Review

"The Scriptures, Old and New Testaments, have been the most thoroughly studied literary documents in the history of civilization. And sometimes the interpreters are almost as interesting as the texts they are reading. All who take the interpretation of the Bible seriously in our day will welcome this volume. After six historical essays, this volume introduces readers to more than two hundred of the most significant biblical interpreters, from the patristic period to modern times. By discussing each interpreter under four headings (context, life and work, interpretive principles, significance) and then concluding with a bibliography of the person's most significant writings, modern interpreters are invited into the studies and the lives of their predecessors. This is far and away the finest introduction to the colorful characters that have determined how scholars and laypeople have read the Bible for the past two thousand years. Bravo, InterVarsity Press!" (Daniel I. Block, Gunther H. Knoedler Professor of Old Testament, and Ph.D. Program Coordinator, Biblical Studies, Wheaton College Graduate School)"This is an instructive, thought-provoking, generous-minded, reliable, absorbing, illuminating and imaginative work, often elegant, entertaining, incisive and provocative. It covers a remarkable galaxy of names, and it is written by people from a wide range of backgrounds, many of them world experts on their subject. Why did no one think of writing it before?" (John Goldingay, David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament, Fuller Theological Seminary)"I plan to make this volume a mainstay in my History of Interpretation course, where I previously assigned its predecessor, Historical Handbook of Major Biblical Interpreters. This new compendium has a larger number and wider range of articles. Older articles have been updated. In addition, Wirkungsgeschichte ("history of interpretation") is rapidly becoming more central to exegesis than it has been for generations. A biographical approach to the subject is effective for scholar and student alike, because it highlights the human and the historical, and that relates to our own existence and interests. I love this subject. Maybe that's why I love this book." (Robert W. Yarbrough, associate professor and New Testament department chair, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School)"An impressive stable of international scholars, under the direction of veteran editor Donald McKim, have contributed to making this revised and enlarged edition of the Historical Handbook of Major Biblical Interpreters more comprehensive and user-friendly than the first edition. The new DMBI has now become even more indispensable for its contextualization of the work of biblical scholars from Abelard to Zwingli and for its provided six overviews of the major segments of the history of biblical interpretation. This useful handbook will prove to be a valuable resource for all theological disciplines and belongs on the shelf of every serious student of theology." (David E. Aune, Professor of New Testament, University of Notre Dame)"With its revisions and expansion, this useful handbook has now become a major, if not indispensable, resource for biblical interpretation. Those of us who own the original will need to replace it with this much more comprehensive volume. In a time when biblical scholarship is once again turning to history and theology, this dictionary will help us know where to go and what to look for. In its pages one can see both the trees and the forest with clarity." (Patrick D. Miller, Charles T. Haley Professor of Old Testament Theology, Princeton Theological Seminary)"Anyone interested in the history of interpretation--which today should include all of us--will profit from and appreciate this substantive volume, whose articles, unlike those in so many handbooks and dictionaries, are consistently of high quality. This revised edition, with its many new entries, is an advance beyond its excellent predecessor, and the generous and updated bibliographies will be of great assistance to those wishing to pursue further research." (Dale C. Allison Jr., Errett M. Grable Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary)"This dictionary is an essential resource for the study of biblical interpretation throughout the ages. Written by world-class scholars, it is both trustworthy and accessible. The organization of each individual article into 'Context,' 'Life and Work,' 'Interpretive Principles,' 'Significance' and 'Bibliography' quickly orients the reader to each interpreter. Historical introductions will help readers track the broader hermeneutical developments throughout the history of biblical interpretation. In this present age of hermeneutical awareness, this is an indispensable volume, helping contemporary readers see the strengths and weaknesses of both past and present approaches to Scripture." (Mark J. Boda, Ph.D. (Cantab.), Professor, Faculty of Theology, McMaster University)"Ten years after the appearance of its well-received predecessor, the Dictionary of Major Biblical Interpreters joins the ranks of InterVarsity Press's flagship series of reference works. Here is an excellent selection of entries covering a greatly expanded sweep of influential commentators ancient and modern, Catholic and Protestant, 'conservative' and 'progressive,' often contextualized with illuminating biographical information. The well-documented, often substantive essays benefit from an impressive international team of authors, many of whom are themselves representative of the state of the art of contemporary biblical interpretation. Serious students of the story of biblical interpretation will do well to clear another four inches on their reference shelf for this latest InterVarsity Press dictionary." (Markus Bockmuehl, Professor of Biblical and Early Christian Studies, Keble College, University of Oxford)"This volume provides a thorough introduction to the major figures in the history of exegesis. It is a useful resource both as a work of reference and as a guide to further reading." (Anthony N. S. Lane, director of research and professor of historical theology, London School of Theology)"Reading through these evenhanded presentations of our predecessors in the work of biblical interpretation is both a humbling and at the same time energizing experience. By providing a judicious selection of leading interpreters throughout the history of the church, the DMBI has made me realize anew how much we owe to our predecessors, while their faithfulness, often in the face of considerable adversity, is an inspiring example which will drive me back to the text of Scripture with renewed vigor and determination." (H. G. M. Williamson, Regius Professor of Hebrew, University of Oxford)

