our elderly and frail. This book, then, is not ultimately Ms. Poo’s story: it is the story of the skilled and loving women she brings so vividly to life from the pages of The Age of Dignity.

The Age of Dignity takes a refreshing look at the issues - and solutions - our aging, multi-cultural society face. Through the power of story-telling, Ai-jen Poo puts human faces on the seemingly intractable issues of long term care and caregiving in the United States. The beauty of this work is that the answers are laid out before us: connect the needs of an aging (and disabled) population with the needs of a growing workforce that cries out for basic labor rights, education and training. "Dignity" and "care" are not exclusive concepts - we all need them. Poo shows us a way to get there.

Great first book. I like that she is Asian American and involved in a critical policy intersection of labor and care for elders with disability. She shies away from what separates home care from more skilled home health and personal care, a key factor in discussions of training & skill needed and pay. Otherwise She raises the most critical issues. Good read. I have recommended to many academic researchers & wonks

It's kind of a hard slog, but so important. Having cared for my own mother and my mother-in-law as they aged (to 93 years old respectively) this is a subject that is important to me -- at age 78, with my husband 81. We all have much to learn about caring for or overseeing the care of an aging loved one. I haven't gotten too far into the book; but I hope she also deals with adult financial abuse, with which I am very familiar. I am currently preparing to testify at the criminal trial of a man who ripped off a close friend after she trusted him to be her power of attorney.

This is a very timely and important book that brings together the challenges we face in immigration, creating skilled jobs, addressing the needs of both the "sandwich" generation and the booming (and aging) Baby Boomers. Articulate, engaging and strategic, Ai-Jen Poo makes the case for a "caring economy." She skillfully uses storytelling to demonstrate where we are, what's coming, and where solutions are that can address all these personal and societal problems at the same time, in a humane, cost-effective way that provides dignity for all (the caretakers, the families who hire caretakers, and those who need care--that's pretty much ALL of us!). As she says, it's her intention to create a culture that "embraces the joys and complexities of aging, celebrates multigenerational relationships, and values care work--THE WORK THAT MAKES ALL OTHER WORK POSSIBLE."

Great book. It offers practical steps to help all Americans age with dignity. But much work needs to be done, however, that work will create millions of jobs. We must uplift the caregivers' image, salaries and conditions. Also, we must regain our inter-generational ties to make this all happen--otherwise, we shall have a fearful, perhaps, even impoverished elderly population. So we can all benefit by lifting each other up--young getting paid to support the old while the wisdom of elders can help the young with time-sharing et al. Fantastic author! She gets my vote. And I hope she's able to see her dreams come true for America! This is a 'must read' by anyone who can read! Our future is at stake without taking her book to heart.

As a lover of manga, webcomics, comic books and more I wanted a different art style and I found it. The style was immaculate and the story was easy to follow. I bought this 9 book series for about 36 dollars, I blindly bought it without looking into the art style or authors background. Which I don't EVER do, unless the series is highly recommended. I had only read the summary and immediately wanted to buy it. I'd like to thank the author for being able to read this and I'm happy it was complete.

it feels like they missed something IDK... i know why they ran away but it's like the development of the story or should I say the ending was missing some kind of explanation... but the manga is so well draw I had to give them 4 stars. It's a series of 9 books but amazon doesn't have volume 7 I think. it's skips to volume 8 and then 9 just FYI.

Fabulous series - buy all books at once, you won't regret it. I hope to find more written by Kyungha Yi.

