Review

“Go, Granny, Go! . . . This astonishing tale will send you looking for your hiking boots. A wonderful story, wonderfully told.” —CHARLES MCNAIR, BOOKS EDITOR AT PASTE MAGAZINE AND AUTHOR OF PICKETT’S CHARGE“Grandma Gatewood’s Walk is a brilliant look at an America—both good and bad—that has slipped away, seen through the eyes and feet of one of America’smost unlikely heroines. Gatewood’s story suggests anything is possible; no matter your age, gender, or quality of your walking shoes.” —STEPHEN RODRICK, AUTHOR OF THE MAGICAL STRANGER“Grandma Gatewood’s Walk is sure to fuel not only the dreams of would-be hikers, but debates on the limits of endurance, the power of determination, and the nature of myth.” —EARL SWIFT, AUTHOR OF THE BIG ROADS“A quiet delight of a book.” —KIRKUS REVIEWS

The Story of Grandma GatewoodWas interested in reading this because it's about the Appalachian trail which I've been on a few feet of it in TN and MA.At 67, in 1955 she left Ohio and took a bus to WV and onto Georgia where she started her trail hiking.Love hearing of all the nature and can picture it all in my mind. Amazing that my family has relatives that live in the same town as where she was from.Lots of history with politics and events that happened over the days: first major highways made...I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Grandma Gatewood was a 67 year old woman, whose 11 children had grown up and left home when she decided that she was going to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail from Mt. Oglethorpe, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin, Maine. The key, however, is that she didn't tell a soul about her intended trip…she just took off. In addition to being the first female through hiker to complete the trail, she did it with a bare minimum of gear and equipment and she did it in the summer if 1955, when women just didn't do those things. She started in canvas top sneakers and ended up going through 7 pairs of shoes. The book alternates between the story of Gatewood's life from the time she was married to an abusive husband until the time she started her "walk" with the story of her time on the trail. In addition, the author adds historical information, such as details about the damage done by Hurricanes Carol and Dianne.Grandma Gatewood did more to "advertise" the Appalachian Trail than anyone before or since, and became famous for her walks in various places. She not only hiked the AT three times (twice as a through hiker and once in segments), but she also hiked the Oregon Trail and helped to create a trail system in her native Ohio. It's wouldn't be out of place to call her one of the most influential women of her time. The book is a fascinating look at her abusive married life, as well as her interest in hiking. It is easy to read and provides a glimpse into life in the mid 1950's. I recommend this book highly to anyone as a great read.

I've been reading a few books lately about hiking - the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. It's been very interesting. This particular book is definitely the most inspiring of all. I totally loved it and have been recommending it to all my friends. What an amazing woman Emma Gatewood was. We are all "soft" today compared to her. Lol. It's hard to even imagine doing what she did at her age. What really surprised me the most was learning that this 2,050 mile trip on the AT at age 67 was just the beginning! She hiked it two more times after that and then when she was well into her 70s she hiked the entire Oregon trail too from its beginning point in Missouri. Amazing! Then, after that, she was instrumental in getting a trail blazed through Ohio and actually blazed 6 miles of it all by herself clearing the way to make a trail. She never quit hiking and working all the way up to the day she died at age 84 I believe it was. I was so inspired by her. She was an incredible woman & inspired so many people after her hike on the AT. This was back in 1955 when she did that with no modern hiking supplies at all. She walked in Keds sneakers. No tent. No cook stove. No water purifier. No sleeping bag. No backpack. Not much food or water. Barely any money. $30 a month Social Security check. Before seeing this book on Amazon I had never even heard of her. I'm so glad I read this. I'm not even a hiker myself either. An armchair wanna be hiker I guess you could say at age 68. That's why I wanted to read this so much. It was like if she could do it maybe there's hope for me too. Haha. I'm lucky to get through my 2 mile morning walk. Can you even imagine covering 20 - 30 miles a day? Phew!

