About the Author

James Hull Miller, a graduate of Princeton, combined an academic background in literature and philosophy with many years of actual theatre experience, twelve of which were spent in teaching. From 1958 until his death in 2007, he was a freelance designer and consultant. His field of special interest was the development of a new stagecraft for the theatre which took the form of freestanding scenery. He designed numerous open-stage theaters based on this system of stagecraft for colleges, communities, student unions, schools and churches. For many years he maintained a scenic studio, the Arts Lab, in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he gave workshops as well as constructed sets for use in a variety of spaces.Mr. Miller was a Charter Member of the U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology and in 1978 was named a Fellow of the Institute. He was also a Founding Member of the American Society of Theatre Consultants.

If you have a shoestring theater budget or your only source for equipment is from the local hardware store this book is useful. Interesting concept on lighting an event/stage with only two seperate 20amp (standard household) curcuits and NO LEDs. BTW James Hull Miller wrote several books on theater and all are very similar and even use the same drawings in many cases

This is a good, clear, no-nonsense book that assumes the reader has some existing knowledge of lighting techniques and advises on how to adapt to a smaller stage and budget. Hand-drawn diagrams and sketches helpful but sometimes a little too detailed for the technicial novice. No glossary. Absolute beginners might like to try Light on the subject by David Hays instead

While I was drawn to this title in desperation after having a coworker try to ruin my career and sanity with gossip, this book is actually good for anybody and everybody. The best part of this book was when the author directed certain readers to another book (Codependent No More) prior to going further in his book. That was a great suggestion for me, and I feel like I wouldn't have gotten the full effect of this book without reading that one first. The author explains the complicated nature of invalidation and gives the reader tools to a) keep an invalidator from invalidating you; b) recognize the invalidator in yourself and understand not only why you get like that but what you can do to stop yourself; and c) learn to have some measure of healthy compassion for the invalidators you come across.I spent 90% of a three day weekend on these two books. I can say that, after trying unsuccessfully to handle stress, anxiety and depression through multiple attempts with medication, food, alcohol, etc - that I have felt more calm, happier, and more "present" than I have, maybe ever. I also have no anxiety about going to work tomorrow. The thoughts and memories of previous insults, bullying, abuse, and even little slights (as well as things I've said and done myself that were invalidating to others) seem to come up in my mind like they always do, but I've been able to see them for what they were and calmly put them to the side. It's too soon to really tell how this will change my life or anything, but I'll know the next time I'm faced with a difficult situation (probably tomorrow, haha).

Despite its relative brevity, this book is packed with very illuminating information about the insidious and destructive tactics used by all of us when in a less-than-healthy place emotionally. Of course, the author makes allowance for the truly egregious offenders, those who set out to wreck the psyches of other people. Most important, he describes general ways, with a few specific examples, of how to effectly disarm such people and take your sanity back. I appreciated the author's acknowledgement that there isn't a "one size fits all approach" to dealing with nasty people. Nevertheless, he points you in the right direction and arms you with the tools you need to cope. Bravo!

For me, the examples and scenarios were the best tool for understanding. The theory is fine, but as he said we all invalidate from time to time and ~21% of us do it all the time consciously or unconsciously. Unfortunately imo there are too few societal examples of healthy behavior and hundreds of tv programs and series where invalidation is the driving "drama" or entertainment... out there possibly spreading the "disease" of invalidation as normal or acceptable behavior. Thus, my three star rating is based on the lack of examples. Many people who invalidate are seasoned pros and I found assertive communication with them is like stepping into a boxing ring for the first time and your opponent is Mike Tyson, unwilling to pull punches and if he thinks he is going to "lose" he will bite your ear off.

