Florence captures the conflict between billionaires looking to polish their images, the scientists clamoring for the project to be competed, and the most interesting group of all, the engineers simply trying to build a machine utterly distinct from anything that had gone before. To use Tom Wolfe's phrase, they all collaborate to "push the envelope" and build something utterly unique for an esoteric scientific purpose. The story flows from corporate boardrooms to vast laboratories expending as much money as fuel to attempt a seductively elegant but impossible process for casting quartz, to the mundane synthesis of the common pie pan or baby bottle with the grandest scale glass object to be built. The character of the utterly random band that finally designs the telescope, none of them actual telescope experts, reads like an international band of technologically adept brothers, working wonders with steel, glass, copper, Flying Horse Telescope Oil, and an intuitive feel for the behavior of glass on a microscopic scale, all fighting for that perfect moment. First Light. Beautiful and inspiring book.

I grew up knowing about the 200-inch telescope, but knew little about the details of us design or construction. This is a delightful tale of driven scientists, engineers, and technicians who spend decades building the “Perfect Machine.”I’d like to give 4.5 stars, but that’s not an option. Two complaints keep this review from awarding five stars:1) On the Kindle version, the footnotes are out of sync. Clicking on a footnote asterisk takes to to the wrong note, and you have to scroll dozens of pages away to find the right one.2) I know it would have added to the production cost and complexity, but this book just cries out for a good section of photographs, sketches, maps, etc. The author’s best efforts at describing the telescope’s mechanisms are not as effective as ten minutes browsing images on the Web.

Very informative as well as up to date (November 2018).Next, Ronald Florence, thank you for wonderful memories of a man not mentioned in your excellent book -- my dad, E.E. Shea. As a purchasing agent in the Astrophysics Machine Shop, Al Shea was thrilled by the 100-inch Mount Wilson telescope and grateful to be part of the construction of the 200-inch Palomar telescope. Every night at the supper table I would hear names like Bruce Rule, Mickey Sherburne, Fritz Zwicky, and Caltech's president, Robert Millikan. (Sherburne had hired my dad because their wives knew each other from nurses' training at Pasadena Hospital, which became the Huntington Memorial Hospital.) I was too young to understand the significance of these men and what they achieved.I'm glad you stressed that from about 1939 on, most of the efforts of the Astrophysical Machine Shop were on war work. My dad was a Canadian who never became a citizen, but he was soon approved for a Secret Clearance, because he had to understand the need for the material and materiel he ordered.One fact about the photo taken on the day the Palomar Observatory was dedicated: I was the only boy in the photo. Dad thought being there was more important than being in McKinley Junior High that day.

Well written, very informative and a good read. Be aware, however, the kindle edition does not contain any drawings, illustrations or diagrams. This is a significant flaw in a book that relies on the description of complex optical and mechanical systems in order to understand the functioning of the telescope and the difficulties in its construction.

This is a fabulous account of how the Hale Telescope came into being! There are several books that take the Hale Telescope into account but none to this degree ( to my knowledge). One, for example is Polomar, by Helen Wright, 1952. Although it may be out of print, it is (I am still reading it at this time) written by the biographer of Hale. It is written using the actual words of the people involved and as such should certainly be added to the "must read" list. But " The Perfect Machine" in my opinion stands alone. If you are interested in this account or history of this momentous accomplishment, please, take time to consider picking it as a read. Coming into being, before the Depression and between two great wars, it survived other setbacks like a flood, technology failure and even an earthquake. Publicly, it was received with incredulity and awe. I was born in 1949, the same year the Hale telescope took its first image of Hubble's Variable Nebula. It took some 30+ years to get there and it is still being used today. I think it is one of the best stories ever told about man's quest to push the boundaries of science and knowledge ever outward.

I was a beginner observer searching for a better type of telescope to study the heavens from my backyard. A simple problem, so I thought. This book was recommended to me by Amazon of all places. This Palomar journal is a captivating readable primer to understand the sciences of physics, optics and light involved for enjoyable night viewing. It has helped me set a practical goal for buying equipment and my expectations of it.Ronald Florence has a wonderful way of writing. He captures the complex human interaction and personalities involved in achieving difficult discovery and includes just enough science to educate and create want to learn more.

The problems with this book are part formatting, part source material. The fomatting is the worst part. There is no reason this book needs to still be in archaic english, complete with nonsensical spellings and grammar. It's incredibly distracting. And there are no quotation marks, meaning the poem goes from narrator-speak to character-speak with little warning. If your focus slips for even two seconds, you will be lost.This would be more forgivable if the poem itself were an engrossing read. But unfortunately, it isn't all it's cracked up to be. There are definitely some moving passages, but there is also a LOT of dull exposition and scenery description that goes on for far too long. And while some of the characters were interesting, 17th century women's studies hit Eve hard and drag the whole story down around her.This has some good parts to it, and for a free book, you can read those parts and delete at will. Have fun.

