I really like iBatis, and am grateful to Begin for writing it. I've used it for several years, and recommend it. But I hate this book. The author quotes himself as having said that iBatis would be a failure if there had to be a book written about it. The problem is, although he changed his mind about writing the book, he never changed his mind about there being no need for a book. The implicit narrative thread running throughout this book is, "iBatis is so simple, so self-evident, you don't need a book", and so, instead of writing a tutorial/reference book, he has written a pastiche of anecdotes about how to implement his sample project. Here's the problem: instead of breaking out a section, for example, on how to handle stored procedures that would start with an overview, then go through get object, get list, update, insert, execute, how to deal with custom data types, how to get your result as a return from the procedure call as opposed to putting it into an OUT or INOUT parameter; instead of doing that, along the way to other things, he shows an embedded example of how to use a stored proc in a particular case.I can see that the major problem he had to solve in writing this book was how he was going to manage to fill enough pages for it to be a book rather than an article. He rambles on, talking *about* topics rather than *in* topics, skimming along, rather than digging in.I recommend the book simply because it's the only one out there, but I think you'll find that it's fine if all you want to do is learn *about* iBatis, but that if you have specific questions on how to implement certain things, or solve very real problems, you'll wind up frustrated and disappointed.

I found it easier to make things running using free manuals available from same authors. Something is wrong with the way information presented. Didn't feel bad about buying the book just because I paid $5 for new book at amazon

Very well written and introduces reader to the concept of sql mapping and iBatis DAO. Clear explanations and simple to the point language makes it a enjoyable learning resource.Highly recommended. Also see developer-guide and tutorial from Ibatis site directly for additional references.A second edition covering Ibator and new features would be nice.

As Authors mentioned and I totally agree, IBATIS is relatively small framework that does what it says it does very well, I have used it before and the only reason I bought this book was to have a reference guide. and it does exactly that very very well, IBATIS is not complicated concept it does not need 800 pages, this book is something One can look over and over again for techniques and ways to use for example dynamic SQL appenders etcno more digging through Google or through, not so clear, official IBATIS reference guide.

claro y conciso..con ejemplos puntuales ,, este libro se deja entender a pesar de estar en ingles y de que mi nivel en java no es tan alto.

Having suffered through Hibernate and also done pure JDBC projects before, I became ecstatic upon reading the iBATIS Developer's Guide (pdf) freely available on the iBATIS web site. From there, I decided to read the iBATIS book to get more in depth knowledge.PROS====+ Gives you the philosophy and background about the technology about how iBATIS came about. If you are trying to pitch this technology to your team you'll find nearly every positive/negative angle has been covered. There can be much pain caused by choosing the wrong approach at this layer, and sometimes people may not be aware of the pain they cause. Some may even be unaware that there are better alternatives such as iBATIS.+ Broad in its coverage. Touches on how to use iBATIS in several common environments. Gives background on transactions and isolation choices. Introduces the DAO pattern to those unfamiliar with it. So this book is much more than about iBATIS thankfully.+ Covers advance topics such as how to write your own cache or transactional manager. Ideally you shouldn't but the information is there if need be.CONS=====> Organization problems. For example, when you are first learning about the 'select' tag, you are just shown the basics (and I mean really basic) along with the basics for delete, update, and insert. A few chapters later you get to learn the advanced stuff. I'd prefer a chapter just on 'select' and Result Maps including some examples of a object graph (complex objects). Then another chapter on inserts and parameterMaps... You get the idea. This would greatly help in learning process in my opinion.=> The book does need a second edition to cover some of the changes done to iBATIS 2. But don't look for that anytime soon as iBATIS 3 is in beta and I think all their energy will go to that en devour.=> Not enough coverage on iBATIS with Spring. I think the popularity of Spring warrants a full example of integrating iBATIS with Spring.FINAL THOUGHTS==============iBATIS reminds me of technology crafted by those who learned from all the wrong ways of doing things to come together with a well-though out technology that puts the pleasure back into the persistence/DOA layer. Rarely are books written by the authors of the technology written in a clear manner -- but this book is an exception as I enjoy these author's clarity. Yes, and I agree with other reviewers that there should be more examples in this book. However despite my minor complaints, this book (and iBATIS) has been very helpful to me. I recommend the book for those using iBATIS 2. If you are going with iBATIS 3, this book may not be of much value other than for the philosophy sections. In that case, you might as well read those first 1-2 chapters in the book store and save yourself some money.

I now have a much better insight into iBatis because the authors provided both background design and detailed information about the product. It was much better than the documentation I found via the web (there's lots to be said for technical and editorial review of a book). The setup and code examples are excellent. I also like the writing style and structure of the book. Clear and logical. However, I would like an expanded section on using the Spring DAO with iBatis, as this is now the recommended approach over the iBatis DAO.Although I was already using iBatis, this book is a welcome addition to my library.