This book has been my go to " SELF HELP Bible." I read this when it was first published and I still refer to it today (almost 25 years later.). It is CONCISE, HELPFUL, EYE OPENING and LIFE CHANGING. It gives one very easy to learn and apply methods for identifying NASTY people, honing in on the effect it has on you and techniques to protect you from further abuse. EVERYONE can benefit.....Of course, if YOU are an invalidator this book will NOT appeal to you. Sorry, Invalidator, you won't be able to manipulate any longer. :)

That's when this treasure of a book comes in handy. When I first read it I laughed out loud several times. Jay Carter has a gift for helping us learn about Nasty People in a light hearted and poignant way. I have given away more copies of this than any other book in my life. There is a good reason for that. Invalidators, or "nasty people" as Jay Carter calls them are everywhere. Parents, friends, wives, husbands, well they are just everywhere. People who want to shame and blame and humiliate you. People who want to trick you into arguments that you always loose because you are just an inferior, damaged person.Had enough? Ready to learn how to feel better about yourself and stop wasting your time fighting over something with someone who really doesn't care about anything except making you feel bad.Jay Carter also does a good job of showing how invalidators often do what they do because it is how they were raised. He offers some hope that someday, an invalidator may change their evil ways but it is OK for you to set boundaries, blow their cover and take care of your self in the mean time.I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK MORE THAN SIMILAR TYPES OF BOOKS ABOUT DEALING WITH PEOPLE YOU CAN'T STAND. It is sooooo simple and easy to understand. Just a great book to help you quit allowing people to beat you up because your are not perfect, have ADHD, are a bit eccentric, and a million other behaviors that make each of of different. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Jay Carter does an excellent job telling us how to control the really nasty people in our lives. He calls them INVALIDATORS and we all have a few of them hanging around to give us eternal grief from time to time. This book gives you the tools to put such people in their place. This book nails the Invalidators to the wall and teaches us how to turn their nasty ways back on themselves. I've had this book in it's first printing back in the early 1990's and bought the updated version as well. I wore my first copy of the book out. I locked it in my top desk drawer at work. It was my reference book to manage the people who gave me grief. The good news is I survived and they didn't. The book works. Buy it and eliminate the pests.

Saw this in a boutique, knew I'd look on Amazon later!! Nice quality book with pages resembling envelopes that you unfold and write letters in. Thought this would be great fun to fill in over time for our next anniversary! ❤️👍

I figured if something awful ever happened to me, like death or coma or finding myself stranded on a desert island, it behooves me to leave behind some small token of my love to my husband so he could have something to remember me by other than a series of fail-worthy selfies littering my cloud. Each folded page comes with a letter/writing prompt and lines on the inside for you to compose your feels on it so your bbcakes knows all the hows and whys of your lurve. You can then seal and put a sticker on it and have them open it at your or their own timing. I already did one for my kids and thought I'd extend the same kindness towards my beau. I'm still working on and I like to pull it out with a nice glass of wine and when I'm feeling particularly wistful.

This book is a variation on a common gift - letters of some sort to be opened by a loved one on a specific day. The projects are all the rage on pinterest and etsy, and are all, without exception, absolutely adorable. This is the version for lazy people like me who want to write letters without also having to get amazing and creative. (If you want to know how lazy I am, well, I got this to give to my husband for Christmas but I still haven't finished the letters.)The pages are definitely designed so that one can just write a short letter on each page, then seal that for a later date. I feel that is almost too restricting, as it's going to be harder to manage if I make a mistake or want to write a lot on one specific page. I would have preferred envelopes with a few pieces of stationery in each. But, the way this book is made, it's easy enough to glue or tape up the sides of any page, and then it turns into a sort of envelope. I might alternate between that and keeping the single page letter.Overall, this is a really good book. The quality is high, and it's not overwhelmingly cutesy or sentimental. There is definitely room to decorate it and make it really personal, but if you care more about writing special messages and getting it done, you'll end up with a gorgeous gift simply by sealing up each page. I believe there are several versions of this book. If I ever manage to finish this one, I'll definitely look into starting another. I can't think of a more romantic gift.

It is not the best product ever. The moment I opened it, the front cover was not properly glued to the pages. I decided I would glue it myself when I was done writing since I needed the book in that moment. Whilst I was writing, the pages came off the cover completely. It's just disappointing since I would never expect that from a book. Overall, the book is clearly poorly put together, but it makes a good gift.

Super cute idea. I intend to gift these to my fiancé for our upcoming wedding just to capture all the things I love and cherish about him and our relationship. Sappy? You betcha. But what timing could possibly be more appropriate for a little extra sap?

