About the Author

Daniel Limmer (Author). Dan Limmer, EMT-P, has been involved in EMS for over 25 years. He remains active as a paramedic with Kennebunk Fire Rescue in Kennebunk, Maine, and the Kennebunkport EMS (KEMS) in Kennebunkport, Maine. A passionate educator, Dan teaches EMT and paramedic courses at the Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, Maine, and has taught at the George Washington University in Washington, DC and the Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. He is a charter member of the National Association of EMS Educators and a member of the National Association of EMTs (NAEMT) for which he serves on the Advanced Medical Life Support Committee. Dan was formerly involved in law enforcement, beginning as a dispatcher and retiring as a police officer in Colonie, New York, where he received three command recognition awards as well as the distinguished service award (Officer of the Year) in 1987. During his 20-year law enforcement career he served in the communications, patrol, juvenile, narcotics, and training units. In addition to authoring several EMS journal articles, Dan is co-author of a number of EMS textbooks for Brady including First Responder: A Skills Approach, Essentials of Emergency Care, Advanced Medical Life Support, the military and fire service editions of Emergency Care, and others. He speaks frequently at regional, state, and national EMS conferences. Michael F. O'Keefe (Author). Mike O'Keefe, MS, EMT-P, became the Vermont EMS State Training Coordinator in 1989. Dickinson (Medical Editor). Edward T. Dickinson, MD, NREMT-P, FACEP, is currently Assistant Professor and Director of EMS Field Operations in the Department of Emergency Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is Medical Director of the Malvern Fire Company, the Berwyn Fire Company, and the Township of Haverford paramedics in Pennsylvania. He is a residency-trained, board-certified emergency medicine physician who is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Dickinson began his career in emergency services in 1979 as a firefighter-EMT in upstate New York. He has remained active in fire service and EMS for the past 25 years. The book is busted ! The book is marked all in, also has a huge coffee stain on the first 150 pages. The book didn't come with the My Brady lab Pearson access code like it was supposed too. The content is exactly what I wanted, but everything else has failed drastically to meet my expectations and I set the bar pretty low.

I have always been a fan of Pearson/Brady textbooks because of their ease of reading. My major disappointment is that you have to have a course ID from instructor to access the online eText and the online material that will help you study. There is no option for "self study" so do not waste your time purchasing this unless you can convince your instructor to set up a course ID. Also customer service will not transfer the access code it is a package deal. I wish I knew this ahead of time.

I bought this workbook along with the Emergency Care Textbook. This workbook in an invaluable tool in the development of an EMT's skills. I am currently in an EMT Academy and have been using this book non stop to perfect my skills and continue my education. The information is the current AHA requirement for EMT students and is easily understood and easy to use. This workbook was also the cheapest I found anywere and recommend anyone looking for the Workbook and Textbook for an EMT school to buy them here. Its the complete package for everything you need to succeed. I rate it at FIVE STARS and I will continue to use this book everyday.

Excellent study guide for me & my high school students.

The definitive text for prehospital care. Good pictures and scenarios. Strait forward and easy to understand.This version came with MyBradyLab. MyBradyLab is an excellent resource and I strongly recommend it.

My major bone is that many of the images of females in this book are not in an anatomical position, whereas the male counterparts are... I find this a grave oversight and an indicator of how truly engrained sexism is in American culture. Head turned to side, hands on hips... it’s disgraceful. That said, the content is superior and the additional Pearson resources are preparing me well for an EMS future.

Exactly what I needed for my EMT course. Came with mybradylabs user code. Book plastic was opened on the bottom, and small dent on bottom of book,makes me wonder if this is a return.. But seems good otherwise

While there may be some conflicts, the real ones are on a matter of truth and principalities, wherein what science can help reveal about the natural world can provide understanding of how things work, and the Church can synthesize these things into what the natural world reveals about God and His creation. When authentic science and religion work together, miracles can happen, and even be granted greater reasoning and meaning for both faith and scientific understanding.