I picked this up because I am a jew officer in the Army Medical Service Corps and this book is on the Corps Chief's reading list. I am not sure how useful this book's content would be in the army, as a lot of this "feel-good" type of leadership is typically frowned upon, but it had some good key points that could apply to even military leadership.Like others said, it is a very easy read. Rather campy at times, a bit too self aware, and full of what some might consider some shameless self-promotion (the writers use their own businesses as prime examples several times). Still, it refreshed my thinking about leadership, and could be useful as a topic of discussion, especially its key points about employee engagement.

This book emphasizes feelings at the expense of making actual improvements. An example from the book illustrates my problem with it. A physician's practice had real problems with long waits. The physicians threw money at the problem by hiring more physicians. No go. Then they change the scheduling software. Still no improvement. Did they then engage the staff to look at their processes for waste, errors, and the root causes of unnecessary delays? Ha! No way! They "fixed" the problem by apologizing to patients over and over again. They apologized in advance when the patient checked in and was sent to wait in the waiting room. They apologized when the patient was taken to the exam room (another delay.) The physician apologized when s/he finally arrived. They apologized when the patient checked out. (For all I know they made follow up calls and apologized after the patient went home.) The result: improved patient satisfaction scores! Viola! Problem solved!Of course, there are still long waits for service. But never mind, the patient comes second after all. Their time isn't important, only the satisfaction score they report. And whether the employees feel good about themselves. If you believe this approach works in the long-term, then this book is for you. If you're the type who, you know, wants to improve patient satisfaction by addressing the root causes of dissatisfaction, find another book.

You don't take care of the kids until you out your own oxygen on first! This sums up this powerful book that asks the question - how can you set patient experience as your goal and not know/care how your employees are doing? They craft a brilliant argument that unless organizational health is addressed it is futile to accomplish any goal(s). They take Lencioni to the next level by showing how caring for employees leads to greater engagement which leads to better outcomes, greater safety, growth and improved finances and most importantly better Health Care. Bravo to Spiegelman and Berrett.

Good book: 70% recycled info from other leadership books you've read, but 30% interesting/new information. An easy read. I read this book in a weekend. Helpful culture IQ ("CIQ") quiz in the back (for your staff to take). Buy it.

This was a good read. I liked the perspective that is not often followed in management that happy employers are more effective at delivering your product so to speak. I think it provides a unique look at healthcare management that provides a balancing perspective in patient drive care models.

Everyone entering medical school, nursing school, physician assistants school or any of the other health sciences trading programs should read this before starting. Our educational programs are excellent at teaching medical knowledge, however most fall short on professionalism and interpersonal communication skills. This is an excellent primer!!!

more of a "look what we did" sort of book, some good ideas, but overall only fair.

Brilliant! I loved this book so much and got so much value out of it, I just bought the Kindle version after reading and underlining every other line in the hardcover version. As a recent cancer survivor, lifelong "perpetual patient" and customer service expert, I have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to "patient care". This book convincingly builds the case for more compassionate care being essential to better outcomes, compliance etc, and that in the ever more competitive health "care" business, such care or its lack, will likely mean the difference between success or survival for many medical organizations. More importantly, the authors teach you, from their experience doing so, HOW to go about building a "culture" that will result in the kind of loving care patients want and need in order to remain loyal for a lifetime. NO matter what business you are in, healthcare or otherwise, read this book. LOVE your employees and they will reciprocate in kind with your customers. So simple and yet profoundly accurate and actionable. Well done!

I loved everything about this book. Best thriller/drama/mystery I’ve read in awhile! I was addicted... reading it nonstop. Character development was spot on and I felt like I was inside their heads. Even though I felt like I knew everything, I was still hit with twists. Amazing.

2 1/2 ⭐️‘sWhile this book did have me flipping pages at first, I found the plot to be completely implausible and the detective to be a bumbling oaf. All of the characters were totally unlikable leaving no one to root for. There was a bit of language throughout, but at times its use was cringe worthy. The twist at the end was suppose to leave doubt, but, unfortunately, it just didn’t work the way it should have. Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