Amazon has the bad habit of lumping reviews of multiple editions of a book without regard as to author/editor or publisher, to the detriment of the buyer's choosing an edition, so I write to make a few comments on the 984,562 editions of "Paradise Lost" listed for purchase. I have used the titles as listed by Amazon to help find the editions I refer to, and, with the exception of the books by Kastan, Lanzara, and BookCaps, the ones I discuss below are ones I own and am familiar with.The version with an introduction and comments by Pullman has text that is large and readable, line numbers and some nice illustrations, taken from the first illustrated edition, published in 1688. It is a nice copy for those who want just the text of the poem. The text is based on Stephen Orgel's 2008 Paradise Lost (Oxford World's Classics) which has been modernized presumably with respect to capitalization, spelling and punctuation. The comments by Pullman are worthwhile, but, while he may be a very good writer, he is not a scholar of Milton. Unlike Orgel, there are no annotations or notes to explain Milton's often arcane language and allusions.For readers seeking annotated versions, I suggest the following.The ultimate edition of Milton Alastair Fowler's Milton: Paradise Lost: it has been called the Bible of Milton scholars; one review I saw called it suitable for graduate students majoring in Milton. It is one of the few available based on the first edition of "Paradise Lost", published in 1667, but Fowler states that it also includes the additions made in the second edition of 1674 --- the version that most of today's editors use. Know that Fowler has produced a very, very scholarly version with many, many notes, sometimes to the point that they leave only two or three lines of the poem on the page, so I strongly urge using the "Look Inside" feature before deciding to buy it. I recommend Fowler's 1998 Milton: Paradise Lost (2nd Edition) edition in used paperback ---- reissue in 2006 edition with a new cover and much higher price.The blurb from the publisher on the Pullman webpage misleads the reader by mentioning "This is the first fully-annotated, old-spelling edition ..." It ain't (as the small print says). I can't find the actual book this blurb refers to, there are several that might be the one mentioned. One such version, with very favorable recommendations, is Barbara K. Lewalski's 2007 Paradise Lost that reproduces the original language, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and italics of the 1674 text. Its annotations are on the same page. Again, I would again urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."(Incidentally, I was able to find a .pdf copy of it online).Another annotated edition, again with those on the same page, that sticks close to the original 1674 text (but with some minor modernization) is Merritt Y. Hughes' Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics), first published in 1935, and revised in 1962. It is advertised as one popular with college professors for their classes, whatever that may mean. From what I gather, Fowler has replaced Hughes as the scholarly version to use.The edition by Hughes was taken in 2003 by David Scott Kastan (Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics)) and edited more extensively, again with the annotations on the same page. Incidentally, Kastan's comments on how he edited, along with comments on any editor's choices when dealing with Milton, are well worth reading, and can be found under "Textual Introduction" using the "Look Inside" feature. I urge reading them to understand how and why there are so many different editions of Milton.Yet another annotated edition that comes close to the original is by John Leonard's Paradise Lost (Penguin Classics). The ad for this version states that the text has been modernized to the degree of reducing some capitals and italics, and correcting the spelling and some punctuation. It is annotated, but not to the degree of Fowler --- but the notes are at the back of the book rather than the bottom of the page as seems customary and which I personally find difficult to use because of constantly having to flip between pages. Again, I would urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."There are many other scholarly editions available in addition to the ones I have mentioned here, including one online at the John Milton Reading Room at Dartmouth College.For those who might like a less challenging version of "Paradise Lost", I suggest BookCaps "translation" (Amazon's words, not mine) Paradise Lost In Plain and Simple English or at an even less difficult level, Joseph Lanzara's John Milton's Paradise Lost In Plain English: A Simple, Line By Line Paraphrase Of The Complicated Masterpiece. Should those prove too difficult, there might be somewhere a copy by Classics Illustrated comics, although a search by Google turns up nothing --- perhaps they never published one.Since each edition of "Paradise Lost" has its strengths and weaknesses, how does the buyer go about selecting an edition for purchase? To me, it's rather like buying a car --- ultimately based upon personal preference, but in this case, rather than engine and body style, determined by the way the editor has modified Milton's language and added annotations, and their degree of adherence to his original language --- some editors produce as little modernization as possible to retain Milton's original meter and rhythm for reading aloud, while others try for a more modern sound. I would suggest using the "Look Inside" feature, to see what the editor has done, to help making a decision.Whichever edition you buy, may you find great enjoyment in reading what I consider the greatest epic poem in the English language --- although you might agree more with what Donald Sutherland's character, Jennings, had to say about it in the movie "Animal House": "Now what can we say about Milton's "Paradise Lost"? It's a very long poem. It was written a long time ago, and I'm sure a lot of you have difficulty understanding exactly what Milton was trying to say. ..... Don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too. He's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible."