In Ben Montgomery’s eye-opening profile, Grandma Gatewood’s Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail, readers encounter the real life folk heroin Emma Gatewood. On the trail, her story is legend; and it takes on such proportions for a plethora of reasons, some of which have nothing to do with hiking. She gave birth to eleven children and somehow managed to find the time and energy to help her husband run a farm—several, in fact. She found time to read the classics. She wrote poetry and kept a detailed journal. She hiked. She spent lots of time in the woods. She knew all the local flora and fauna, what was edible, what was medicine, and what to avoid. She endured the tragedy of a violently abusive marriage to one P.C. Gatewood, a “relationship” in which he consistently physically assaulted and raped her; on at least one occasion he broke one of her ribs. She was a fighter, a survivor, and a trailblazer in every sense of those words. And yes, she was the first woman to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail: not once, not twice, but three times—also a first. Emma Gatewood, perhaps because of that adversity, those tragedies and hardships, would turn her story into one of a triumph of the human spirit by doing nothing more than putting one foot in front of the other: more than five million times over the course of nearly five months. On 3 May, 1955, Emma Gatewood, sixty seven year old mother of eleven, stood on Mt. Oglethorpe in Georgia, which was at that time the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, and prepared to take her first steps toward Mt. Katahdin in Baxter State Park in the state of Maine more than 2,000 miles away. She would do this in a single push; she would thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. The average hiker who completes this feat takes from five to seven months. Over this time, hikers brave the elements, cuts, scrapes, bruises, wild animals, danger to life and limb through falling or injury, hunger, disease, and any number of other dangers. Thus, thru-hikers are also generally well prepared, even if they carry as little as possible to cut back on weight over very long hikes. From a tent, rain gear, bug spray and sunscreen, food, water filters and cooking materials, extra-socks and clothing to perhaps even a second pair of shoes or boots, most hikers will carry everything they need in an ultra-light, well designed pack that, on average, weighs somewhere between thirty and fifty pounds. (The recommendation is that a pack shouldn’t weigh more than 20% of a hiker’s body weight.) On that day in 1955, Emma Gatewood had with her a shower curtain for a shelter, a tasteful dress in case she needed to look nice, some mints, and other various and sundry items in a pack she had sewn out of denim. She carried this pack, weighing twelve pounds, slung over her shoulder. It’s at this point in Ben Montgomery’s profile that readers come to understand that they have never done anything this hardcore in their life. At 268 pages, Montgomery’s volume is by no means slim; it is, however, a page turner. A lot also has to do with the narrative structure Montgomery deploys. Rather than working from birth to death and detailing the events of a life chronologically, Montgomery breaks the text up into parallel thematic elements. Over the course of the essay he pairs the trail narrative with that of Gatewood’s personal life, or the background of social and political history. Some reviewers have criticized this narrative structure, suggesting that some of the historical, social and political commentary distracts from Gatewood’s story. However, such criticism fails to fully grasp Montgomery’s purpose.  By organizing the text in this manner, Montgomery achieves the feat of helping (careful) readers to understand just how rebellious, how revolutionary, Emma Gatewood’s walk really was. In this light, hiking becomes not an activity of leisure in which one seeks health and wellness —though in some sense it is that—it instead becomes an act of defiance. Additionally, it shows that Emma’s life, very nearly from beginning to end, was simultaneously full of both beauty and danger. Both the title and organization of the chapter “Rhododendron and Rattlesnakes” juxtapose elegant, delicate beauty with life-threatening danger:South of town, in a cabin on Sugar Creek, Emma Gatewood learned she was pregnant with her first child not long before her new husband struck her for the first time. He smacked her with an open hand, and the sharp sting of his palm on her cheek stunned her, frightened her. (33-34)In our imaginations we are with Emma Gatewood on “Sugar Creek”, a meandering stream, perhaps hard by some lazy acreage as she caresses her swelling belly, as she thinks about the future, as she hopes, as she dreams the dreams of a life yet lived. Then we feel the “sting” of a hand on her face as we too are “stunned” by a “strike” seemingly out of the blue. Surely, Montgomery’s word choice is no accident; he’s painting P.C. Gatewood as a viper. Rhododenra thrive in harsh environments, sometimes under severe conditions such as those often found on the AT, or in this case, at home. Furthermore, the use of the singular in "rhododendron" suggests the singularity of Gatewood's person, while rattlesnakes suggests the plurality of her trials. It is this type of narrative brilliance that allows Ben Montgomery to tether Emma Gatewood’s personal life to the trail narrative. In so doing, he shows how factual events in a life become a metaphor: “She was surrounded by unfamiliar territory, alone in a foreign place, full of curiosity and also dread and fear of the unknown” (33). Despite the fact that Montgomery, here, is talking about a specific experience of Gatewood’s journey on the trail, it applies to her personal life as well. And that’s the point. In addition to the supplying details from Emma Gatewood’s personal life, Montgomery provides his readers with a sense of the social and political setting in the 1950s, further highlighting the uniqueness, perhaps even the rebelliousness of her decision and actions. It was an incredibly conservative era in American history when a woman’s place was in the home. It was the era of the “Sunday drive”. It was a time when people were supposed to be moving to the suburbs and enjoying the peace and comfort of the good life from behind a white picket fence. It was also a politically charged and revolutionary era. McCarthyism was rampant, the cold war was in full swing, the U.S. had just tested an H-bomb on Bikini atoll, desegregation was at the center of social and political issues, and we must keep in mind that the mid-1950s was the nascence of the counter-cultural movement that would later explode and culminate in Woodstock. This is the same decade (the 50s) that Kerouac published The Dharma Bums and On the Road. This is the same decade in which climbers such as Royal Robbins, Steve Roper and Yvon Chouinard would seek an alternative to the conservatism being espoused by society in general. As young men they eschewed the norm and headed to Yosemite, living as “dirtbags”. They would climb and define a new, alternative ethic for how to live one’s life. It is during all this that Emma Gatewood chose to walk. Given the backdrop of conservative America, her act was one of revolution. As to why “Grandma Gatewood” did all this? That remains a mystery. She achieved national celebrity during her hike. Reporters tracked her down, followed and documented her journey on the trail; Sports Illustrated wrote a profile of the grandmother from Ohio. All along, whatever they sought to know or whatever questions they asked, there was one that they all had in common: “Why are you doing this?” Gatewood gave a number of responses over the years, but never seemed to provide a full, satisfactory answer. As Montgomery has it,Emma was coy when people asked why, at her age, she had decided to strike out on the long trail. As America’s attention turned more toward Emma in her final days on the A.T., as newspaper reporters ramped up their dispatches to update the public on her condition and whereabouts, she offered an assortment of reason about why she was hiking. The kids were finally out of the house. She heard that no woman had yet thru-hiked in one direction. She liked nature. She thought it would be a lark.I want to see what’s on the other side of the hill, then what’s beyond that. (160)Outside of some brief speculation, entertaining any number of possibilities as to why Emma Gatewood would do this, Montgomery concludes that the best answer to this question came from Emma herself, and not from those attempting to interpret the various answers she provided over the years. Montgomery believes that the simple reason, in Emma’s own words was, “Because I wanted to” (259). Outside of the epilogue and acknowledgements, here the book ends. It is most fitting that Montgomery ends it with Emma’s words, and not his.In my experience a good many members of the outdoors community find their outlet in out of doors activities such as climbing, hiking, kayaking, camping, fishing, etc. It is also my experience, or at least my perception, that the percentage of people in this community who are victims of trauma, battle mental illness, or experience moderate to severe anxiety or stress exceeds that of the national average. (I may have to write an essay on this.) Emma Gatewood seems to be no exception. Given her experience it may be easy for audiences to think that she was running from something, or perhaps running toward something. Perhaps that’s true. And while Montgomery is satisfied with Emma Gatewood’s “Because I wanted to”, he also admits that her numerous answers seem “as though she wanted people to seek out their own conclusions” (160). I like to think that she was walking through it. No one can run that long or that far. Whatever we run from will eventually catch us.  We can, however, out-endure it. Whatever “it” is. When we walk, we walk with our problems, not away from them; we acknowledge their existence. In acknowledging their existence we provide ourselves the opportunity for a solution. Walking provides the focus and perspective necessary to discover the solution. The road may be long, with many a-winding turn, but only by setting out and putting one foot in front of the other, again, and again, and again, will we get there.Â