I have the first edition of this book, that is, Historical Handbooks of Major Biblical Interpreters, which I loved and happily relied on. But I am not sure whether I can say this is a development. It has just some expansion with articles and adding bibliographies "a little." While other reviewers reveals their dissatisfaction on the modern part, I cannot find any change in the essays of the Ancient, Medieval, and Early Modern parts. More serious issue is the kindle edition, which has no function of searching! How could I use a dictionary in e-book form without searching or indexing? I will refund it soon.

When tracing the history of biblical interpretation, personalities invariably matter. The articles on those writers that have contributed well or ill to our understanding of the biblical text in history are long enough to understand how their conclusions fit into the questions they were confronted with. Often we discount a writer because his views seem out of place in our thought world, but often when seen in their own historical context they make sense and have made significant contributions to the current discussion. One can read through several writers in an era or go to one that is pertinent to some other current reading. A great reference work. Apparently this edition is a significant expansion of the earlier edition - spend a bit more to get the richer resource.

Excellent resource. Concise summaries of Biblical Interpreters from the church fathers to modernity. Very informative and interesting.

Weighing in a nearly 1200 pages, the "Dictionary of Major Biblical Interpreters" by IVP is a vast gold-mine for Christian thinking, and panoramic in scope, allowing lay-persons, pastors and scholars alike to draw from the various sectors of biblical interpretation spanning from the Church Fathers to present-day theologians. While there is much to love about the dictionary, most helpful is how each bible interpreter's entry is formatted (mostly) in the same fashion, with basic "Life/Backgrounds" giving way to "Works/Themes", and followed by "Significance". Each entry ends with a helpful "Bibliography" which contains the primary works of a theologian, followed by significant studies done over their thought and influence. Some biblical interpreters are given more space given their historical impact and reception (Luther, Calvin, Schleiermacher, Aquinas, Barth, etc.), but even so, it doesn't feel disproportional. Even lesser-known (though still influential) interpreters, such as C.K. Barrett, Hugh of St. Victor, Norman Perrin, Ceslas Spicq, etc. are given ample space. The reader leaves each entry with (at least) a cursory knowledge of the thinker, but can pursue them further if desired. As a side note, the quality of the hardback/binding is outstanding. With such large books, the weight alone can tend to break a book down through continuous handling, but in my 10+ years of owning the book, and through many moves and shelf rearrangements, the book is still in excellent condition. The "Dictionary of Major Biblical Interpreters" is a must have for pastors, scholars, lay-persons and any/all arm-chair theologians!