I bought this for my husband before he went out of town. I filled out several of the prompts and put the book in his bag before he left. Absolutely adorable, hardcover so you can shelf it and have as a keepsake to pass down. Comes with coordinating stickers to seal your love letters after they're written. Would be a great anniversary or wedding gift for a bride or groom.

I purchased this as a cute addition to send to my spouse who is deployed. The set itself is adorable. I absolutely cannot write in it in the book (even with something to lean on, it is quite difficult., so I just took it apart and cut out the notes. The individual letter designs and ideas are adorable. Definitely worth purchasing as a cute thing to give letters out individually

I saw this exact letter time capsule booklet in stores and decided to check on Amazon before purchasing it. Sure enough, it was a much better price on Amazon! The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five was because the binding does not stay together very well. It does pull apart and become detached from the cover. Other than that, this was so much fun working on for my boyfriend and it is adorable!

My sister and I listened to this book from Audible and I am now reading his other book. Such a sweet, well written story of despair and hope.Having just lost a husband less than a year ago, I can certainly relate to his sorrow and feelings of worthlessness - being old and useless. What a blessing this book as been to me.

I honestly didn't go into this book expecting to like it as much as I did. I have trouble with books where the main character is not someone I particularly like. But, I gave this one a shot. I was pleasantly surprised. I couldn't help but like the curmudgeon. It's not a deep-thinking book. It's there for entertainment, to make you 'feel' emotions, to transport you to another place and another life. Therefore, I give the book five stars for being exactly what it claims to be--a story about one man and the circle of friends that he makes despite his grouchy personality. I liked the backstory with the wife (even though I thought the author went too far with the tragedy heaped onto this always-optimistic woman). I bought the audio book to listen when I couldn't read and the narrator was flawless. I've heard some pretty bad narrators lately from best-selling books (Miss Peregrine's for example), but this audio book was very well done. I have one gigantic bone to pick with the author. 59 years old is not 89 years old. Fifty-nine years old is when most people are in the apex of careers--before retirement and also having a lot of knowledge and experience to help them in their career fields. The 50-somethings in my office know what an iPad is, how to use computers, have the latest cell phones, and are pretty up on all the new tech gadgets because they are the ones that can afford them! There was no reason why the author couldn't make this a lot more believable by making the main character 79 or older. There was nothing to prevent the backstory being set further back. The whole time I was reading, I had to make myself forget the character was supposed to be 59. For godsakes, the President of the United States is 56!! I wonder why the author chose such a relatively young main character to act like my grandfather would. But, if you can overlook that weird decision, the rest of the story is very well done and very entertaining.

In case you’re one of those few who haven’t heard about this book, here’s what it’s about in a nutshell: a curmudgeonly old man is prevented from killing himself multiple times by neighbors who are needy and people to refuse to obey the sign that restricts parking in the residential area of his small neighborhood. It’s like the movie Up, only with more people that are adults, and more character. Take this paragraph for example:"For more than fifteen minutes he stood waiting for her at the station in his tight-fitting suit and his new-polished shoes. He was skeptical about people who came late. 'If you can’t depend on someone being on time, you shouldn’t trust ’em with anything more important either,' he used to mutter when people came dribbling along with their time cards three or four minutes late, as if this didn’t matter. As if the railway line would just lie there waiting for them in the morning and not have something to do."Every sentence in this book is imbued with characterization and style; every word is a brushstroke in the painting of Ove as not only a curmudgeon, but an (spoiler alert!) orphan, a loving husband to a wife who was paralyzed and rendered infertile by a drunk driver, a principled man, a hard worker, a dedicated Saab driver, and one of those loyal-to-the-death-but-you-wouldn’t-know-it-to-talk-to-him kind of people.And, unlike most adult-genre books, especially ones about old people, there is something interesting or amusing or soulful on almost every page. The pacing and plot weaving are impeccable. It’s truly a treasure to read.

