Bought as more of a joke gift for a huge Game of Thrones fan but it was kind of interesting in an "oh, really" or "oh, that's funny way". Not my personal choice as I am not into the show but they liked it and thought it was fun.

Fun book, but not a fabulous piece of literature. It does contain some interesting thoughts and tidbits for the Game of Thorns fan.

Easy read, full of interesting information, much more than I expected. Nice dash of humor every now and then too. You'll be able to amaze people at parties with your knowledge of little known facts about onion DNA ;-)

This book is, in one, oversimplifying word, cool. It just is. It's Game of Thrones, Mythbusters, and the history channel. And it was absolutely fascinating.With section titles like Sex and the Single Dragon, the essays are sharp, funny, and well put together. So many aspects of Game of Thrones, from dragons to sword making to walls of ice, broken down and investigated and "What If?"'ed.The majority of the bookmarks I made in this were just for subjects I want to read more about. Some basic, like why have I never read about the Spanish Inquisition? How did I not know that the US government thought loading bats with napalm and flying them into enemy territory was a good idea? Where do I find out more information on Damascus steel? How do people find out stuff like this, I NEED MORE INFORMATION.Each subject is exceptionally well researched. I'm tickled by the idea of all these scientists and professors being asked to give their opinions on wildfire, 700 foot walls of ice, and what dragons would really be like. And the fact that they did!Not every subject was a success. The first chapter of the book focuses on dragons, and almost all of the information is focused around komodo dragons. Which are not even close to comparable, and this sets a really bad tone for the book. Luckily it picked up after that, but I wish she'd started with something else.Also, I'm confused about the lack of an introduction. I realize I was reading an ARC, and I'm hoping the finished product will have an opening. Because it's a waste not to have a chapter telling your audience what they're about to get themselves into. I like intros far more than I do back-of-the-book blurbs.I cannot stress enough that this book is so freaking cool. A must-have for any Game of Thrones fan, book readers and TV show watchers. There's something in here for everyone

I bought this as a gift for my brother, a GoT fan, so I can't read it until he's finished with it, but the covers are terrific and I loved the story of how the cover illustration of the throne was created.

I was given this book and I intend to pass it on to my son when I am done. Not only is the text really funny, the little drawings are hysterical (white walker in Santa Claus hat and beard). It's also a useful reminder of some of the events in past books (or episodes). Plus, there really is a lot of good science in it. As I am a scientist myself, I can appreciate her knowledge of animal behavior, wolf genetics, etc. The price is very reasonable for this entertaining book.

The author does an excellent job of explaining the policy behind the development of federal environmental law from its inception to 2004. It speaks to the influence of the executive, legislative and judicial branches along the way. With an understanding of the development of this body of law along with the policies and challenges of arriving at its 2004 state, the reader is in a better position to appreciate the current challenges and developments in this far reaching area of law.

This is a good solid reference for the layman. It presents a bit of the sausage-making of regulations. This volume makes the limitations of regualtion based on media (air, water) as opposed to ecosystem structure and function obvious.

Quick read, packed with information. Highly recommend it for people interested in environmental law, and what to expect in the future of this field.