At nearly 1,000 pages, With 230 in-depth articles about the principal players in the history of Biblical interpretation, this volume will serve as an invaluable tool for any serious student of the Bible or history of exegesis. From Abelard to Zwingli, this book has you covered. Come learn about the principal players in the history of Biblical interpretation. This book covers their historical and intellectual contexts, their primary works, their interpretive principles and their broader historical significance. In addition, there are 6 major essays offer an overview of the history of biblical interpretation from the second century to the present. This one-volume reference book was edited by Don McKim so you know it is reliable, concise readable and useful. This book will do well for any serious student of the Bible and the history of biblical interpretation. Did I mention that Don McKim edited this revised and expanded edition of major Biblical Interpreters so you know it's good. You really should discover for yourself that Biblical Interpretation has a long and storied history.

This book is unreadable in the Kindle version. The pages are formatted as whole-page images, and the text is too small to read on the Kindle device, phone, and barely readable on a tablet. This was an expensive mistake.

I think it's important for people to know who the intended audience is for this book.I'm not familiar with Ms. Haines' other books, but from browsing them here on Amazon I'd say they are probably for those who already know something about painting in watercolor. Whether they're intended for beginners or not I don't know, but I personally wouldn't even bother buying one, because they all look too advanced and intimidating to me.However, I bought this book of hers because I have never in my entire life picked up a paintbrush and attempted to paint anything. But I've always enjoyed the look of watercolor paintings and wished I knew where to start. If you fall into that category, this may well be the book for you.Ms. Haines takes a gentle, no-fear approach approach to watercolor painting that is very refreshing. She says - and I happen to agree - that adults who want to paint are too preoccupied with results, with producing something worthy of framing, so when their efforts fall short, they want to give up. Worse, they don't enjoy themselves, so they stop before they've even started. Ms. Haines, on the other hand, has put forth the idea that just playing around with color on paper is its *own* result, and that whatever actually happens on the paper is secondary to your personal enjoyment. Now, lots of art books I've read preach about "painting from the heart" and "not worrying about results," which is all well and good, but then they don't give you any place to start. Instead they showcase advanced work beginners could never dream of replicating, and they hawk a bunch of expensive supplies that you "need" to be an artist.Ms. Haines doesn't do that. All you need to do the projects in this book are a few tubes of paint, two brushes, paper, and water. That's it. What's more, she shows you through very basic, non-threatening demos how much fun it can be simply to move a brush loaded with pigment across a white page, and that doing so can calm you, be enjoyable, and also be secondary to the finished piece, as mentioned. She shows you how to paint basic abstract landscapes and flowers, which may not be everyone's proverbial cup-of-tea, but just so happens to be exactly what I wanted. And that's it. That's the book. It's true, she does talk about getting into the right frame of mind to paint, about how certain colors can affect mood, but the main thread running through the entire book is this: *anyone* can enjoy painting. I can't stress enough how refreshing it is to read a book that encourages you primarily to enjoy the *process,* something I've always believed in but never knew how to do until this book came along. However, if you already know how to paint - if you're experienced enough that you have the basics down and are looking for more advanced instruction - then you won't find anything new here. She does mention that advanced artists can gain benefit from this book by using it to remember how much fun it is simply to play, and I think there is some merit in that claim. But it does appear that this book is unlike her others, in that it's primarily aimed at those who want to paint but who are scared to try, and especially those who have never painted before. Again, if you fall into those categories, then you couldn't ask for a better start than what's offered here in Paint Yourself Calm. One other thing: the exercises in this book will only work with watercolors. But even if your ultimate goal is to paint in oils or acrylics, this is a good book to have on your shelf because it just might teach you to enjoy painting *first.* Then, if you want something more result-oriented, there are a ton of other books out there that can do that. But learning to enjoy yourself may be the biggest hurdle you need to overcome to one day learning how to paint like a pro, and if that's you, then I think you've come to the right book.