I have three editions of Paradise Lost—Alastair Fowler's, Scott Elledge's and David Kastan's—, and this is definitely the most suited for my object and needs. David Kastan undertook a throughout update and revision of Merritt Y. Hughes' praised notes to Paradise Lost, and, although I haven't yet read Hughes' original work, I'm inclined to think that Kastan lives up to his illustrious predecessor. This edition includes a fine introduction to the poem, a glossary of uncanny words found in it, copious notes on historical, mythological and biblical allusions, and commentaries on Milton's style and poetics (they are neither as extensive nor as "scholarly" as Mr. Fowler's notes, but I find them more straightforward and elucidative to the average reader). Truly a work worthy of Milton's epic.

Milton is a genius, but the introduction and commentary on the poem are atrocious. It reminds me of Chesterton's comment about John and Revelation: "Though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature so wild as one of his own commentators."A far more helpful guide to Paradise Lost is Leland Ryken's volume in his series Christian Guides to the Classics. The detail is not as granular, but it's a far more reliable commentary on the poem itself.

I am a huge fan of Paradise Lost itself, but I want to confine this review to the Kindle edition of the Dover Thrift Editions. The Kindle edition has the text of the poem with straightforward formatting. Line breaks were consistent with what you would expect from print edition. There are no line numbers, but I have yet to see a kindle book with line number in poetry. My biggest complaint is that the footnotes, of which there are many, are not linked into the text, making them practically useless in the Kindle edition. It is difficult to switch back and forth between two locations without links, especially when you are not sure what part of the text will have a footnote. So, 5 stars for Paradise Lost, but just 3 stars for the Kindle edition. I would try and find one with linked footnotes.

This is by far the most complete Kidney diet book I have found and I have purchased a lot of books on the subject. It has the dietary exchanges for a diabetic diet as well as showing you what you can and can not eat with kidney disease. It lists the foods to avoid as well as ones you should have limited exposure to and explains the phases of kidney disease and how to slow down or help to reverse kidney disease. It has brought my husband from stage 5 kidney disease to stage 2. He is still healing but without this guide we would have had the wrong diet and done more damage. His kidney Dr. has been astonished at how quickly he has improved.

YES. A REAL doctor who actually explains WHY certain foods MUST be avoided by people with kidney disease, and explains the stages of the illness. Gives GOOD suggestions for eating foods which will NOT kill you. Kidney disease patients MUST eat low calcium, low potassium, low phosphorous foods. The ONLY book on renal dieting which I would recommend. The rest of the books seem to be written by charlatans or sadists. THIS book offers up websites for REAL information as well as explains WHY some foods can kill you, while others are OK. People with CKD must avoid so Many Foods, that a book with foods which they can eat and menus which won't kill them is ESSENTIL+AL. The BEST book on the subject to date! ONLY good foods for people with CKD are included in suggested menus.

I recently purchased Dr. Kang's book. A must have book for anyone with Kidney Disease. It is easily understood and has easy to make recipes for all meals. This book educates you on eating the right food so this disease does not iprogress any further. It is important to be aware of foods that should be avoided Dr. Kang thourgly covers every aspect a lay person needs to know about this diease.

I took this book out at the library first and liked it so much I had to buy it. This book has everything I needed to know about preserving my kidneys. The recipes are good too. Highly recommend this book if you are diabetic and trying to preserve your kidneys.

Very informative & simply written for complete understanding. Recipes in back look like they'd be pretty good for whole families. This is a good book to help people understand how to eat for kidney/ heart/ & overall good health before anything becomes an issue. Emphasizes real food instead of prepackaged processed foods, the overlap between heart healthy & kidney friendly diets, & the things to look for on blood test results & what it means & why. Explains what you should know to be an informed patient or better yet: to prevent becoming a patient! Takes the mystery out of CKD & gives good guidance for meals.

A good deal of useful knowledge and information concerning the nutritional content of foods and their effects on the kidneys. This together with info about the way the kidneys function and healthy dose of common sense yields a book that helps the reader gain an understanding that is balanced and rational. A good place to start for those who are new to the problem.

AM SUFFERING FROM KIDNEY PROBLEMS, CHANGED MY DIETS WITH THE HELP OF THIS EXCELLENT BOOK.
