James Hoare spent over thirty years in the British Diplomatic Service, with postings to Seoul and Beijing.  His last job was Chargé D’Affaires in Pyongyang, North Korea, where he established the British Embassy. Since retirement, he has become a regular radio and television commentator on Korea, and he also teaches at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. I bought this book before my first trip to Korea in June 2015 and found it helpful. It seems a bit outdated but I don't blame the author because things in Korea have changed and are changing very quickly.In particular, this includes culture and customs. While many things are traditional, there are many changes and Koreans are very accepting of your differences especially if they know that you are not Korean and you are in a place where finding a non-Korean is not surprising, like in Seoul, in a tourist venue (even those with almost all Koreans) and in a city with an American military base. I recommend to anyone traveling to Korea who would like a quick read into what to expect. The coverage given to North Korea was too extensive for me because I traveled only to South Korea. I had the benefit of having bilingual friends accompany us on many days of our trip of 4 days in Seoul and 8 days in Gunsan as well as my American brother in law who lives there, has a Korean GPS and drove us where we needed to go. I also recommend that travelers learn a little Korean like hello, thank you, where is the restroom, please help me, where is it and a little Korean pronunciation of place names. Korean people are happy to help you find something if you ask but they must understand what you are asking for. We took the Tiger Seoul City Bus Tour for $12 (W12,000) and it drops you off and picks you up on a circuit every half hour. I highly recommend it but it is not obvious sometimes where something is. Sometimes you are dropped off at a palace and it is obvious where the palace is but sometimes it drops you off at a shopping area and it just looks like any other street. The market may be just 200 or 300 meters away but you cannot see it from the bus stop so you have to ask the driver (who speaks little English) or a passerby where the market it and you have to make a passable try at pronouncing the name. Good reading and good luck.

This is JUST what it purports to be....a condensed version of objective (and relatively accurate--based on publication date) cultural information. Perfect read for your air flight en route to your destination. It makes understanding and anticipating the culture much easier. (and i have purchased a number of different countries from this series.)

Very informative little book. Lots of information that is well organized and detailed. I really like the mini size of this book; it fits perfectly in my bag or a pocket.

A thorough and extremely helpful book, makes me wish I had one when I was in Korea in 1980-1981. I have recommended it to others, and will continue to do so.

I have enjoyed this book and will recommend it to others. I learned a lot about the Korean people and their country. It is a beautiful country and the Korean people are very kind after all they have been through. I was very surprised about some of the things they have had to endure. The book teaches you how to behave when you meet the Korean people and teaches you how much they have suffered. I was very saddened about how much the older generation of Koreans suffered while growing up. I would like to visit Korea very much. Thank you for such a beautiful book about Korea.

I bought this book to learn about mummies with my first graders. That is NOT an easy subject to teach with such little children, as you're talking about dead people. It all started when they asked, "Are mummies real?" I replied with the truth, "Well, yes, but they're not monsters that chase you around going, 'Whoooooo!'" And thus began my search for an age-appropriate, non-fiction book about mummies. Let me assure you, that doesn't exist. However, that being said, with lots of stopping for commentary and answering questions, this was really good. Some were scared, some were grossed out, almost all were fascinated. And you're dealing with ancient religious beliefs, so at one point, I had to tell them, "That is a good question. People believe different things. You should ask you parents what they believe." One little girl told me after I finished reading, "This is kind of disgusting, but it's also kind of interesting." I could've hugged her on the spot. It's probably very different if you're reading it one-on-one with your child, but when you're tackling a room full of little, eager minds, this is a pretty good place to start. I recommend it, but be prepared to stop along the way to explain things, ask questions, and answer questions. I also recommend having additional non-fiction books for them to browse, but this was the best I found to actually read to them.

My 1st grader was intrigued with the Mummies ever since they studied them in school. I wanted something educational but interesting and this was definitely it. He was even ahead of the game when the teacher went over how they mummify because he had seen the steps in the book!

I bought this as a gift for my 7 year old nephew, who is fascinated with mummies. He loved it.

We can't say enough good things about the entire National Geographic Kids books, my 4 year old son loves these. We wanted to get him interested in science early and he always goes back to these books. So far, I think we purchased 6 of the series and he loves them all.

I love these books they have vocabulary, large print and are challenging without being frustrating. They also teach a great deal about the subject.