This is exactly the book I needed right now. The exercises are easy and give me the freedom to "play" instead of "produce". I plan to explore more of Jean Haines' books.

If you like the look of loose watercolor paintings but find it hard to loosen up or fearful to even start painting Jean Haines is for you. If you are in need of finding a way to meditate but cannot just "sit" this is also the book. "Paint Yourself Calm" looks in many ways like her other books--full of juicy flowing colors. But rather than an instructional book it is more about how to interact with the act of painting. She does give some basic exercises but they are designed to get you into the act of experimenting and simple enjoyment rather than creating a finished product. In some ways it acts as a self help book. I am not a professional painter. In fact I just started. But I keep at it because it does help me use a very different part of the brain and let go of my stressful world for awhile. Jean gives workplace professional people like me "permission" to just play with watercolor and let go of performance. Following her direction and thinking (I found I actually needed to sit and read awhile to get the full benefit of the book) one is able to let go of the fear of the blank page and get into a relaxing world for awhile--kind of a contemplative place for those of us that don't know how to sit still for long. And in doing it I find I am quickly developing my own style and actually painting better--stressing less over painting and in my life in general.

This book is amazing! I am about half the way through it, and I am in love! Her approach to painting is so relaxing, which is really the point of a hobby, isn't it? To relax and have fun? I don't think I'm anywhere close to producing any art which is saleable (although others disagree with me on that), but I am really okay with that. I want to learn to paint in my own time, and her approach is ideal for that.

A simply lovely, fresh attitude adjustment for someone recovering from foot surgery. I am an award-winning watercolorist, largely self-trained. But the doldroms have set in midway through this long period of inabilities - I am so glad I stumbled across this book online. It has refreshed my belief that making art, especially watercolor, is nourishing for the soul. Everyone should give it a try, just because it will make your heart sing in the doing, regardless of the whether the result is note-worthy. Thank you, Jean Haines, for reminding me to just relax, splash and throw on paint ... I especially needed it now.

It is a excellent book on using watercolor in a meditative way. A good way to stop the frantic pace of today's life and be present in the moment, enjoying color. If you are looking for watercolor instruction for painting pictures, Jean Haines' book The World of Watercolor is wonderful.

This is a wonderful book. For many years I have tried to paint with watercolors without much success. Now, with this book I have found I love working with this medium without pressure to paint something to hang on the wall.

I have not yet "dug in" to painting with the guidance of this book, but just skimming through the pages I'm so excited I purchased it. "Inspired" doesn't capture the emotion looking at the incredible pages of watercolors. I find myself reflecting on the joy of painting I had when in 6th grade. I would buy this book again, if only to look at the colors, form, and beauty of the art work.

From the Inside Flap

Stephen Mitchell is widely known for his ability to make ancient masterpieces thrillingly new, to step in where many have tried before and create versions that are definitive for our time. His celebrated version of the Tao Te Ching is the most popular edition in print, and his translations of Jesus, Rilke, Genesis, and Job have won the hearts of readers and critics alike. Stephen Mitchell now brings to the Bhagavad Gita his gift for breathing new life into sacred texts. The Bhagavad Gita is universally acknowledged as one of the world's literary and spiritual masterpieces. It is the core text of the Hindu tradition and has been treasured by American writers from Emerson and Thoreau to T. S. Eliot, who called it the greatest philosophical poem after the Divine Comedy. There have been more than two hundred English translations of the Gita, including many competent literal versions, but not one of them is a superlative literary text in its own right. Now all that has changed. Stephen Mitchell's Bhagavad Gita sings with the clarity, the vigor, and the intensity of the original Sanskrit. It will, as William Arrowsmith said of Mitchell's translation of The Sonnets to Orpheus, "instantly make every other rendering obsolete."From the Hardcover edition.