Lazarus places environmental laws in broader context, drawing on history and an extraordinary variety of cultural, scientific, and political details to make candid generalizations. This is unusual in a time of fragmentation and compartmentalization of U.S. academic research disciplines, as well as society, beginning in the 1960s.Thus, for example, many textbooks on environmental policy and history and most environmental organizations tend to focus on the Scottish immigrant advocate of environmental preservation, John Muir, and Theodore Roosevelt as U.S. environmental pioneers. In contrast, Lazarus points out George Perkins Marsh's 1864 book, "Man and Nature" as the groundbreaking study of the interaction of human society with ecology. Among other things,Lazarus notes the significance of public health awareness and advances around 1900, early "municipal efforts to control pollution", the municipal zoning movement, and the enactment by Congress of the Food and Drug Act, and Meat Inspection Act in 1906.Lazarus' unquenchable curiosity nourishes his ability, found in a minority of scholars, to use concrete detail in ways that clarify the big picture, rather than letting it confuse or obfuscate. An example is citation of the effects of DDT to control malaria by public health workers in Borneo in the 1960s.The well-intentioned efforts of public health workers caused decimation of the lizard population when they ate DDT-contaminated food. This in turn decreased the local cat population that had been dependent on lizards for much of their diet. Reduction of the cat population led to an explosion of caterpillars that destroyed the thatched roofs, and rats that spread disease within the village. In short, the story illustrates the complexity and sensitivity of ecological relationships.The author also offers probing and significant detail on political interactions relating to environmental policy. He cites President Nixon's order to his staff to "get his administration out front on the environment" in 1969 and 1970, and the Nixon Administration's early initiatives. He also notes that in time Nixon cooled on environmental action, "becoming convinced that environmentalists were running amok".Lazarus points out in his introduction that the 1970s environmental laws were "enormously radical" , and that in spite of intense and continuing reform efforts, these laws continue to dominate the U.S. environmental management system. He is mindful of some of the problems with current environmental law, including its patchwork nature and objections by business and other groups. However, he embraces the necessity of centralized command & control law and decries the paralysis in extension of lawmaking. Based on my own historical research (that gained valuable material from Lazarus's book) and comparisons with EU policy*, I believe the book overlooks important issues that have come into ever sharper focus since the publication of Lazarus's work.Most important is the fact that the U.S. system remains dominated by an outdated system of labyrinthine laws enacted in response to an atmosphere of crisis more than 35 years ago. They were based on assumptions that the greatest threat to the environment came from industry, and that economic forces would overrun federal regulators if not checked. The response not only created an adversarial, rigid framework of law and regulation selectively applicable to manufacturing,other industry, and activities involving land use. The key laws gave exclusive legal standing to environmental protection (excluding economic or other values), empowered citizen enforcement, and transferred leadership roles in environmental management from professional agencies to Congress and civil courts. This politicized system is unique among advanced nations. It not only created a rift in U.S. society, but fostered subsequent hemmhoraging of U.S. manufacturing and industry, decay of infrastructure (which inevitably involves land use), and hamstrung attempts at innovation in environmental management (except in the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments). I thought that this was quite a creative and great clean reads ebook teaching kids about jazz music,etc. and how to have fun with music. I recommend this for especially any young kids and up who likes music a lot. And lots of colorful pictures too. a these are my reason for giving this ebook five stars. I bought this book because it is important for young people to know about jazz and “scat” singing. I love that the character is based on my favorite singer, Al Jarreau.

I purchased this book on my Kindle for my little nephews and my god-daughters. They loved the interactive abilities the book came with. Even though the little ones could not read, they were able to follow along with the author and responded gleefully to the different sounds on each page. I highly recommend this book for children. Carmen Rubin knows how to captivate the mind and interest of children.

This book is the perfect introduction to music education for children. Beautifully illustrated and wonderfully written, Ashti Meets Birdman Al picks up where music teachers have been forced to leave off in this time of education cuts and removals of music programs from schools. It is also refreshing to see the family dynamic in the book and to have a positive representation of family life in the African American community.

Ashti Meets Birdman Al is and AMAZING interactive book. This is a great book for ALL ages. The illustrations are very colorful and stimulating. It creates a very easy and relaxed atmosphere to learn about notable jazz musicians and an array of instruments. The interactive segments brings smiles to faces young and old. It is a great addition to your child's bookshelf.

Ashti meets Birdman Al is a fun and interactive book that will put a smile on anyone's face. While I don't have children of my own, I'm around young people all the time and this book turns those cricket moments into boisterous laughing, singing and happy occasions. After reading about Ashti and Birdman Al's adventures, you and your family will be skee boppin' all day long!

This was the most wonderful children's book I have ever had the pleasure of reading! I loved the use of real images along with illustration. The story was just darling and people of all ages will enjoy it! I even learned a thing or two about music. Any child should have this read to them. I love this book! A child must-have!