An entertaining novel of psychological intrigue, “Confidential” (2019) is the second book written by Ellie Monago. Dr. Michael Baylor, a never-married highly respected behavioral therapist was found dead in his Oakland California office. When homicide detective Gregory Plath arrived to investigate, he quickly determined that perhaps Dr. Baylor’s “sterling reputation” may not have been the entire truth.Detective Plath needed to investigate Dr. Baylor’s patients, particularly the three patients who seemed to have been in love with the good therapist. Flora, Lucinda and Greer had their own individual motives for murder and had met together in a local restaurant before Dr, Baylor’s death.Flora: With her husband Young, the couple had sought Dr. Baylor to assist in getting their marriage back on track. Did Dr. Baylor manipulate this mildly troubled couple’s divorce so he could have Flora for himself? Flora had completely and totally fallen in love with “Michael” and would push him to go public with their secret relationship after the required two year waiting period for therapist client involvement had passed. Flora’s cousin Kate had uncovered some disturbing accusations against Dr, Baylor by former clients.Lucinda: An only child, raised by a reformed addict and her step-father Adam, who had induced a serious mental illness in Lucinda relating to their guilt ridden sexual relationship. Although Lucinda struggled to come to terms “under the spell of an evil person,” she taught writing workshops and was bored with her job as a proof-reader. Lucinda began to unravel when Adam was placed in a Hospice care and her mother mysteriously disappeared.Greer: A single feminist career business administrator determined she had missed out by avoiding motherhood. While in therapy with Dr. Baylor, as her biological clock was winding down, all the donor profiles she had studied for artificial insemination were not as “perfect” as Dr. Baylor. Indeed, Dr. Baylor would agree and meet with Greer’s legal team to sign paperwork, but at what cost? With three of Dr. Baylor’s clients clearly enthralled with their love and desire for him, they discover they are not his “one and only”. Themes of obsession and delusion, stalking, transference take on new meanings. Furthermore, would Dr. Baylor risk his professional reputation to unethically seek and manipulate clients for his own needs and sexual gratification? Detective Plath believed without question he had figured out who had murdered Dr, Baylor, despite the fact he had been denied access by the court to clients medical records due to stringent privacy laws. This is a gripping fast-paced murder-mystery drama and there is never a dull moment in this reading experience. ~ 4* Excellent. **With thanks and appreciation to Lake Union Publishing via NetGalley for the DDC for the purpose of review.

Dr. Michael Baylor was a successful psychotherapist, especially when it came to his female patients. However, he is now dead and the detective in charge of the case has three potential suspects, Flora, Lucinda and Greer, Detective Gregory Flath certainly has his work cut out for him. Each woman has a different story. Lucinda is trying to deal with childhood trauma. Greer is a career-driven woman who suddenly is desperate for a child, and is trying to work out the hows and whys. Then there is Flora, who started seeing Dr. Baylor for marriage counseling along with her husband Young. As far as Flora is concerned, she began an affair with Dr. Baylor and they have been intimate for two years. As much as Flora might be in love with him, she is definitely just as obsessed. This is even to the point of resenting Dr. Baylor's time with his female patients. Each woman, as things slowly reveal, is caught up in secrets and lies, and thus presenting a motive. Detective Flath is forced to question each of them at length, especially since doctor-patient privilege stands even after Dr. Baylor's death.Confidential is delivered in knife-sharp precision in the past and present. Presently, the story is told from the detective's point of view. As far as the past is concerned, each woman's story is relayed. It becomes rather easy to see why these women need a therapist. To a large degree, each one of them is unraveled, falling apart at various times for various reasons. There is not a single likeable character in this story! Yet, it is compelling from page one. Along with the detective, the job of the reader is to ascertain which of the woman is responsible for the murder of Dr. Baylor. Read well. Read carefully, as there are a lot of clues along the way. What a book! I could not put it down, except for when my body demanded sleep. Otherwise, this would have been a one-sitting read. I enjoyed the writing style of Ellie Monago. I am certain that her real-life job as a therapist went a long way when it came to getting into the minds of Flora, Lucinda and Greer, all the while seeing how manipulative Dr. Baylor actually was.I definitely found a new favorite author! So much so that I was forced to put aside what I had planned next to read in order to read her previous novel, Neighborly, which was equally engaging. I will be looking forward to anything else this immensely talented author pens. Many thanks to Lake Union Publishing and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is an extremely well written book. They call it a children's book, but it is equally well-suited for adults. Written in a very factual manner with no opinions. I am not a Muslim, and bought it purely to understand the life of the Prophet (PBUH).

A very good starter book to give a novice a starting point on the Life of the Prophet. I am 53 and a young friend suggested this book. She said it is a child's book but one that will help you START to understand the background.

This book is perfect for kids above 7 years. The language and layout is simple, the chapters are not too long and all the important events have been described. Very well written and its hard to put the book down once you start.

Great!!!

As expected

perfect for kids

Great book

This is a wonderful biography about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). I would highly recommend it for the casual reader, particularly in giving dawah to a non-Muslim. However, it's a good read for anyone and an excellent summary of the Prophet's life.