Maharishi's translation and commentary is my standard for Gita translations, but he covered only the first six chapters, and I have thirsted for what he could have done for the remainder twelve chapters. I have searched and searched to find a translation and commentary for the rest of this scripture that approaches Maharishi's. For me, Mitchell comes closest. Mitchell's is not really a verse by verse translation. He translates only verses that convey what he considers to be the essential themes of each chapter. But he has satisfied my need for knowledge of especially the chapters that Maharishi never covered. Overall I have found Stephen Mitchell to be especially gifted at this sort of work. I grew up in the Church, but Mitchell's cover of the Gospel of Jesus clarified the essential message of Jesus for me, far more than the eons of hours I spent in Sunday School and church. Stephen Mitchel is very, very, brilliant regarding Spiritual texts.

I picked this up after a review mentioned it was an easy read - and after trying other books where the gurus spend half if it getting you to understand why their guru is the best thing since Krishna, this book was a delight. I actually finished the dang story, and did so reading it out loud between my gal and I. Sure, it's not a book you'd pick up to study every verse and practice your sanskrit - all the same, the brief intro and story are enough to understand Krishna.

The Bhagavad Gita is a 700-verse scripture that is part of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It is written in the form of a dialogue between Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide Lord Krishna. The book's underlying message is selfless service and emphasis on duty over individual concerns. While I was very happy to read this influential text I was a little disappointed at Mitchell's version. He has some notes at the back of the book that make for interesting reading but it ultimately betrays him as a scholar but not a man of faith. I was hoping for more of the mystical flavor of this book that has inspired so many believers and non-believers alike but Mitchell dismisses some of the ideas in the book and dampens the original flavor of the text. After reading it I was left scratching my head at the book that Aldous Huxley, Carl Jung and many other writers described as important and inspirational. For example, he describes the Gita as "repetitive" at times. While the scholarship is fairly good I would be interested in reviewing a translation by someone who is a little closer and more respectful to the spiritual message of the text. This is not a direct translation of the source text and Mitchell himself describes his knowledge of Sanskrit as "rudimentary." That doesn't inspire much confidence in the reader and I wonder how much of the original message is intact as opposed to Mitchell's personal interpretation.

I love Stephen Mitchell's Tao Te Ching, but this is not on the same level ... other translations of the Bhagavad Gita are more touching to me, however, it may be good for a beginner

I cannot attest to it's accuracy, I am no scholar and this is my first reading of the Gita. I have seen in Mitchell's translation of tao te ching, that he does use quite a bit of freedom to achieve voice, rhythm and poetry over word for word accuracy. But sometime adjusting the text to capture the voice and mind behind the words makes for a better presentation of the original authors words in a new language. Mitchell does an especially great job at giving poetic timing and verse to the words, which is important for a work like Gita, as the original was written in a particular timing that obviously would be lost in the translation of words. That being said, the Gita; the dialogue between Krishna and Arjun stands on it's own as a tremendous epic full of great wisdom that is applicable to all of us. Mitchell's version is a beautiful, smooth, and poetic read!

Amazing book. I was intimidated by the language in the original Bhagavad Gita, but always wanted to read it. This translation was in simple english and managed to get the beautiful message across. Thank you to Stephen Mitchell!

The layout and separation of holy scripture from commentary is exactly the way all copies should be. I've seen and read about 4-5 different versions. This is the most sacred (in my view) and the most nicely edited one I've encountered.

Stephen Mitchell once again does a beautiful job translating ancient texts. some say he is not as "academically" accurate, but nevertheless, he gets to the deeper meaning of the work while maintaining the the poetic flow. I have tried without much success to understand other translations but gave up. Until I saw this one which he re-casts in terms that the modern western mind can comprehend. We will be reviewing it next week in our "spiritual" reading book club. Looking forward to other translations from same author. Also like his wife's books, like Loving What Is, by Byron Katie MItchell.

Me encantó, simplemente bueno. Espero poder leer lo más nuevo de Gaiman en los próximos días. Sin duda, uno d los mejores de nuestro tiempo.