Beginning DirectX 11 Game Programming by Allen Sherrod is, what I’d consider, a great introduction into DirectX programming. Just to be clear, it’s really only an overview of the DirectX APIs (Direct3D, DirectInput, etc.) and not really a graphics or game programming book (despite the title). So there is very little in the way of actual gameplay type programming, as you never really get to the point of having any sort of game demo. In that same respect, you don’t really deal too much with computer graphics theory, though there is some brief coverage of lighting models in regards to shader programming. That said, what is in the text is a good start to learning the DirectX 11 API and getting some foundation knowledge of the Windows platform. The book covers basic Win32 window creation, initializing Direct3D, error handling, basic 2D graphics concepts, font rendering, input handling (with Win32, DirectInput, and XInput), fundamental 3D math (vectors, matrices, coordinate systems), cameras, and 3D models. Overall a good amount of topics, and decent coverage of the building blocks for working with the DirectX 11 SDK. While I wouldn’t say the book is for “beginners” (as nothing involving DirectX or Win32 is really for novices), it doesn’t go into as deep a depth as something like the Frank Luna book (which covers more interesting topics like normal mapping and shadow maps). However, I did find the discussion at the end about loading the OBJ 3D file format into Direct3D to be unique, as most books do not go into this.So do I think Beginning DirectX 11 Game Programming is worth reading? Certainly. It was an approachable read and the Kindle e-book was moderately priced at around $25. For sure, if you are working with the DirectX 11 SDK you will want all the help you can get. Granted, I think some of the other titles I’ve seen had more impressive demos, or deeper coverage, but I felt this was a fine introductory text. I’d even go as far to say that you should read this book first, as it presents the basic knowledge in a way that is much more to the point and not as daunting as some other resources. The one thing, which is both exciting and sad, is that I believe this was the last DirectX 11 book available on Amazon that I haven’t read. I see there are a few newer books covering DirectX 11.1 or later, but I’d really like to stick to straight 11 due to Windows 7 compatibility. So, at this point, I think I maybe have got as far as the introduction books will take me and I will have to just start developing with it and learning as I go. Not a bad problem to have. Although I still have a few general game engine books in my backlog, I’m feeling more confidant about getting into the trenches of development with my engine and this book has definitely helped.