Review

“This is art history live.” ―Massimiliano Gioni, Director of Special Exhibitions, The New Museum of Contemporary Art“To match Tomkins in art of the brief life for keenness of wit and sharpness of observation, one must go back to Lytton Strachey.” ―Louis Auchincloss“Tomkins's access is astonishing . . . A deft biographer, he gives a lesson in his craft: how to balance present with past, the specific with the general, personality with context, features with flaws--all in the space of 20 pages. Tomkins is a ruthless observer. . . . He is also a generous critic of the cult of artistic personality. . . . Books [from] the New Yorker have become a small industry, but not all are as intimate as this one.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

I am a general reader and a general lover of the visual arts, who often finds contemporary conceptual art difficult to keep up with. I turn to books like Lives of the Artists in an attempt to keep current and for interesting conversation. Lives of the Artists, with its emphasis on the artists' lives rather than art genres and trends makes it more interesting conversation than edification, but that's okay.Tomkins, art critic for The New Yorker, had years of articles from which to choose, and he chose biography as his organizing theme, a la Giorgio Vasari, of the movers and shakers in the contemporary international art world. His selection skews to the most controversial, provocative and/or innovative: Jasper Johns, Maurizio Cattelan, Cindy Sherman, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, James Turrell, Julian Schnabel, John Currin, Richard Serra and Matthew Barney. Tomkins does a good job of introducing the artist in a current scene, before cutting to the back story to scribe the arc of career, inspiration and critical reaction. This mostly works, though the first profile in the collection, of Damien Hirst, had the ring of a VH1 "Behind the Music" rock star story. Tomkins provides updates on each career, current as of 2008 when this book was prepared. Alas, there are no illustrations, no images of the subjects' work or of them. One thing I could not help but notice about the collection: though the author notes in his preface that there are thousands of working artists living and producing in New York City alone, and he had years of his own profiles to select from, he chose a line-up that is starkly white, and with the exception of Cindy Sherman, male. Women mostly appear as bit players in these stories, as girlfriends, wives, muses, studio assistants and, in a couple of instances, "porno" subjects. Is this representative of the world of art right now? It feels more like the night before the women's and civil rights movements injected a more inclusive diversity into our cultural reflection.

Capsule reviews of the lives and works ten important artists. No pics, which a critic quoted on the back cover claims to be an advantage. Yeah, yeah -- none of those distracting images! With the internet that's not a big disadvantage, but it's certainly more distracting to get up and google than to turn the page.Written in a breezy, well-informed style which I generally like -- I've read a number of Tomkins' books -- but several non sequiturs slipped by his editor. I occasionally got the feeling that the text had been dictated, with minimal revisions. But lots of good facts and impressions, from an author who has spent, in some cases, decades getting to know his subjects.

I love this writer. He has a bit of everything, intelligent, but not pretentious. Insightful and just enough juice. He has a sense of the times and ART. I LOVED Living Well is the Best Revenge, How can you not love that Title. I use it all the time to get through difficult times. This is a tremendous read, RICH and extremely resourceful. The subjects are all intelligent, successful human beings, a great study and the work is brilliantly portrayed, VIVID. Tomkins is an extremely visual writer. Brilliant. This is also an important piece of work for the Arts. Its a testament to the times of the artwork and the lives of the artists. Great Work.

I love this book. A great look at wildly different artists who have made their mark in Western culture and, thanks to Calvin Tomkins, in me. Interesting, intimate, personal but never fawning or self-conscious.One really big complaint though...not the writing but eBook technology: why is "performance" always spelled "per for mance?" Many other words were consistently mangled. Several sections were marred by this kind sloppy formatting that I seriously doubt was seen in the "analog" version. I think I deserve my money back. I'm sure if I submitted a manuscript with these kind of errors to Amazon, I'd be laughed out of a contract. Fix it!

Great profiles of contemporary artists by the New York writer Calvin Tompkins. By combining biography, personal interviews and insights into the craft of each artist, Tompkins leaves the reader feeling as if she had been there as well. Like their work or not, Tompkins helps you to understand it.

Great book! I do like the writing and conversation with different artist. It is worth to read it. I will read again when have more time.

Tompkins gets to know the artists, he visits their homes and studios, he parties with them and meets their significant others. He is not judgemental. He doesnt offer his opinions and for the duration of his essays I felt as if I had a window into the thought process and lives of the artists. This book is well worth reading if one is interested in art, especially contemporary art, and want to know about the artists who create it. It is readable, well written and fun.

Something of a back stage view of many of the hero's of this days art and no doubt the sight to today given to future generations. Excellent.