There is a part of me that didn't think I needed to review A Man Called Ove because so many people have read it at this point, but I have talked to a few who have not, hence my desire to write this review.I will admit that I am entirely on the Ove train!The book is about a man, named Ove, who is the angry neighbor that we all seem to have. He complains about everything, has put up signs around his neighborhood with rules about what should and shouldn't be done, and feels there is a proper place for everything. He is not a friendly guy to say the least.Into his life walks or rather drives a family who are to be his new neighbors. He doesn't bother to get to know their names and calls them the pregnant one and the lanky one. After an accident with the lanky one, Ove is forced to help this family, complaining the entire time.Throughout the book Ove also speaks to his wife, complaining about the neighbors, the rule breakers, and how much he misses her (very minor spoiler). During interludes within the narrative, we read about how Ove became Ove. I will say by the end of the book, a bunch of dust was flying around the room and some got into my eyes.The first thing to write is this book is funny. Ove is quite the character and how he treats people is hysterical. He just doesn't care what he says or how he says it. He simply wants order in his world and has lived that way for all of his life. The way he expresses himself becomes incredibly funny.It is also a tragic story. Backman interweaves the two (funny and tragic) quite well and doesn't make it overly heartwarming. This could have easily become a book with the sentiment that we don't know people's past, so don't judge them, but it isn't. Ove is an ass in his past too and sometimes with reason. Backman keeps it level with just enough to make the reader fall for Ove.The great thing is this is a book that pretty much anyone and everyone can (and will) enjoy. I recommended this one for book clubs and discussion groups. Grandmas will like this as well as middle aged men. Ove is simply a good book.I gave this one 5 stars.

About the Author

Michael L. Brookshire, Ph.D. is a Professor of Economics at the Marshall University Graduate College in Charleston, West Virginia, and the President of Michael L. Brookshire and Associates. His doctorate in economics is from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and much of his early career was spent as an executive officer of the University of Tennessee and the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Brookshire has authored two books and over thirty-five refereed articles and book chapters on the proper calculation of economic damages. He has worked for plaintiff and defense attorneys in such notable cases as the Arrow Air (Gander, Newfoundland) and Lockerbie (Scotland) airplane crash cases and suchclass action cases as the Fen-Phen, Bendectin, E. I. du Pont C-8, and Tobacco Smoker cases. Dr. Brookshire was a charter member of the National Association of Forensic Economics (NAFE) and served on the Board of Directors from 1990-2001. He served as the fifth president of the Association in 1993 1994 and as the second, executive director of the Association from 1999 2001. He received in 1999 the past presidents award for outstanding service to the Association.Frank Slesnick, Ph.D. received his B.A. from Oberlin College and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota. He taught at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and for thirty years at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition to his full-time duties as a professor of economics, he has served as a forensic economic consultant for twenty-five years in the area of personal injury/death cases with a specific focus on medical cost issues. Dr. Slesnick has published widely in the field of forensic economics and currently serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Forensic Economics. In 1991 92, he served as the fourth President of the National Association of Forensic Economics. He retired from teaching in 2005 but maintains an active consulting practice.John O. Ward, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and President of John Ward Economics, a litigation consulting firm located in Prairie Village, Kansas. Dr. Ward has a B.A. and M.A. in Economics from the University of Toledo and a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma, granted in 1970. Dr. Ward was a professor of economics at UMKC from 1969 to 2003, serving as Department Chair for fourteen years and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for eight years. He continues to teach Human Resource Economics and Law and Economics for graduate students. His publications include five edited or authored books, fifty-three papers published in refereed journals, publications in law journals and reviews and numerous presentations at national and international academic and professional meetings. Dr. Ward was the first President of the National Association of Forensic Economics and the founding editor of the Journal of Forensic Economics. He served as editor of that journal until 2004, when he became editor emeritus. Dr.Ward has served as a consultant for the Department of Labor, the Department of Defense, the governments of Brazil and Mexico and numerous non-profit organizations, including the American Epilepsy Association and the Families of September 11th Association. Dr. Ward s consulting firm, John Ward Economics, employs eight economists and staff. The firm provides economic litigation support in commercial litigation, employment law, anti-trust and personal injury and death litigation throughout the United States.

This book was good. Gets to the point and not like your normal textbook with hundred of pages. However, the material in the book is kinda common sense in a way. The font was easy to read. The questions and examples in the book were great. The last few chapters do get a bit redundant, but that's fine.

The text material was fine but do not recommend Kindle books for students, very limited as to what you can do with books as compared to Nook books which provides lots of flexibility.