My 5 year old loves this book but I cant figure out why because the pictures are kind of gross. I would not have thought that this kind of book would be a good book for kids but it is well written and very educational. So for now I am stuck reading this book and having to look at the pictures every night.

I bought several of this books for my children, they love them so much that they have now a big collection, and I love the fact that they actually read them and are learning a lot, they come with different reading levels for each child reading skills.

My five year old son loves this book. He's asked for it for over a year and we finally gave in and let him read it, worried that it would be a bit scary. Not so. He's fascinated by it, it's educational, and easy to understand as well as interesting. Great book.

I got this book along with “Net oF Beimg” for my boyfriend on our anniversary, I am so excited. As I stated in my review for that book, I just went through and placed sticky notes within the pages of art that means something to us personally. This book has information on Tool as well which is an added bonus!

I really thought there would be a lot more artwork in this book but there isn't much. Mostly it's descriptions of the meaning of the art, what inspired it, where it's currently displayed, etc... I thought this book was basically like a coffee table book - just photographs of art. I was tad disappointed when I discovered there weren't many photos.

My husband is hard to shop for. He doesn't make lists and doesn't ask for anything. He loves the band "Tool" and had showed me the artwork they included in liner notes and for merch. I looked up the artist and purchased this book for him. He never reads unless its on his phone and in had a good time watching him sit on the porch with a book. He really enjoyed admiring the artwork in this book and we keep it out as a coffee table book now, too. Beautiful works of art that are great conversation starters. If you have kids around and they happen to take a peek, be prepared to hear giggles over the anatomy drawings. ;)

I was a bit surprised to find that this was a fairly random collection of art from this artist. Commentators made some attempt to bring some coherence to the collection, but it felt like quite a reach. Out of the collection, only about 6 of the works felt like they were truly elevated. The rest just felt like quirky dabbling in one technique after another. But those 6 works certainly warrant at least 3 stars.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful book! Not much more to say here... A gorgeous display of a genius artist. I ended up writing one of the quotes from this book on the chalk board wall in my house. My five year old son loves to look at the artwork in this book and I can explain things to him on a higher level while he can look at a gorgeous depiction of a very complex concept. This is not a book for children, however... Supervision is most definitely advised!

For many years as an artist I have studied Alex's art and although I do not agree with everything he puts forth along with his art - this book is a classic. Very few have the type of insights he has and fewer the ability to put meaning into their artwork showing a greater picture than the art alone. It is no wonder why many musicians and artists enjoy what he has produced and continues to create. There really is something for every artist or creative soul to enjoy in this book. It is a great value for what he gives.

This is the most amazing art book. In the central part of the book, Alex Grey presents the human being layer by layer. Starting with the skeleton, he adds the nervous & circulatory systems, the viscera, the musculature, and finally the skin. Materialist would stop there. But Alex Grey has the eyes of a mystic, and continues to depict the etheric & energetic components of humanity, right up to the Void of pure consciousness. He also includes deities from east & west, showing that they too "mirror" what we are in our depths. Many of the later frames are suitable as objects of meditation. The most talented energy-healer I know seems to know everything about people just by looking at them, and she says what she sees is what Alex Grey paints. This book contains art that can put a person in touch with her deepest and noblest possibilities. This book is nothing less than a gift to the human race!

I always wanted an Alex Grey book. I seem to end up at the book store often whist tagging along. I don't purchase much from pshysical stores. Prices are always better on the internet. Whenever I'm in the book store I will stare at some pretty interesting books for hours. Once in a while there will be some that stick out and I just can't stop thinking about it!!!! I purchased this off Amazon while I was drunk hehehehe *red face* I'm absolutely so happy that I did. This book is one in which...I can look at...over and over and over and over and over. I now plan to buy a few more with his work.

We used this during our little adult only side trip while in Europe on vacation. Small, insightful and just what we needed to get around Crete without a tour guide. It informed us that Cretans use the shoulder on the highway just like another lane. Unwritten rule: slower traffic "has" to move to the shoulder, so the faster cars can pass them. If not, you'll have someone glued to your rear bumper on the single lane highway the entire trip.

I should copy and paste my plaudits for the DK travel guides, because they are uniformly splendid in their informativeness and maps, photos, and diagrams. Read this, plan your trip accordingly, and GO!