If this book spent less time explaining Intro to C++ topics like why I should use the managed pointer libraries (really?) and didn't write every single example out like a lesson in maximum object-oriented coding, it might have had space to actually get into DirectX 11 topics like tesselation. And, maybe some real gaming concerns like collision detection and how to use DirectCompute. Or 3D/stereoscopy. Or interfacing with other MS libraries (GDI, DirectDraw). Or any of a host of actual gaming topics. Instead, by the end, you are prepared to understand only the most rudimentary examples that are covered by many on-line tutorials in one quarter the space. But, hey, you will remember to error check every single API call and never to let the memory manager de-allocate anything when you are done (I am trying to sarcastically say that every example is a long-winded and pendantic). There are also a lot of minor errors that any competent reviewer should have caught. And even a non-technical editor should have noticed that many of the graphics are unrecognizable. These aren't terrible in and of themselves, but are probably indicative that this book was really rushed to market. It is hard to believe that either of these authors have ever written any serious, real-time gaming code. They seem better suited to writing Intro to Java books. For which they would probably be great. Use the Web tutorials and SDK examples first. Only buy this book if you really, really want another pass of the same material. I would be very bummed if I had only this to use as my primary source.

Given that other reviewers have mostly expressed legitimate concerns, I will not restate those concerns except the one that I feel is pertinent. This book (and online sample code) provides no real "games", not even simple or rudimentary ones, only fundamental sample code is provided to demonstrate functionality of a handful of DirectX basic parts -- it leaves writing simple games as an "exercise" for the viewer stated toward the end of the book. This may have been acceptable to me if the companion website's "Coming Soon" links had ever provided them. Two years later, today, the website still says "Coming Soon".Programmers in a beginning level need to see how a game is written in order to figure out how to write their own game. Advanced programmers who are new to game programming need to see how the "game" aspects are incorporated into a program. This book gives a basic lecture on what to expect in the world of game programming, but doesn't really tell the reader "how" to create a game. I don't like saying this, but the book almost sounds like it is a DirectX "teaser".A beginning DirectX programmer would not be interested in what past versions of DirectX have done (it would be irrelevant), they would be interested in the current version of DirectX. History lessons in the book would seem to apply only to programmers who are already familiar with DirectX past versions, but the title of this book states it is for beginning level readers. I would have replaced the history lesson with the missing chapter on sound and audio that can only be found online. While not strictly relevant to the book, I found that even though code samples worked on my Windows Vista OS, the window would not initialize on my Windows 7 OS. The book depends on all sample code to work, and while it compiles without errors on my windows 7 OS, the initialization of the DirectX function that creates the swap chain continues to fail with an "invalid parameter" return code. No help is given on troubleshooting -- a "beginning" programmer would be frustrated, and the book does not provide links to resources for such things. For a "beginner's" book, it is not one I would recommend; and it would appear the 2011 online efforts to provide tutorials on the companion website have been abandoned.

I was actually looking for information on how to bullet proof my home and the book title seemed to have all of the correct words.I quickly discovered this book wasn't about bullet proofing homes, but rather its about making inexpensive personal body armor.I have enjoyed this book and it has actually expanded my thoughts about bullet proofing my house.I liked the authors writing style, including the bits of humor.