I picked this up not because of the blurb, but a blog that made the book sound like it could be more interesting than the typical shifter story. It came off as a more urban fantasy style than a paranormal book. I was hoping for an urban fantasy.I was wrong on all accounts.First, there were some weird grammatical issues that caused me to go back and reread to make sure I was following correctly. There were also some proofing issues but not many. The blurb could lead someone to believe that the story is a dual, 3rd person POV, but it is a single, 1st person POV only. We only ever get Seb’s limited, extremely repetitive POV.Second, the use of tropes. Tropes are not a bad thing, they let the reader understand what kind of story they are in. The problem comes when the tropes are cliches. That’s what happened here. Cliche galore. The author tried to use older tropes that are currently not the trend, but the execution was horrible. The lack of communication trope was used, overused, quite a lot. It got old fast because it was with Seb and *everyone* he interacted with. The other cliched trope was that the werewolf embodiment was a curse. It was a bite most did not survive, and a constant battle between the wolf and the man. The twist on the trope has been used before and better, but the main problem lay in the world built around this one small aspect. While the bite is a curse, and most everyone dies, you still have packs building up and parents willing to kill their children to have them go through this transition. This is not something the were’s avoid trying to do to others, but par for the course without a real reason as to why they would take those risks. In short, the logic and reasoning does not make sense for the building of packs and this curse. The world has magic and alchemy, Fae, vampires and others. We get more of the magic than anything else. There is a poorly constructed, cobbled together explanation for the alchemy. We meet one Fae, no vampires and none of the others really. There is constant *referencing* to these others beings and world aspects, so they are talked around and never developed fully. We are stuck in Seb’s limited POV that is confused quite often, which gets old. The world is supposed to be this fully developed fantastical place and it falls short. In other problematic world-building issues, the author drops the ball on some things. One is the age issue for the weres. At one point we get that the Volkov could be at least a thousand years old, then Seb references that the Volkov did a study where weres only lived twenty years after their bite and vampires fifty. That’s shoddy writing. Is that because they go mad and die? If he and the few children of his that survived the bite (again, why would you bite them if they’ve got a 1% chance of surviving) could live hundreds of years, why did everyone else die so soon? No explanation is developed. If an old trope is being used, try to have it make sense and do something interesting with it. Then there is how the alchemy words differently than the magic, and how that structure actually works. There are references to equivalent exchanges but it never goes anywhere beyond tinctures. Another problem is the slapped together explanation for Seb, it’s cobbled together approach is barely addressed and more is left open to question than an explanation as to his nature.Which also brings us to the third issue of the cover and Seb. Seb is supposed to be half Native American, a quarter black, and a quarter Japanese who was abandoned by his half-black, half-Japanese mother because of his nature. The representation - he often describes how he does not like being a 'mixed' child - is cringeworthy. But don’t you know his white mate is the gorgeous one? The erotification of the multiracial character left a bad taste in my mouth.Lastly, some of the depictions of a domestic abuse survivor were done well, but the (magic) sex with mate thing was sigh worthy. There were some 'how do we handle this’ moments but they were clumsy and cliched. Also, the thing with Nicky, which I can’t get into without major spoilers. If that was properly addressed I missed it. It should’ve been resolved in this book, or at least addressed and not forgotten because that played a major role later on.So, all-in-all, choppy world-building and inconsistencies in the story, with repetitiveness that got old because it was talking not showing, made this a hard read because the world logic did not make sense and made it difficult for me as reader to want to finish. I will not be looking for the next book in this series. And, as a another reviewer pointed out, this is a pale imitation of Patricia Brigg’s werewolf series.

This was a pretty decent read. What kept it from being more highly rated is the fact that a good portion of the characters seem to be lifted straight from Patricia Brigg's werewolf series. An overall alpha who takes in the disturbed and those waiting to die, who has a monster inside (the author even references Beowulf). An oldest son who is strong and a financial wizard, another son who is a doctor, the adopted child who isn't a wolf, the alpha love interest with a teenaged daughter... I won't be purchasing any further books by this author.

I was very close to giving this book 5 stars. I loved the story. It was a new and interesting take on the shifter genre. I really liked Sebastian and Liam. I liked how Liam treated Sebastian and how patient he was with him. The only thing stopping me giving this story a higher rating was the fact that the author left one glaring question that wasn’t answered by the end of the book. It upset me that after a certain point in the story it wasn’t brought up again. It’s bugging me to no end that I don’t know the status of the character in question. I’m really hoping that the author writes more in this series. I would love to get another book from Sebastian’s point of view and hopefully, she’ll clear up some of the dangling plot points.