This book is a perfect size for travelers, it fits nicely in a pocket, but in shrinking the size, the publishers shrank the type as well, to the point where it is difficult to read.More serious is the lack of organization -- much of the information is redundant and poorly classified. It appears to have been thrown together without much editing.For larger cities, these defects would render it unacceptable, but it is difficult to find good travel books on Crete, and the content is better than most, which is why I rated it 3 stars.

Exactly what we need for our trip. We always plan ahead and like to know what to expect. This is perfect.

This will be my fourth trip to Europe in as many years nearly exclusively using a Rick Steves book for guidance. Rick Steves books are excellent for the traveler going to a place for the first time, who needs some real advice, that is, a well informed opinion, as to where to go and what to see. Rick Steves is knowledgeable,experienced, well-informed, intelligent and has excellent judgement. No guidebook is all things to all people. Lonely Planet guides are crammed with more information and are more comprehensive, but are in my opinion intimidating and boring for a first timer - they simply have too much information which a first-timer is ill-equipped to wade through and evaluate. I get information overload from them. If you are travelling someplace for the first time and need a guidebook to help form an itinerary, go with Rick Steves.

The title is misleading. The book ignores significant regions of Spain and instead includes Morocco. For example, if you are are planning to visit Valencia or other cities in the east coast of Spain you will not find any information at all.

This is a fantastic guidebook for travel nerds. I say that because to use the guidebook properly, you must read it ahead of time and annotate it as needed. I read much of it before I left, marking pages with notes, stickers, flags and post-its. I used binder clips to separate chapters of places I had no time to visit. I must admit that I walked around Spain with my finger holding a section of the book open much of the time, referring to one of Rick's tours or finding a restaurant in our area. This book accompanied us through Barcelona, Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Madrid. My daughters kept it for their upcoming trips to Toledo, Segovia, El Escorial and more. Having Rick's restaurant advice was a great way to have a good overall experience. I think he favors restaurants that cater to travelers and treat them patiently; the food ranges from excellent to pretty good. While you can also use trip advisor or another site for restaurants, I prefer to find his tried and true favorites.This reference book has no downsides in my opinion. If you don't like the weight of it, do as he says and take the sections you need out of the book. We did that with the Madrid section and amazingly, it stayed together like a mini-book. Obviously you lose the more rigid cover that way, but it's a great way to lighten your load.

Took parts of this book in our trip to Spain and found it useful and factual. The detailed street maps were accurate and it is a good size to put in your bag.It was a little hard to pull apart the sections by city but once separated, they held together well.

We're considering a trip to Spain. So naturally we ordered the latest version of Rick Steve's Spain as a planning and touring guide. His travel books are packed with overview, detail and planning information.In the past we've used his guides for other European destinations with great results. As he suggested we rip them apart and take along the parts that are relevant to our trip. In Italy we connected with one of his suggested tour guides and had a fantastic tour in Venice. And we followed his advice on using private tours rather than the mass people movement of crowed tour buses from cruise ships. It makes all the difference in the world!!We also recommend looking into his destination DVDs as a preview for your trip. They also make great memories for places that have been visited. The Rick Steve's web site also has downloadable audio guides for a great many destinations. Another plus for travel planning and touring.

Very happy with the book. After walking the entire 491 mile Camino Frances, I spent 4 days in Madrid prior to returning to the States. The hotel and tourist site recommendations for Madrid were spot on. Also did a very good job with the public transportation section. This was my third trip to Spain, and I'm a Spanish speaker. At least as to the Madrid section, the information was much more detailed than most guidebooks . Greatly appreciated the section on what art work to look for in the Prado.

This book is a useful guide to travel in Spain, especially about logistics, modes of transportation, and how to see different areas. I found it useful for Madrid and Barcelona, and the way to optimize my time in both big cities. The walking tours of Barcelona are really good. There wasn't as much detail as I'd like in the less-traveled areas. For example, the Fiesta of San Fermin and the Running of the Bulls wasn't nearly as detailed, nor as accurate (as experienced by yours truly). Also, the recommendations for meals could use a bit of adjustment - I found much better options by talking to locals and especially hotel concierges in nearly every city. But overall, as Steves recommends, tear out the sections you need and bring them with you as a general guide to get you going. Bravo!

This book provides specific information on the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage trail I'll be exploring later this year. All my fellow pilgrims have also ordered this book. It's been very helpful in our planning. It also has great information on Spain in general which we'll also be visiting. I wish I had discovered this guide before buying several other travel guides. Rick Steves is truly an expert.