I would have never thought to try and make something bulletproof. The I read this. Before it was almsot like witchcraft or something, but the author open up how I view this subject. I'm looking forward to future and expanded versions of this book.

Great book, some interesting ideas.... maybe start my own project soon. ;) i would like more information on kevlar, spectra and some of the newer materials available today, how they work in theory. But overall great read.

Very short book. Very basic knowledge.

good info

The author apparently put a lot of time into his discoveries but what he came up with does not seem practical for me.

A perfect start for someone looking to be a supplier or safety enthusiast.Easy to understand and test at home.

The most interesting non- fiction book that I've read in a while. Very informative and the author's witty voice keeps it from being boring. With the number of idiots packing guns around these days a bit of armor is a pretty good idea. Steve, thank you for your service and your continued dedication to protecting others.

Review

Praise for Andrea Camilleri and the Inspector Montalbano Series“The idiosyncratic Montalbano is totally endearing.”—The New York Times “Camilleri is as crafty and charming a writer as his protagonist is an investigator.”—The Washington Post Book World"Andrea Camilleri [is] the godfather of Italian crime fiction."—The Guardian (UK)“Hailing from the land of Umberto Eco and La Cosa Nostra, Montalbano can discuss a pointy-headed book like Western Attitudes Toward Death as unflinchingly as he can pore over crime-scene snuff photos. He throws together an extemporaneous lunch of shrimp with lemon and oil as gracefully as he dodges advances from attractive women.”—Los Angeles Times“[Camilleri’s mysteries] offer quirky characters, crisp dialogue, bright storytelling—and Salvo Montalbano, one of the most engaging protagonists in detective fiction…Montalbano is a delightful creation, an honest man on Siciliy’s mean streets.”—USA Today“Camilleri is as crafty and charming a writer as his protagonist is an investigator.”—The Washington Post Book World“Like Mike Hammer or Sam Spade, Montalbano is the kind of guy who can’t stay out of trouble…Still, deftly and lovingly translated by Stephen Sartarelli, Camilleri makes it abundantly clear that under the gruff, sardonic exterior our inspector has a heart of gold, and that any outburst, fumbles, or threats are made only in the name of pursuing truth.”—The Nation“Camilleri can do a character’s whole backstory in half a paragraph.”—The New Yorker“Subtle, sardonic, and molto simpatico: Montalbano is the Latin re-creation of Philip Marlowe, working in a place that manages to be both more and less civilized than chandler’ Los Angeles.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred)“The novels of Andrea Camilleri breathe out the sense of place, the sense of humor, and the sense of despair that fills the air of Sicily."—Donna Leon

In these stories, Montalbano is as impulsive, erratic, and obsessed with food as he will be in his maturity. He is not yet having spectacular fights with Livia, but already his housekeeper Adelina hates his girlfriend. His detectives are very much themselves too — Fazio a compulsive collector of irrelevant facts and Augello causing trouble with his overactive libido. In other words these stories make use of all the familiar comic bits that make Montalbano novels such fun to read. Caterella crashes through doors and garbles names. The caustic coroner has to be bribed with cannoli to give an early summary of autopsy reports. Montalbano has bizarre, somewhat prophetic dreams...And the stories are lively and clever. The crimes concern arson, murder, burglary, kidnapping, snuff films, and loansharking. Montalbano has sudden dazzling insights into his cases from reading a novel, or hearing about a movie, or having lunch with his father.I like novels better than short stories. But these captivating stories are exceptional.

I have enjoyed all of Andrea Camilleri's books about Inspector Montalbano and his girlfriend , Livia, and his quirky coworkers. This book was different than most inasmuch as each chapter was a different story. They were all interesting, the characters were all as lovable as ever and, it seems, that Salvo and Livia had fewer heated arguments.Another enjoyable read and am looking forward to the next book by Camilleri.

This was a collection of short stories, which set up the character, who he is, but maybe we needed a bit more of why he is. But fans will enjoy the book. Very readable. Goes down as easy as Adelina's cooking.

Such a pleasant and humorous main character. So real and SO Italian. Have read many Inspector Montalbana mysteries and hope there are many more to come.

Did not disappoint. Well written as usual. If you like mysteries set in Italy with a large helping of local insights on food, drink, and customs I highly Recommend this author

smell the see, enjoy the food, but most of all love the Inspector and Camarelli the author - they seem so simple, bit are much more involved and intricate.....The characters come to life - Bravo Bravo!

Fun

This collection is fun reading.
