good book to understand how Fusion apps works at a high level. essential reading for users of JD Edwards, Peoplesoft or Oracle eBusiness suite to understand what lies ahead when Oracle reduces investment in these products over the next twenty years and puts more resources into Fuaion apps.this book is entertaining to read, compared to other ERP books and gives you a good overview of how far Fusion Apps has come. because it is published by Oracle, it does at times apear to be biased and not mention any weaknesses of the software architecture. but, in the absense of any other books out there, this book contains invaluable knowledge for those wanting to jump of the Fusion Apps bandwagon early.

It's a good book - that goes over much of the system administration required for Fusion Applications.It is well written and makes sense to the lay person - so bravo.This does not however go into the functionality of the individual Fusion Modules.For that - go to Docs.Oracle.Com and look up the apps of interest in the user guide section.

Fusion Applications is a bigger change than you realize. It's a bigger change than I realized.If I had seen this book on the shelf I would have flipped through it and dismissed it. It lookslike a lot of descriptions of acronyms made up of other acronyms -- recursive acronyms. ButI did read it, and I'm glad I did. The move to Fusion Applications requires moving to openstandards and that requires learning about all those acronyms.I need to be prepared to support Fusion Applications. I found many resources and amongthem were three books from Oracle Press. This is one of them, along with WebLogic Server11g Administration Handbook and Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Architecture andManagement. Since I have reviewed other Oracle Press books, they sent me copies of eachto read and review.Reading this book really helped me understand just how big a change the move to FusionApps will be. The description of the history of Oracle Applications, both those developedby Oracle and those acquired by Oracle, is the best I've ever seen. It provides the contextI've been looking for to really understand why this change is happening and why it has tobe such a big change.I understand that many Oracle professionals that currently support Oracle Enterprise Suiteand other products in what is now called Oracle Applications Unlimited will be looking forresources that show them the technical details of implementing and supporting FusionApplications. This book will not appear to be relevant since it doesn't attempt to addressthose issues. However, Fusion Applications is not just Applications Unlimited with somenew stuff bolted on the side. It is a complete overhaul and integration of all the variousapplications products with some new stuff mixed in. Wrapping your head around all thisrequires a high-level review and that is what this book provides.Unlike most books I've reviewed, this one has some of the best information in the introduction.Don't skip it. In the first few pages we find - "The structure of this book is intended to help youfirst build a basic understanding of Fusion Applications..." Indeed, and you need this high-leveloverview to get that basic understanding. From "A Brief History" onward, this `introduction'helped me the most. It gave me the context I was looking for, explaining how the evolution ofapplications, access and user experience all led to Fusion Applications.Fusion Applications is a big change. This means that persons with experience in the currentOracle applications offerings will need to embrace change. Most people will be new to FusionApplications so this is also a great time to get started. This book is a good way to get exposedto just how much is new and different. You won't learn how to install Fusion Applications,but, whether you accept it or not, you really do need to become comfortable with all the newideas, acronyms and processes that make up Fusion Applications. This book is a very high-levelview of what will be involved in managing Fusion Applications. I think everyone involved wouldbenefit from reading this book.

I now have a copy of this book having seen it promoted at Oracle Open World in San Francisco this year and it has become a foundation for my undertstanding of Fusion. The author has pitched this just right, logical divisions, easy starts and then deeper dives to all the mysterious areas of a Fusion installation and use.I originate from the JD Edwards stable and despite much retraining into the Fusion Middleware, I needed this book to fully understand the transition and feel happy with the operational aspects of Fusion Applications. The Software is now General Availability and I would endorse this book for anyone converting from other products as well as those coming from EBS, as everyone needs to understand the 'delta' involved.

Fusion Applications are here already and I was trying to find some text to go along with the limited training out there for Implementers and technology Managers - I am impressed by how the author has lifted the veil surrounding the much awaited Fusion applications and the technology platform it is built on. Would serve as a great reference for any Implementation or before you get to the product training or documentation. Excellent and easy read!!

The book was missing several chapters: it only had 2 essays by Benjamin and it was supposed to have 10 or so, and was only 109 pages as opposed to about 280. Specifically, it did not have Work and Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.

This was a pretty excellent (and challenging) survey of Benjamin's work, with included pieces mostly concerning storytelling and particular literary figures (e.g., Kafka, Proust, Leskov). I'd say this collection is particularly helpful in that it proceeds, as I read it, thematically. The editor's introductory piece isn't really worth reading--mostly just a reflection on Benjamin's "continuing importance", pretty standard (though I will say his criticisms of Benjamin, like his reluctance to give in to Scholem, amount more to complaints than critiques). In contrast, I found Arendt's essay incredibly enlightening. She relates not only much of the content of Benjamin's thought, but offers insight into his personal life (e.g., his experience in the Parisian Arcades, his collective impulses) that assists greatly in understanding the experience motivating some of Benjamin's analyses (e.g., of the crowd, of the collector, of the character of the flaneur). In some retellings, as in his chronic financial/employment troubles or the unfortunate coincidences leading to his suicide, a sense of melancholy or "bad luck" is almost palpable, particularly given Arendt's close relation to Benjamin.As for the essays themselves, anyone who has read Benjamin is aware of how challenging the prose (if we may call it that) is. As Arendt notes in her introduction, Benjamin is a poetic thinker, and tends both to assume a fair amount of foreknowledge and employ sophisticated (and often extended) figurative devices, e.g., simile, to relate his points. Contrast this with the geometric prose of Spinoza and other modern philosophers, with their numbered axioms, definitions, propositions, etc. In his essay on Proust, for example, Benjamin likens the weight of scent in memory to the weight of the fisherman's net by which he gauges his catch, and sentences to the physical labor required to haul it up. There is also some evidence of his on-again-off-again Marxist tendencies (which embarrassing fact, combined with his ambivalence between this commitment and Zionism, is acknowledged in the introduction to the collection), as in his late essay on art modified by mechanical reproduction, plus the more obvious shoehorning of concepts like "class struggle" and "proletarianization". Nevertheless, this is a fantastic collection which ought to attract both old and new readers of Benjamin--I know I'll be buying Reflections, Illuminations' spiritual companion, and at least some of his standalone work.

This edition of Illuminations is incomplete. It only contains three essays ("Unpacking My Library," "Task of the Translator" and "The Storyteller"), none of which are Benjamin's most well-known. Spend the extra five bucks to get the Schocken Books edition: Illuminations: Essays and Reflections.

Walter Benjamin put everything he knew into everything he wrote. It all resonates. This makes for challenging reading - at times, it seems like what he is saying is simply too much at a tilt with everything one thinks one knows to seem comprehensible. Then, suddenly, one tilts, and the extraordinary reach, eloquence and power of this man's reading hits home. Benjamin is difficult in the only legitimate way - because what he is trying to say can be said no other way.

Good selection of Walter B's between-the-wars brilliant insights. In clear translations. Highly recommended to those interested in memory, Proust, and insights into a troubled political and social environment

I ordered this version, but instead received the version with the orange and white cover. Be careful!

The translation by Harry Zohn must be acknowledged as a masterpiece. Fitting in a work that contains Benjamin's essay "The task of the translator", I wonder if our author wrote in German as beautifully as has been rendered into English. If so Walter Benjamin must be counted as a great literary mind besides one of the finest intellectuals. The introduction by Hanna Arendt crowns the jewel of a book that speaks to everyman and for all times.

A good view of a past that never became present. Benjamin's self-martyrdom might be more significant than his writings since people generally tend to prefer melodrama to sociology these days. Unless you have to read this for class, I recommend you read more contemporary theorists.