Ok I wanted to like this book but I kept wanting to compare it to noveles by Patricia Briggs. I like this author and was disapointed that this story seemed to lift too many concepts from the other novels... non-wolf shifter dropped off by mom (dad dead) to head of the werewolves in the US to raise as his own. The wild child was well known for prankds. The father figure a powerful an ancient shifter trying to keep his beast under control. Unhappy romance with the son of the alpha that leads to the protagonist to run away and feel alone. Love interest another alpha wolf with a human daughter and a gay second (who is dating a human) and ends with a mobile home and cat in the backyard of the pack house. The omega is needed to bring the head alpha back from his beast ... so yes, too many plot comparisons for me. One or two items could be part of any story... but so many? The small changes (like being an alchemist) needed expansion. The kitsume part started to be explored near the end of the story. The bakery and was a nice touch and they used it heavily throughout the story as part of the relationship. I really enjoyed the vision the two had of the unfinished bread as the pack structure and the alpha as the baker.

Beyond Muesli and Fondue: The Swiss Contribution to Culinary History, by Martin Dahinden

From the Author

Before my wifeAnita and I came to Washington in 2014 and assumed our role as an ambassadorialcouple, we asked ourselves the question, "How do we want to portray Switzerlandfrom the culinary standpoint at the countless events at the Swiss Residence inthe United States?"  There is nothingwrong with our country's simple dishes. Bratwurst, Raclette, Fondue,Birchermüesli and Rösti are firmly established and are expressive politicalsymbols. But do they reflect Switzerland with its excellent gastronomy, thecountry with the most Michelin Guide stars per capita and our importantcontributions to culinary history? Do they draw attention to what Switzerlandis: one of the most innovative and global countries in the world with a strongeconomy and a world-wide presence through its quality products and well-knownbrands? Since we could notfind any book that suited our purpose, I went in search of stories andanecdotes about dishes, chefs, bakers, and gastro-nomes. It was an exciting andproductive search. I came upon the story of the most important chef of theRenaissance, who came from Ticino, the first woman who ever wrote a cookbook, the tragic fate of a man who arranged splendid banquets for the Sun King, andpioneers of the hotel business and of industrial food production. I found outabout Napoleon's chef, the founders of the legendary Delmonico's Restaurant inNew York, a revolutionary who wrote a monumental culinary dictionary and beganto organize his colleagues into groups throughout the world. I found out howSwiss confectioners and chocolate producers made a name for themselves abroad, that a Swiss man ran the first American Bar in Europe, and a resourceful mindfrom Ticino invented the ice cream cone. In Washington, I met a Swiss ExecutiveChef who worked for five American presidents in the White House. Swiss cuisine isrich in anecdotes which connect the country's political history with itsculinary history and say a great deal about the character-istic features ofSwitzerland. The result of my research is "Beyond Muesli and Fondue. The SwissContribution to Culinary History". But what was mostimportant were the many events at the Swiss Resi-dence in Washington whichserved as the stage for those stories and dishes. American guests immediatelyfound them interesting and they also became a local conversation topic.Individual dinners were devoted to great Swiss chefs with recipes from theirtime, from the Renaissance, through the Baroque, Empire and Belle Époqueperiods to the present day. Events were underpinned with culinary creations, for example, the event on the opening of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel, thepresentation of the Tell Award to Claude Nicollier, the only Swiss astronaut upto now, and events promoting the Festival del film Locarno and the MontreuxJazz Festival, occasion when we hosted George Lazenby, the one-time James Bondfrom On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and at many lunches and dinners forAmerican guests. Why are events andtheir messages so much more effective if they are reinforced by culinarycreations? The answer is simple: because eating and drinking appeal to all thesenses at the same time.  "Beyond Muesli andFondue" is a cookbook with cultural history texts which invites readers tofollow the recipes. The eyes, nose, palate, and stomach are invited to go on anexploration trip while taking a journey through time.

Excellent research with fascinating stories. The recipes are accessible and delicious.

Culinary diplomacy at its best! This book is such an interesting read and truly provides surprising information about Switzerland's rich culinary heritage and the broad influence it has had on American cuisine "Beyond Muesli and Fondue." It was a fun read and trying to cook these recipies proved to be a delicious experience stimulating mind and body. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about the fascinating culinary carpet woven together by Switzerland and the United States.

Delightful recipes and cocktails presented in their historical context. This book expanded my understanding of Swiss food, beyond the traditional dishes with which most people are familiar. More than just a cookbook, this book also offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of an ambassador, with recipes and menus that are prepared for diplomatic guests, and reflections on the importance of food and cuisine in diplomacy.