Benjamin Wiker's book titled THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCIENCE: ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS AND EXPOSING THE MYTHS is a short but informative account of the History of the Catholic Church and scientific scholarship. Wiker was clear that many Catholic authorities carefully studied nature and the Cosmos in an attempt to understand the mystery of God's Creation and to make an intelligent responses to materialists and those who argued that Creation was achieved by random chance.The introduction to this book dealt with Lucrecius (c.99-c.55 BC)and Epicurius (c. 341-c.270 BC)who argued that men are predestioned by material forces over which they have little or no control. Wiker compared these concepts with Calvin's (1509-1564)view of predestination which Catholic authorities ardently opposed. Wiker also demolished the false notion that Catholic authorities opposed science by citing the SECULAR historian J.L. HEIBRON who showed that Catholic dignataries lavished wealth on scientific research. The Vatican Observatory is such an example. During the early history of the Catholic Church, astronomical studies were crucial if only to get the correct dates of Lent, Easter, Advent, etc.As readers may know, the early Christians were "radicals." To paraphrase G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936)men can easily have let an age to have its head but difficult to keep one's own head. Catholic authorities did not dictate science, and St. Augustine (354-430 AD) gave the Ancient Greeks credit for their work re science and mathematics.A recent trend that Wiker noticed is that honest historicans have checked sources and documents which clearly show that Medieval Catholic scholars contributed much to scientific inquiry.Northhead (1861-1947)showed that modern science depended on Medieval Catholic scientific studies. The fact that astrology and horoscopes were and are in vogue is obvious, but Catholic scholars and authorities condemned such concepts including St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)and the Medieval Catholic Popes.Another popular myth that Wiker exposed was the nonsensical view that during the "Dark Ages," Catholics thought the earth was flat. St. Jerome (346-420), St. Ambrose (347-397), etc. knew the earth was round and had studied the work of Erastothanes (276-196 BC)who demonstrated the earth was round. Early Catholics including Boethius (480-525)also knew that compared to the universe, the earth was infinately small. Pope Sylvester II (999-1003)was well aware that the earth was an orb.Wiker provided a list of "Who's Who" re Medieval Cathholic Churchmen who contributed so much to scientific study. Wiker mentioned Robert Grosseteste (c.1170-1253)who accurately predicted tides, comets, the light spectrum of rainbows, etc. Father Roger Bacon (1214-1294)did original work re teleccopes and is considered by some historians as The Father of the Scientific Method. Father John Peckham (1230-1292)did original work in optics. Richard Wallingford (1282-1336) did complex celestial tables and improved the mechanical clock. One could write "a five foot book shelf" on other Catholic dignitaries and other Catholic Churchmen who did so much effective scientific research. Another aspect of Medieval university learning was that much of what was taught was mathematical.Wiker gave a good account of the Catholic scholarship during Early Modern European History. Wiker among others debunked the myths that Copernicus (c.1473.1543)was persecuted but actually was encouraged to publish his heliocentric theory as a theory. Galileo (1564-1627)WAS NEVER imprisoned and NEVER tortured. He spent his brief "incarciration" either in Florentine Ambassador's residence or the Papal Palace where he had his own chef and wine tester. In fact, Pope Benedict XIV (1740-1758)gave his Impramatur to ALL of Galileo's work. Furthermore, Pope Paul V (1605-1621)arranged a special celebration for Galileo in 1610. Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644), the Pope during Galileo's arrest, honored Galileo in 1624. Galileo had trouble because he was a rude guest and ungrateful to anyone who helped him but who disagreed with with him.Wiker's chapter on evolution and Darwinism clarified the Catholic Church's position re evolution. Wiker was clear that Catholic authorities DO accept evolution and c. 4 1/2 billion geological history of the earth. Catholic authorities also accept the c. 14 billion astronomical history of the universe. In fact, when Hubble (1889-1953) announced his Big Bang Theory in 1929 the Big Bang Theory implied a beginning of Creation. Father LeMaitre, S.J. (1894-1966), who was close friends with Einstein (1879-1955),produced a mathematical model of an expanding universe. What Catholics do reject in the random theory that men and women and life are a chance combination of elements and molecules. Wiker provided a clear analysis of how delecate the creation of conditions of life are and how complex life is which is well beyond any random theory. Wiker cited Cardinal Schonborn's book titled CREATION AND EVOLUTION as a source to examine the debate. Basically Catholic authorities accept evolution but reject Darwinian materialism and random selection. People are much more than their chemical composition. Bascially the Big Bang Theory implies a beginning or Creation which is reasoned conclusion. To deny scientific reality is to make a mockery of religion per St. Thomas Aquinas. The earth is galactical good real estate.Wiker produced a chapter re ETs. With all the money and effort spent, there is not one shred of evidence of ETs in spite of the films and tv series which promote such a belief. The only thing space probes have show is silent static. Wiker provided the space and time impossibility of ETs. Speculations taken as truth have exited for hundreds of years without any proof whatsover of ETs.Wiker gave a short reading last in his Conclusion which should help readers know more about biology, astronomy, chemistry/physic, etc. His book is not long, but Wiker has a knack of "making serveral points with an exceptional economy of words." The book was very easy to read. It presented its topic in a very clear, logical way. The book brought up several ideas that I had never thought of. The Church is not anti-science. The Church has been consistent in its refusal to accept materialism and other heretical ideas. I would strongly recommend this book.

Written as a stream of consciousness, Nadya shares her experiences and thoughts on the state of things and how we as individuals can still have our say and try to make a difference in the world.It's a fast read and easy to digest, with each chapter (aka Rules) broken into three segments: Words, Deeds & Heroes. Words covers various topics like Questioning the Status Quo, the Prison Industrial Complex and What Putin Has to Do with Trump.Deeds encompasses things we can all do- Dadaism, If the Kids are United, Art in Action and Pussy Riot Church (a Russian church that was more like a mini-mart or a venue hall).Heroes explores the figures who've influenced Nadya's life and outlook- King, the Berrigan Brothers, Bell Hooks, Emmeline Pankhurst and Aleksandra Kollontai.Equally intriguing is the recommended reading list at the end of the book, which offers up some pretty good stuff to feed your head and free your mind. Â If nothing else, you'll end up with a crash course on activist ideas and a view from the front lines delivered by a person who's still there.

This is an excellent and inspiring book. I checked it out of the library as an e-book, but I'm going to buy a printed copy so I can refer to it regularly. What is most inspiring to me, a rather timid person, is how the Pussy Riot women conquered their fears and kept going in spite of the punishment meted out to them. Being an activist in the US is a piece of cake compared to what being an activist is like under Putin. Who knows how long that difference will last the way things are going. If we don't individually and collectively take action to save our civilization from drowning in the sea of lies put forth by the neo-Fascists strutting the world stage, who will? The America that helped rescue the world from Hitler's and Hirohito's tyranny no longer exists.

A riveting look at how and why a sensitive and bright young woman ended up in a cult—without realizing it. I loved going along on this journey, and watching the author learn and grow. Written in stunning prose, I was carried along, amazed by the power of thought to create our experience. In the end, we're all the same. This could happen to anyone—even an astute, gifted wordsmith like Helen Zuman. Brava! Loved it! So closely observed, honest, and brave.

First I’d like to say right up front that I am a former Zendik. I lived at Zendik Farm Commune as a Zendik from early 1986 until my departure in early 1990. Among the Zendiks I was called Kezo.The author, Helen Zuman, and I have never met. Her time among the Zendiks occurred many years after I’d moved on.I love Helen Zuman for writing this book! Many, many people have lived among the Zendiks over the 30 plus years The Farm existed. Some stayed only the briefest time, and others stayed for decades. Some left Zendik Farm emotionally destroyed, and others left with mostly happy memories. As far as I know, very few have written about their time spent living at Zendik Farm, and I doubt any will ever write a more honest, unflinching account than Zuman has.Helen’s book is essential reading for anyone who ever lived at Zendik, for everyone who ever had dealings with the Zendiks, and perhaps even for those who have heard of the Zendiks.The account you’ll read in this book of what Zendik Farm was really like is dramatically different from my own experience of Zendik Farm. I know beyond a shadow of doubt that there was real genius in Wulf Zendik’s philosophical teachings. (Wulf Zendik established and ruled Zendik Farm until the decline of his health and his eventual death in June 1999, before Helen Zuman’s arrival.) I moved to Zendik on my twenty-first birthday in 1986, and I know absolutely that Wulf’s teachings and guidance set my entire life on a course for happiness, self-determination, and success. I will always love Wulf for that.In the pages of Helen Zuman’s book, “Mating in Captivity”, you’ll read of an entirely different kind of experience.This book is a page turner! I could not put it down. The author has a finely tuned sense of rhythm and a keen feel for language that puts the reader right in the middle of her story. The raw honesty with which the author spins her tale of shame and fear (her own and others), of sexual awakening and of a young life interrupted, invokes in spirit and vibrant energy the likes of Henry Miller (author of “Tropic of Cancer”), William S. Burroughs (author of “Naked Lunch”), and Henry Bukowski (author of “Ham on Rye” and “Factotum”).To be fair, I will not be recommending this book to family and friends, even though I very much enjoyed reading Helen’s stories from first to last. I will not recommend this book to loved ones because Helen Zuman’s account of Zendik Farm left me feeling ashamed of my time as a Zendik in a way I have never felt ashamed of those years before. That said, any book that makes us think and feel is an important book worth reading.For anyone who does not personally know me, you must read this book!

The author has come transparently to this page. Her words are alive and create a vibrant reality with the heart of the reader, a reality where I, too, could have lived. Who has not experienced harsh judgement, and who experiencing harsh judgement has avoided internalizing it?The cult isolates, the cult nurtures, the cult disciplines. The individual is fed by fear and love.This is a book for the curious. It will stay with this reader for quite some time.

Zuman's account of her post college graduation years at Zendik - a Farm, commune, community, cult - goes beyond any autobiographical narration. Her reflections of her experiences are shown in her wanderlust for self-discovery, love, validation, and belonging. She gives her reader a deep insight into her journey through a very complicated, confusing world.

Helen is a marvelous writer. In Mating in Captivity, she's written an engrossing and relatable narrative built out of her personal experience at Zendik Farm. It's a cliché, but I couldn't put the book down. I loved this book and look forward to what's next from this author.

I enjoyed this story, although I ended up quite annoyed by the character/author. She doesn't manage to tell us much about herself at the beginning, and it takes a while to learn what she is like, which we do from what other characters say to her and from her actions towards others. She is criticized many times by others as being competitive in a bad way, but she never seems to see this flaw in herself and instead celebrates that she got the best grades on tests in high school - who cares? She seems selfish, clueless, and not capable of making good decisions. She is obsessed by sex, but repeatedly discards budding sexual relationships or undermines them through outrageous self-centeredness and horniness. She thinks she's so smart, but ends up bumbling from one aimless activity to another, often through dangerous and risky behavior like solo hitch-hiking or hiking and traveling by herself. I found myself NOT so concerned with the oppressive and mind-controlling politics of the commune/cult, which I think is what the book is supposed to be about, and much more concerned with just what dumbo mistake this young woman was going to make next. I was very happy that she ended up married to a lovely man, and I guess she just finally GREW UP.I found the language lively and compelling, if at times a bit contrived. Sometimes I thought the imagery and writing were great, and other times, I sighed to read "His eyes twinkled with mischief" or similar, yet again. Once or twice the writing was too obscure and I couldn't make sense of what she was talking about.The other characters, meaning most of the people in the cult or her family, or people she met up with outside of the cult, mushed together a bit. I didn't feel that most of them came alive distinct from each other. Yet another earnest young man that she does or doesn't sleep with, and then dumps, kind of. As a writer, she gave us plenty of conversations, meaning he said, then she said, with quotes around the words. I found these not to be that well done - everybody sounded the same and talked the same way. The author missed opportunities to bring the characters more alive through additional crafting of the conversations.I loved it that she was so frank about how she learned about sex and I thought she did a wonderful job writing about sex and relationships. She comes across as being rather mechanistic about sex, rather than romantic, which I think is great. She has a few horrific experiences involving sexual assault and wonders if she brought them on herself, and I do too, sort of, wonder the same thing. Where are her self-protection instincts? Doesn't she know that the world is full of predators - every girl knows this. She arranges for a truly nasty fake-rape setup that seems super unfair to the man involved, and I was glad that she tells us that she apologized to him years later. This episode was very well described and quite moving and compelling.I know that memoir is only meant to tell the story of part of your life, but I found it odd that she went to Harvard and tell us almost nothing about her time there. Surely that would be an important time in your life? She took a year off during college, so this was a five year span. During this time we are to believe that she had no romantic relationships. How can this be? She isn't ugly and in fact is good looking in an intense sort of way - how can such a horny young woman spend five years without dating anybody? This makes me distrust her voice a little bit, because I have a big question about what she was up to and what she was like during those five, supposedly formative years.Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author is obviously serious-minded about her craft and she put in a lot of effort to write a book that told her story well, namely the story of an annoying, clueless and horny young woman trying to find happiness and repeatedly escaping danger and disaster. I didn't think this book had much new to say about living in a commune that was actually a cult, but it did tell that story well also.

I bought a copy of this for someone I care about who did have some run ins and has been in trouble with criminal activity. I have to say I am very impressed with the amount of examples that it shares for emphasizing the good & minimizing the not so good. They have a lot of tips & tons of detailed examples.
